The build up to Christmas is amazing, one of my favourite times of the year. I like to spread the cost and start buying bits and stashing them early. So I’m happy to see ‘Christmas’ in the shops from September. It’s uplifting to see Father Christmas peeking from shelves, robins on everything, pretty mugs and napkins.
I like to choose a new decoration every year and I definitely have a thing for a snow globe!
But when it’s eventually done, it’s done. I don’t want Christmas to hang around like a bad smell, I’d pack it all up on the 27th if I had a chance. As the sun goes down on Boxing Day, I’m over it.
The family like to have the tree and decorations around a little longer. Yesterday I’d had enough, as soon as I got back from the groomers with the liability retriever, and the groceries from the shop I did while he was being pampered were put away, it was all coming down!
Last year, the kids took down the decs. Things were not packed away quite how I like, It left me with an unsettled feeling all year and a dread at opening the boxes this year.
I’m not house proud or fussy but I do like the decorations to sit in the loft for 11 months in an orderly fashion.
It took me four hours to sort out the boxes, wipe the insides (where does that sticky come from?) take down the decorations and put them away to my satisfaction…. Four hours well spent!
Now I can happily move into 2026 as 2025 has been put to bed!
Yesterday, my mum sent me a screen shot of the quote above and I thought, yes, maybe I should try to fill blank pages again.
In the context of the quote, I’m sure Brad didn’t mean it so literally. In the context of me, I do long to fill blank pages and write but without muse it seems I am nothing.
This blog faltered when my gorgeous children of 8 and 6 told me they no longer wished to be on the internet (school had been informing them of their rights and I couldn’t in all consciousness disagree) they were at that time, the centre of my universe. I tried a few times to keep writing here and just floundered. Mainly I think as I had so little else to talk about.
At 19 and 17, they still are a prominent part of my life of course. Both still at home and coming to the end of their “school career” the challenges are different, the ultimate responsibility for their choices is not mine. I’m guiding, assisting, enabling and swearing when they don’t do their chores!
This life of mine, though, has changed so much, I have other prominent parts that are demanding and sometimes all consuming. It often feels like I live in many different boxes.
Where I was a full time mum, I’m now a full time P.A, a job that some might argue, is not dissimilar to wrangling toddlers.
Where I was the mother of his children, the hubster and I are trying to find our path as a couple once more. With their independence, should come ours. (And free pet sitting).
It’s 20 years since we discovered we were pregnant. We had been together 9 years, so a firm foundation? We were different people back then. Who are we now?
I’d like to ramble on a bit occasionally, I miss writing, I’ve had other blogs, so when I saw mum’s screenshot of the quote, my first thought was “start another blog!”
Slowly, the thought occurred, that no, I should not start another blog, if I’ve got anything to say, it can go here. I don’t need to start afresh, rather just carry on (or crash and burn like every other time I’ve tried 🤣)
so, yes mum, 365 blank days stretch out in front of us.
Each day will be filled and maybe some will be remarked on!
Casper and I took a wander in the forest today, he’s such a mud magnet.
There is a clearing halfway down one of the less used tracks, under a cluster of monkey puzzle trees.
It looks like a coven of witches have segregated the ground for worship and dancing, the whole clearing has a mystical, eerie feel to it. But it is also peaceful and beautiful.
What I suspect the area has actually been used for, is a forest school.
After shopping Monday I assessed the previous weeks left over veggies and found I had a bag of rather sweaty parsnips loitering in the back of the fridge. I do love a Parsnip soup. So this is what I did with them – my personal recipes are a bit hit and miss on amounts so sorry if its a big vague for those of you that follow instructions to the max, cooking is a creative activity in my house, usually just creating a mess!
Spicy Parsnip Soup
1 portion
5 or 6 Parsnip (mine were medium sized young ones) 2 carrots 1 onion Oil for roasting ½ stock cube (of your choice, I used a Kallo Vegetable low salt) Cumin ) Coriander ) or spices to your taste Ginger ) Ground pepper Water to your desired consistency
Method
Top, Tail and Peel Vegetables, remove all squishy bits. Cut into chunks and lightly oil, roast in a roasting tray at 200 degrees C until starting to soften and brown. Heat about ¼ pint of water in a thick bottomed pan and dissolve stock cube, add spices to taste and a little pepper. Put roasted veggies in the water and add boiling water until they are covered. Allow to simmer for 10 minutes then blend with a hand blender, adding water until you are happy with the consistency. Allow to warm through until bubbling whilst stirring. Serve and enjoy.
I do find stock cubes are over salty, even the kallo low salt are to salty for me, this is personal choice however so adjust the amount of stock cube to your taste too.
