The Question of the Poem-The Lake Isle of Innisfree

April 30, 2007

1. What is the theme of the poem and why did Frankie chose the poem to read? What is the significance of the poem to Frankie and Maggie?

After the fight with blue bear, Maggie could not move anymore. She felt sad and dessapointed.
Frankie chose the poem to Maggie is that he wanted to take Maggie to a place, where has no sufferings and that they can live withought any cares.

2. Do you notice any transformation or change of the relationship between Frankie and Maggie? What is it? And what contribute to the change?

At the beginning of the film, Frankie did not like Maggie very much. They were coach and student at first. But later, they became good friends and even like the family.
The reason why did Frankie change so much toward Maggie is that he was affecting by Maggie’s efforts, I thought. But the other reason may be that he looked Maggie as his real daughter. That is because Frankie’s real daughter did not get very close with Frankie. That may be the other reasons to Frankie’s deeds.

1. What do you see in the picture? Where is Icarus? What are the other figures in the picture? Why does the painter try to convey through the arrangement of the figures in the painting?

There are people, sun, sea atc in the picture.

Icarus was fell into the deep ocean. We could only see one of his legs on the deep ocean.

I saw lots of people in this picture, but nobody cared about Icarus when he fell into the ocean.
People countined their works and nobody was willing to help poor Icarus.

I thought the printer wanted to tell us people’s selfishness. People care about only theirselves.
That is why when Icarus was fell into the ocean, no one helped him.

Mother Tongue

3. What is the family background of the author? How does she look at it? Does she feel proud of it or embarrassed about it?

Amy Tan lived in America and her mother came from Shanghai. So her mother’s English was very poor. But the author believed her mother’ English is vivid、clear、and with all her thoughts.

In my opinion, the simpliest language is the easiest to understand.
We do not have to use the hard words. The simple words can also express what we want to say. And the simple words are familar to all of us. That is, we can understand it easily.
The language is used to communicate. So , why do we have to use the hard words to talk?

5. Any inspirations you get from reading the story?

The language is used to talk to each other. We just have to get the meaning of what they are talking about and understand the meaning. That is the most important thing of the Language, doesn’t it? That is, the hard words are not so important to the Language.

The Sorrows of Young Werther

January 19, 2007

1.Werther says 「 That the life of man is but a dream is a thought which has occurred to many people、and I myself am constantly haunted by it」 at the beginning of the letter written on May 22. What is he trying to tell us、we people everywhere? Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.

I have had a dream since I was very young. To be a piano teacher was my dream since I started learning playing the piano. But when I was in junior high school, there were too many things I have to do every day. For example, having tests, doing lots of homework. I had to spend lots of my time doing these things. That is, I spended less time playing the piano.
That is why Werther said our dreams always limited by many causes. I totally agree with what he said!!!!!!!!

2.How does Werther think of children? Why does he think that the happiest people in the world are like chidren? [ Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.]

In my opinions, children are childlike and their behaves are nnocent. They do not have any evil thoughts in their minds. We were headless since we were very young ,right? But when we growed up, we are not as headless as when we were children.
That is why werther always thinks of children in this book.

3.What kind of person does Werther think he is? What are the characteristics of the young Werther you learn from the letter on May 22?

I think he is a person who is very thoughtful to everything arriund him.
He always observed things carefully and always be very sentimental to anything.
His heart might be very emotional and might get hurt easily.
Werther is also the kind of person which I was sometimes.

1. In Canto V of Inferno, those who are indulged in lust are sent to the second circle of hell, including Semiramis, Dido, Cleopatra, Helen, Achilles, Paris, Tristan, Francesca and Paolo. Choose ONE of the sinners lost in lust. Explain why Dante puts him/her into hell.

Paris, the prince of Troy, took the queen, Helen, away from Creek. Because of it, he caused the big war between the two cities. How stupid it was to cause such a terrible war because of a woman.

2. Why is Dante moved to tears after Francesca’s description of love and why does he finally fall “as a dead body falls” after her personal account of her intimate relationship with Paolo?

Because Francesca married Paolo’s brother, Caina, and it is not allowed to do so.
That is why no one considered them a lovely family. But in the end, Dante have a sympathy to the poor couple. That is why he felt so sorry to them.

3. From Dante’s presentation of Francesca and Paolo, we are encouraged to consider the place of moral responsibility in depictions of love, sex, and violence in our own day.
We can certainly discuss music, television, movies, and advertising (as well as literature) in these terms.
Who is more (or less) responsible and therefore accountable for unacceptable attitudes and behavior in society: the creators and vehicles of such messages or the consumers and audiences?

I think the creation is more reasponsible. Because they created new things and have a deep influence on our life. But there are also something they should avoid.
I think they should understand the value between right and wrong.
