Like many GenXer’s, I grew up watching the Cosby Show. I loved it. I must say that I enjoyed Malcolm-Jamal Warner on The Resident as well, his character always brought flair & much needed class. Rest in Power, Malcolm-Jamal Warner 🕯️

Come closer, baby— let me tell you ’bout a man who walked like thunder and prayed like roots growing under fire.
His name was John. But folks call him something else now— Troublemaker. Marcher. Saint in sneakers.
He sat where they said, “No Coloreds.” Stood where they said, “Back down.” Bled where they said, “Behave.” And still—he smiled.
Now don’t get it twisted: Good trouble ain’t clean. It’ll break your heart open and demand you use both hands.
And yet—he said: “Get in the way.” So we did. And still do.
Though—he said: “Do not get lost in a sea of despair.” So we built boats out of poems, paddles from protest signs, and rowed toward better days.
And honey—he said: “When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just—you have a moral obligation to do something.”
So we showed up: hearts open, voices strong. Rural, loud, unbought.
Because he said: “Never, ever be afraid to make some noise.” So here’s our noise— our song, our stubborn kind of hope.
We learned: To make trouble with tenderness. To vote like our names were prayers. To link arms and stay in line— even when the bridge ahead is burning.
So now, baby— when they ask who taught you to fight like that, to sing while marching, to raise your voice in a whispering town—
Tell them: “I had a teacher. His name was Lewis.” Cecelia English 🦋, July 2025
This Week Was Devastating. Here’s Why We Can’t Look Away.

This week, Congress passed what I can only call the Big Bastard Bill—one of the largest upward transfers of wealth in modern history.
It rips away food assistance, housing support, health care, and basic human dignity from millions of people—while shoveling even more money and power into the hands of billionaires and federal agencies like ICE.

Around 100,000 march in Budapest Pride event in defiance of Hungary’s ban : NPR The march, described as the largest LGBTQ+ Pride event in Hungary’s history, took place in defiance of a ban implemented by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government. Organizers called it a rebuke of the government’s stance against LGBTQ+ rights.
The government had enacted a law making it an offense to hold or attend events that “depict or promote” homosexuality to minors. Police rejected requests to register the Pride march. However, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony declared it would be held as a municipal event, which he argued didn’t require police approval. Despite government warnings of potential fines and even prison time, the event proceeded with a large turnout, including European Parliament members and other officials

Senator Tom Tillis isn’t running for reelection—because he couldn’t face the people he betrayed. Josh Hawley? He stood tall and lied, right alongside the rest of the GOP.
Remember who they are.
Senator Murkowski voted yes. She struck a backroom deal to shield her state—while leaving millions of Americans to suffer, starve, and die.
Remember who they are.
Kamala Harris once broke a tie—for the needy. J.D. Vance just broke a tie—for the greedy.
One cast a vote for care. The other, for cruelty.
They knew what this bill would do. They passed it anyway.
“You cannot be afraid to speak up and speak out for what you believe. You have to have courage, raw courage.”-J.L.
So let’s speak. Let’s organize. Let’s make them remember.
Because this moment demands courage—and good trouble.
Justice Dept. Explores Using Criminal Charges Against Election Officials – The New York Times – Administration Directives: Senior officials have instructed Justice Department lawyers to investigate how a failure by state or local officials to meet security standards for electronic voting systems could be considered a crime. Emphasis on Election Security: This effort is reportedly driven by the Trump administration’s assertions, without strong evidence, that American elections are vulnerable to fraud and manipulation. Concerns about Mismanagement: The discussions explore the possibility of charging officials with criminally negligent mismanagement of election systems. Surprise within the DOJ: Some prosecutors within the Justice Department have expressed surprise at this direction, finding it to be a novel and potentially aggressive approach. DOJ Response: A Justice Department spokesman stated that the agency is exploring all options to promote “free, fair and secure elections”. Impact on Election Officials: This potential action could significantly increase the stakes for state and local election officials, bringing the Justice Department and the possibility of criminal charges into the election process.

This week was marked by violence and assassination—and now ends with our so-called leader launching a war without constitutional authority.
We are watching lines break, one after another.
It feels like the Summer of Fire has begun.
But fire also clears the ground for new growth. And we are not powerless.
In every county, in every community, people are waking up, linking arms, and refusing to go quietly.
So yes—it’s dark. But we’ve lit torches before. And we’ll do it again.

U.S. Strikes Iran: President Trump announced that the U.S. military struck three sites in Iran, directly joining Israel’s campaign against the country’s nuclear program. This operation, dubbed “Operation Midnight Hammer,” involved B-2 Spirit bombers and precision-guided weapons and caused severe damage to Iran’s largest nuclear sites, according to the administration. In response, Iran has warned of “everlasting consequences” and threatened retaliation, while some lawmakers in both parties question the legality of Trump’s actions.
Continued Violence in the Middle East: Amidst the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, violence in Gaza continues, with dozens of Palestinians, including children, killed in Israeli attacks as they sought aid. The UN has condemned Israel’s actions against children in Gaza and the West Bank, and malnutrition among children in Gaza is rising at an alarming rate. There are also reports of continued missile exchanges between Israel and Iran after the US strikes.
Supreme Court Ruling on Gender-Affirming Care: The Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth, a ruling that could impact similar bans in other states. Critics argue the ruling discriminates on the basis of sex and abandons transgender children to political whims.
New Restrictions on ICE Jail Inspections: The Department of Homeland Security implemented new rules limiting lawmakers’ ability to inspect immigration jails, requiring 72-hour notice and giving ICE discretion to deny or cancel visits. This comes amidst reports of lawmakers being blocked from visiting facilities and concerns about the detention of immigrants arrested at court hearings.

Dodgers clash with [47 Regime] over ICE presence at stadium – In summary: The Dodgers asserted they denied ICE entry to their stadium, while the Trump administration (ICE and DHS) denied being present for an operation related to the Dodgers. Let that sink in: not a jail, not a detention center—a basement. In America. In 2025. This is how fascism creeps in: through administrative “exceptions” that become standard operating procedure.
🗣️ Quote of the Week
“You cannot out-organize authoritarianism unless you’re willing to name it—and confront it.”
— Olivia Julianna, activist, strategist, and Gen Z firebrand
🏛️ Congressmember of the Week
🧌 Villain: Rep. Mary Miller (IL-15)
While families in rural Illinois face real economic pain from tariffs and Medicaid cuts, Mary Miller continues to push culture war nonsense and openly praise authoritarian policies. From voting against veterans’ benefits to parroting Trumpist fear tactics, she’s not showing up for her district—she’s showing off for MAGA.
Locally, you can support Josh Collins & his bid for district #102 — neither Mary Miller nor Adam Neimerg bothered to show up to the Town Hall in Paris last Friday. The congresswoman was even nearby at a wedding & could easily have stopped in to speak with her constituents.

Hi everyone — just a quick update on my daughter, Roegn. I know I haven’t shared much lately about what she’s been up to… mostly because, honestly, it’s been pretty uneventful. She’s been in a bit of a rut, not quite sure what direction she wanted to take — and that’s totally okay. She’s young, and figuring things out takes time.
But last night, she had one of those classic, country young-adult experiences… I have to take her to the ER now to get her checked out. Fairly certain she has a concussion, I’ll update y’all later.
The Explanation.
She didn’t even realize it had happened.
She lost the shell off the back of Zeus — in the middle of a damn field. And if that isn’t the most Southeastern Illinois thing I’ve said all day, I’ll eat my boots.
Roegn came in this morning, covered in mud, proudly telling me she’d recovered the back of the truck and everything was fine. Then she looked me dead in the eye and said, “Remember you’re my mom… and that you love me.” (BAHAHA!)
I told her I was so damn proud I could hardly stand it.
I hugged her about ten times and made sure she knew how amazing it was that she handled it — ALL BY HERSELF.
🏳️🌈Corporate Sponsors Like Pepsi, Nissan, Mastercard, and More Pull Back From NYC Pride Several major corporations including Pepsi, Nissan, Mastercard, & Citi are reducing or withdrawing sponsorship from NYC Pride events in 2025, particularly the Pride March scheduled for June 29 in New York City. The decline in corporate Pride sponsorship suggests that political pressures rather than consumer sentiment are driving companies to scale back involvement despite ongoing public support and growing influence of diverse consumer groups.
UN Chief Says Gaza War in ‘Cruelest Phase’ as Aid Trucks Looted UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutierrez said on May 23, 2025, that the Gaza war has reached its cruelest phase with aid trucks looted despite Israel easing its 11-week blockade. Welcome to another edition of Political—Yes, I Said It! where I give you a quick (ha!) rundown of the week’s top stories. Of course, with so much happening these days, it’s really important to find a daily newsletter or podcast that keeps you informed without driving you crazy.
Personally, I recommend The Daily Beans and What A Day. Both offer weekday news roundups, safe and inclusive communities, and thoughtful commentary. Plus, The Daily Beans always ends with a little Good News and a call for Good Trouble—and who doesn’t need more of that?
I want to start by addressing a false report from the Krassensteins on BlueSky claiming that China pulled out of the trade talks in Geneva. In an age where we’re already battling waves of misinformation, we don’t need it coming from sources people consider trustworthy.
Always verify before you amplify.
I made this mistake! I put this out on BlueSky & I cannot delete it, so I’ve reported it & refrained from commenting so they didn’t get my engagement!
