And Pigs Followed Her Home

January 17, 2026

Cerise walked along the sidewalk on Bridgewater. She walked home from work instead of driving each day, leaving the car for her roommate. Of course, she usually brought more comfortable shoes in her bag for the walk but she had forgotten so she was walking home in heels. The street had very few people, mostly other people also going from home from work. She was shaken from her wandering thoughts by an odd clicking, tapping noise coming from behind her. The sound was clearly not heels. She turned around and saw that she was being followed by a large pig. The pig stopped walking when she stopped to turn around. The pig stared at her expectantly.

Cerise and the pig stared at each other for a moment before Cerise stomped a single foot in the pig’s direction and clapped her hands.

“Shoo!” she said. “Get away from me!”

Satisfied, she turned around and started walking toward home again. She listened and her heart fell when she heard the familiar tapping again. She turned around and the pig was still there. The pig gave her an almost defiant look. She glared at the pig and then sighed.

“Look, I’m not going to turn you back,” she said. “You know what you did.”

Some of the people on the street could obviously hear her. Even without the strange dialogue, the visual of a woman talking to a pig on an uptown street was enough to start drawing a crowd. Well, a crowd desperately trying not to look like a crowd. The pig looked around at the other people and then back at Cerise. She could have sworn on her life that the pig was smirking. She let out another frustrated sigh.

“Do you think I care what these people think?” she asked. “I’ve been the weird girl before. You’re not going to weaponize them against me.”

The pig stomped one of its hooves. A young woman pulled out their cell phone to start filming her while an older man started calling somebody. Cerise snapped her fingers and both phones started smoking. The two dropped their phones in surprise.

“Go find a restaurant dumpster and have fun,” she said to the pig. “Or walk to the zoo. I don’t care. You’re not my problem anymore.”

The pig stomped its hooves in frustration and snorted.

“You know what you did and I won’t be forgiving you,” she said in response. “Get lost, bacon boy.”

Cerise turned on her heel and walked with purpose toward her apartment. As she got inside the front door, her feet definitely hurt from the power walking. She walked to the elevator and slipped inside and hit the button. She leaned against the wall and took her heels off and put them in her bag. When the door opened on her floor, she walked to the apartment and she fished her keys out of that bag. She unlocked the door and then slipped inside, locking the door behind her before she relaxed and breathed easily once again.

“Honey, I’m home!” she called out.

Maddy peeked around the corner from where she was in the kitchen and rolled her eyes.

“That joke still isn’t funny,” Maddy said. “I hope you’re hungry. I’m cooking.”

Cerise walked into the kitchen barefoot.

“I can smell it,” Cerise said as she walked into the kitchen.

Maddy looked down at Cerise’s bare feet.

“You look grumpy,” Maddy asked. “Did you forget your flats again?”

“It wasn’t just the shoes,” Cerise said. “I caught that little shit Jacob following me home, trying to embarrass me in public.”

“So that you’ll turn him back,” Maddy said.

“But I won’t turn him back,” Cerise said. “He deserves what he got and more. If anything, I was being merciful.”

“I know,” Maddy said, putting a comforting hand gently on her roommate’s shoulder. “He should be behind bars.”

“The courts have such a bad record of locking up guys like him,” Cerise said. “And this way, Lynn doesn’t have to worry about him.”

“So he will remain a pig,” Maddy said. “A poetic punishment. A little on the nose.”

“He won’t be a pig forever,” Cerise said. “He’ll turn back after a few weeks.”

“You’re getting soft,” Maddy said with a teasing smile.

“I am not,” Cerise said with a wicked grin. “I have so many things planned if he doesn’t learn his lesson.”

Why I Love Pro-Wrestling: Psycho Mike

January 5, 2026

As I have mentioned before, it has been a little more difficult to be a professional wrestling fan lately, what with the corruption of the WWE, but I will always be a fan at heart. One of the alternatives that I have discovered is a delightful little organization called Mystery Wrestling. The company’s shows are promoted by Evil Uno (Nicolas Dansereau) who is currently a wrestler with All Elite Wrestling/Ring of Honor but has been around since 2002 (when he was 14 years old). He promotes in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, and broadcasts on Twitch.tv. One never knows what will happen on any given episode but the show primarily consists of comedy matches. I could talk about Mystery Wrestling in general but I want to focus on one man named Psycho Mike.

Psycho Mike (real name Mike Rollins) is a very strange man who wrestles in many independents such as Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling, Mystery Wrestling, Smash Wrestling, and others. Particularly in Mystery Wrestling, he is a fairly single-minded and stubborn guy. He tends to get fixated on something and will not give it up throughout the match. One of the first things that I noticed that Mike was obsessed with is the bodyslam. The bodyslam is a fairly standard move these days and is generally used as a transitional move to set up something else such as a top rope move. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, it was a much bigger deal. Just look at the Hogan/Andre and Yokozuna/Luger feuds in the WWF where the bodyslam was a featured move. Mike gets addicted to bodyslams, one time even using it nine times in a row and making his opponent give up rather than taking a tenth.

Another thing that Mike has been obsessed with is the hard cam. This is a fairly meta obsession as many pro-wrestlers play to the crowd and try not to obviously pay attention to the cameras too much. The hard cam is a tradition and common practice in professional wrestling tapings. The hard cam or hard camera is a fixed camera that is focused on the entirety of the wring from one side of the audience. The camera does not move or change focus and it is the main camera showing a match. Other cameras pick up additional angles but the hard cam is ever-present. Wrestlers are trained to always play to the hard cam so that viewers can see what they are doing at all times. Mike takes this to an extreme by staring at the hard cam as if he were a moth staring at a light bulb. He takes something that all wrestlers do to an extreme and makes it extremely obvious.

A lot of weird things happen to Mike, often in the middle of a match. One thing that happened in 2025 was that Psycho Mike had his blood test results delivered during a match from his doctor. Unfortunately, his doctor’s expert opinion was that Mike tested positive for being a piece of shit. This made being a heel a medical condition for Mike and doing evil things was now a biological imperative. This meant that he would now openly attack the genitals of his opponents with gusto. He would shrug and apologize but say that it was a medical condition and he could not help himself. He did these things reluctantly as if he wanted to play by the rules but was compelled to do otherwise. Recently, he was offered a cure to being a POS but he had to be awarded the cure by winning it in a match for it to be effective. He won the match but accidentally spilled the cure. His journey toward recovery continues and he will continue to cheat against his will in the meantime.

Another thing that I have noticed about Psycho Mike is that he has a strange connection to headgear. In one match, he got hold of a cowboy hat. As soon as he put it on, his obsession with bodyslams gave way to a new, temporary obsession with the lariat. A lariat is a variation on a clothesline where the one performing it runs at the target while doing it. The lariat was made famous by a lot of southern wrestlers, primarily in Texas. Stan Hansen brought the move to Japan, where it flourished, but it is still associated with “cowboy” characters. Likewise, in a recent match with Josh Alexander, Mike was exposed to wrestling headgear. Alexander wears traditional headgear used in so-called amateur wrestling and Olympic wrestling. In the match, Mike accidentally knocked it off of Alexander’s head. He put the headgear on his own head, and suddenly he could do all of Alexander’s moves, especially the German suplex. So it seems that Psycho Mike can absorb abilities from articles of clothing.

I am looking forward to searching out more of Psycho Mike’s work in the coming year. He is an incredibly entertaining performer and I cannot imagine that he will not be picked up by bigger companies in the future. Two of the companies he works with are fronted by people connected or formerly connected to large companies. If, for some reason, he does get picked up by these larger companies, I hope that he keeps appearing on YouTube and I would love to see him live if he comes close enough to Baltimore. He represents what is great in pro-wrestling and I want to see more of him and people like him.

After the Bout

December 6, 2025

Audra wiped the sweat from her eyes and looked over at Geoffrey. The cheers of the crowd were still ringing in her ears and it killed her that those cheers were not for her. She wiped gently at her forehead and she could feel the sting of the cut there.

“You barely won,” Audra said. “So I don’t want to hear any gloating from you.”

“I won’t gloat,” Geoffrey said. “I promise I won’t gloat. Your swordplay has improved greatly in the past few months. As you said, I barely won. I could feel that. I’m man enough to admit it.”

“Yeah well, just wait until next time,” Audra said. “I’ll beat you next time for sure.”

“You just might,” Geoffrey said. “I’m more concerned about your forehead. I slipped when we were locked in combat. I didn’t mean to cut you.”

Audra covered the cut defensively, a little embarrassed. “It’s just a scratch,” she said. “These things happen.”

“Still, I could help you tend to it,” Geoffrey said. “It’s the least that I can do.” He moved a little closer.

“I can take care of it myself as soon as I can find a mirror,” Audra said. “I’m fine. I’ll be fine.” She backed away from him and then turned away.

“Don’t be so stubborn,” Geoffrey said. “I’m capable of a light touch and experienced in dealing with cuts and bruises,”

“I’m certain that you are,” Audra said with a smirk as she looked over her shoulder. “You have been injured enough in battle.”

Geoffrey rolled his eyes. “Whatever you say,” he said. “If mocking me will make you accept my aid, I’ll gladly pay that price.”

“Fine,” Audra said and turned around and sat back on the bench. “Do your worst.”

“I’d rather do my best,” Geoffrey said. “Hold on.”

He looked around and found some soap, a cloth, and a bucket of water. He sat down in front of her and started to apply soap and water to her cut. He was as gentle as he could be but he was sure that it hurt. Audra did not make a sound or move much but he could see the tension in her jaw. Her eyes closed a few times.

“You know,” Geoffrey said. “You were the clear crowd favorite out there.”

“They were cheering for you,” Audra said immediately, almost cutting him off. “You are the champion several times over.”

Geoffrey found it hard to figure her out. Sometimes she was boasting of her superiority and other times she was quite humble and self-deprecating.

“They wanted you to beat me and you almost did,” Geoffrey said. “They will certainly remember you. Next time, they’ll cheer even harder for you.”

Audra turned away for a moment, hiding her momentary blush at his praise. Geoffrey grabbed her chin gently and turned her back so that he could begin applying the bandage. If he saw anything, he did not let on. He carefully smoothed the bandage and then backed away.

“There you go,” Geoffrey said. “All sorted. I hope it doesn’t leave a mark.”

“I doubt it,” Audra said. “You’re not as strong as you think you are.” She stuck her tongue out.

Geoffrey laughed at that. “I guess I should stop feeling guilty then,” he said. “If you’re feeling well enough to heap insults on me, you can’t be that injured.”

“Exactly,” Audra said. “Don’t even give it a second thought. I’m already thinking of the next fight.”

“I’m not there yet,” Geoffrey said. “I’m satisfied enough with how things went today. I’m not itching to tangle with you again.”

“Coward,” Audra said with a smile. “That’s why I’ll be champion next instead of you.”

“No doubt,” Geoffrey said with a smile.

Here Be Monsters

November 29, 2025

The carriage had rattled on through the fog during the night. They traveled mostly at night when they could which made for a peaceful if lonely travel experience. When the sun started to rise and the fog started to burn away, they were astonished to look out and see bodies. Dozens of dead bodies were lying on the ground. They looked like they had been in battle, as there were weapons on the ground next to the bodies and their armor was torn open in places. Phillip climbed down from the front of the carriage (he was always too big to ride inside anyway) while Hugo remained in the driver’s seat. Hugo was always ready.

Phillip lumbered across the battlefield, inspecting fallen soldiers as he went. He drew his great sword and poked one of the bodies for a moment. He was not expecting it to move and it did not disappoint him. You never did know. Phillip himself, or at least the parts of him, should have been dead but they were sewn up and he was walking the earth. He looked back at the carriage as the door popped open.

“Lady Narcisa,” he called out as he saw a slender pale leg extend into the light. “There is no need to bother yourself with this. I have this well and truly handled.”

Lady Narcisa Mironescu stepped into the light and showed obvious discomfort as direct sunlight hit her. She pulled her hood up and seemed to relax.

“There is no need to bother yourself, Sir Phillip,” Narcisa said. “I can exist in sunlight with only a little discomfort.”

“You go where you want to go, lady,” Phillip said. “I would never presume to dictate where you are and where you are not. Also, I am not a knight so the use of that title is not appropriate.”

“And my family disowned me due to my condition so I can hardly be called ‘lady,’” Narcisa said. “Parts of you once belonged to knights so I think their titles transfer to you. Besides that, you have a knight’s soul.”

Phillip sighed and decided to let her win the debate. “These men are dead, so there is nothing to be done for them now,” he said. “We have our own search to continue.”

“The world might call us monsters,” Narcisa said. “We prove them wrong by showing compassion and there may be a mystery to solve here. Something we can do to help.”

Phillip closed his eyes and hung his head. “You are right, of course,” he said. “I was being selfish.”

“I know how much you care for me and our search for the people who ‘made’ us can only help us going forward,” Narcisa said. “It is easy to get caught up in that desire.”

Phillip looked at one of the bodies and a thought occurred to him. He looked up to study Narcisa’s face for a moment. He saw her eyes fall upon the same fallen soldier. The soldier was covered in still-crimson blood. Narcisa’s eyes were locked on that red color.

“Speaking of desires,” Phillip said. “Are you alright. That is a lot of blood.”

Narcisa looked up at him as if waking from a sudden daydream. “I can maintain my composure,” she said. “I will not succumb to bloodlust. Not again.”

There was a long silence as the two of them continued to study the battlefield. Many things went unsaid but many of them did not need to be said. Phillip turned his attention fully back to the bodies. He looked at the wounds and the positions of the bodies more closely.

“You were right, Lady,” Phillip said. “This is in our particular area of expertise. This was no ordinary battle. This was a monster. A true monster. Something or someone tore open their armor instead of simply cutting through it. The violence went way over the level of efficiency needed to put down a target.”

“We should investigate further,” Narcisa said. “We can do good here. We’ll have Hugo take us to the closest town and inquire further.”

“You speak truth as always,” Phillip said.

Why I Love Pro-Wrestling: Scott Hall

November 24, 2025

As I have detailed here before, my first introduction to professional wrestling was the WWF in the early nineties. I would religiously watch Monday Night Raw and Smackdown. The only friend I had who watched wrestling only watched WWF as well. Because of this, I never really watched WCW television but I knew some of the broad strokes. Of course, I have stopped watching WWF/WWE entirely because of their toxic politics but I feel fine watching the past.  With the availability that streaming provides, I have the ability to catch up on what I missed. I have been watching WCW television for the past year or so and my eyes have been opened. I have changed my mind on the man known as Scott Hall. I think there was a fairly brief sweet spot for Scott’s career that was enjoyable.

In the WWF in the early to mid-nineties, a lot of the company was made up of cartoon characters. This was hit or miss as we had a lot of the worst gimmicks in pro-wrestling history during that period. Scott Hall portrayed the character of Razor Ramon who was a direct ripoff of Tony Montana from Scarface. There were a couple of problems with this but the two biggest for me were that A) the gimmick came off as racist as Scott Hall was born in my home state of Maryland and  B) it was a one note character. As I got older, the character rubbed me the wrong way more and more. When he and Kevin Nash left the WWF, I saw it as a good thing. It would possibly free up time for my favorites and allow space for newcomers. In fact, it eventually did.

When Scott Hall first showed up on WCW Nitro, it was without any fanfare or announcement. He jumped the guardrail out of the audience and interrupted the proceedings. He declared war on the company as if he was an outsider from the WWF. In fact, Outsider would be a big part of his gimmick going forward. He was soon joined by Kevin Nash and then Hulk Hogan as the New World Order, not just a heel faction within the company but an outside entity attempting a hostile takeover. Hall kept the phony Cuban accent for a little bit but thankfully dropped it and developed his new character a bit more. He embraced humor and tended to mock his opponents a lot. His bravado and sarcastic fear make it all the more satisfying when somebody actually gets to punch him in the face.

Throughout much of his early days in WCW, Scott Hall was never seen far from the side of his tag team partner and best friend, Kevin Nash. The two formed the tag team that would eventually be dubbed The Outsiders. The two were monsters in the ring and they were more often than not on top as tag champions. Their established dominance meant that several WCW tag teams were hunting them. They faced all of the best teams but the two that came closest to matching them were The Steiner Brothers (Scott and Rick Steiner). The four big  men came together in titanic tests of strength often. The Outsiders were great wrestlers but also often won by cheating. They sometimes made it through matches by the skin of their teeth. Their matches against Harlem Heat, The Faces of Fear, and others were also very good.

Vs. Disco Inferno

This was actually Scott’s third run in WCW. He had previously been in under the names Scott “Gator” Hall and The Diamond Studd in the eighties and early nineties. In this third run in the company, he was working on top from the beginning. However, he also often helped out the younger guys and midcard on television shows. Once in a while, Scott would have a match with somebody like Disco Inferno, Alex Wright, or Booker T among others. These guys were not known at the time as being world beaters or future champions but they did have potential and apparently Scott saw that. He would go into these matches with a little more comedy at first but would get serious as the match turned out not to be the easy night that he thought it would be. If these cruiserweights or midcarders beat him, he would play it off with anger and astonishment in a way that would preserve his mystique while not diminishing his opponent.

I had mentioned before that Scott Hall had a window of time where I liked his work. Maybe it was more accurate to say “windows”. Scott Hall was amazing when he showed up during the founding of the NWO and for the next year or so. However, anybody who knows much about pro-wrestling would probably know that Scott Hall had strong personal demons. The chief demon was alcoholism which plagued and diminished his career severely. He was absent from the company a lot because he was in rehab, suspended, or fired due to substance abuse. The company (and especially Kevin Nash) tried to keep his memory alive by mentioning him now and then even though he was in no condition to wrestle. Some of those occasions were obviously due to injury but the alcoholism certainly did not help.

The alcohol problem was turned into a storyline and this is when the biggest window of his career was closed. He went from a tough and cocky heel to a one-note joke. It is really sad to watch these scenes now as he, in storyline, showed up to work drunk. He would walk to the ring holding a cup of alcohol which he would hand off to his sidekick, Vincent. Vincent would have to wrangle the drunk by coaxing him to fight so that he could earn his drink back. The drinking problem was often not treated with the gravitas it deserved. It became really sad because the performer really was a sloppy drunk in real life. Thankfully, he never wrestled under the influence which would have been beyond the pale. This led to a storyline where best friends Hall and Nash were in opposition to each other. Nash would go on television and plead with his friend, basically delivering a public intervention. Again, this might have been compelling if it was just a storyline but Hall was really an alcoholic. It was low-class and his matches stunk during this period.

Alcohol and injury were not the only things to hamper Scott Hall. He was obviously being prepared for something bigger and better when he won the World War 3 match in 1998. He would be guaranteed a world heavyweight title shot but politicking from Hulk Hogan muddied the waters so that by the time Hall had the match with Sting, it was not as big a deal as it was. While Hall later returned to a more sober state and in better fighting shape, he rarely got another serious chance at winning the belt. He was a great talent in the wring and he deserved a better shot. The NWO is often blamed for choking the life out of the careers of young wrestlers but Hulk Hogan was the chief offender, not Hall. Nash was also pretty bad back in the day. Hall had enough political clout to keep in front of the camera but not enough to fully climb the mountain. His demons kept pulling him down as people on top kept pushing him down. Thankfully, he was able to share some of his wisdom in the business before he died.

Green Arrow: Escape From Supermax (Movie Pitch) Pt. 3

For a Cast of Characters and some fancasting, please click here.

Part 1 and Part 2

Interior – Control Room

Mammoth arrives at the control room and Merlyn welcomes him. However, he retreated from battle and Merlyn has no use for soldiers who retreat. A bunch of mind-controlled guards and KGBeast tase Mammoth and hold him down. Merlyn hands a collar to Bolton, commanding him to install the collar. When he hesitates, Merlyn states that he also has no use for soldiers who hesitate. Merlyn slips a collar around Bolton’s neck and we see the collar take over his mind. He orders him once again to collar Mammoth and he does so without hesitation.

Interior – Cell Blocks

Anarky alerts the others that he has discovered a signal being reproduced throughout the prison. He is not completely sure what the purpose is but found signatures for programmers named Jervis Tetch and a Mad Mod. He and the heroes have a simultaneous revelation — mind control. But none of the people present are mind-controlled so there must be another element to it. Knockout doubles down on their team, outraged at the idea of being mind-controlled.

China White steps into their path and tells them not to worry about mind control as they will not have heads soon. Green Arrow calls out to her and says that she must be worried about being mind-controlled. She is an intelligent criminal and that is nothing without free will. Nobody deserves to have that taken away. China orders the attack which leads to a huge pitched battle between the quartet (Magpie slips away again) and China’s forces. The four have to cut loose and go all out to win. In the madness, China White retreats. Magpie pops out and hits the last straggler with a back elbow, asking if the heroes are satisfied. She helped. Knockout tells her that sometimes you have to fight. Magpie replies that sometimes you don’t.

Interior – Control Room

China White makes her way into the control room and yells at Merlyn for the mind control, asking him if he intended to control her as well. He feigns innocence and then Mammoth grabs her arm and lifts her up. She twists around and hits Mammoth with a penalty kick between the legs, causing her to get dropped. She lands on her feet. She is ambushed by Bolton who collars her and we see her mind disappear just like the others.

Interior – Final Hallway

Green Arrow and Black Canary lay out what they are up against that they know of. Merlyn, Calculator, and whatever mind-controlled prisoners are in the final area. Arrow promises them nothing. No certainty. He lays out that he has not even cleared his own name for the murders Merlyn framed him for. He just asks that the three prisoners help him finish things. Not because he has a dangling carrot but because it is the right thing to do in so many senses of the word. They will all have their priorities and objectives to accomplish but none of them are alone.

Interior – Control Room

The room is dark. Merlyn sits under a single spotlight and welcomes Green Arrow, his nemesis to the end. He acknowledges that GA came a long way and fought through a lot but this is his end. Green Arrow says that he did not come alone. He could not have done it alone. And he didn’t have to mind-control anybody to get them to team up. Merlyn signals the lights on Black Canary, Magpie, Anarky, and Knockout. Merlyn gives them one last chance to either turn and run or bend the knee. Green Arrow’s allies decline. Merlyn turns the lights on for his own team. The final fight begins.

In the final fight:

Green Arrow goes toe to toe with Merlyn, their skills almost a perfect match. GA is occasionally distracted by a mind-controlled guard or two but keeps his focus.

Black Canary goes up against China White and some guards.

Magpie tries to escape again but is grabbed by Bolton. Remembering the words of Knockout, she finally decides to fight, using her quickness to counter the big man.

Anarky goes up against The Calculator in a battle of hacking and quips with a few punches thrown in as well.

Knockout squares up against Mammoth and KGBeast. She is fighting them when Solomon Grundy tears his way through the floor and enters the fight. Knockout remembers the heroes’ words of compassion and offers the same to Grundy. She says how sorry that he died again but he does not need to be used again these people. Grundy has risen again with more intelligence and agrees, making it more of a fair fight.

In the end, the five overcome their opponents and Anarky shuts off the mind-control signal. GA and Merlyn are still fighting but a newly freed China White attacks Merlyn, distracting him enough for GA and Black Canary to incapacitate both crooks. The five (and Grundy) stand victorious, happy but exhausted.

Interior – Control Room

The elevator access has been opened and the authorities are about to arrive. Green Arrow begs Black Canary to run as she is not a prisoner and she was not framed. She refuses to let him go, kissing him. They look back to the other three and they have disappeared. Green Arrow laughs to himself. Black Canary asks Whatever happened to togetherness? Green Arrow does not blame them for taking the opportunity. He’ll hold up his end of the bargain and still put in a good word for the three of them. The Justice League will catch them soon enough but maybe they will do some good out there. Maybe, Canary responds but her smile reveals her optimism.

The warden says that he is prepared to say they saved the prison and not only recaptured most of the prisoners but also added a few new ones. He gestures to Bolton, Calculator, and Merlyn.

The authorities arrive and they draw guns on the couple. Green Arrow kneels and puts his wrists out, ready to be cuffed again. The Warden walks into the line of fire and pleads their case. Black Canary also tries to explain. Agent Kate Spencer of the DEO walks out and tells everyone to put their guns down. Green Arrow’s name has already been cleared thanks to Oracle calling every number in law enforcement she could reach. Kate even pulls up the analysis of the doctored video and alternate angles, which show Merlyn committing the crimes. Kate says that since Green Arrow and Black Canary helped with a possible high-level prison break and the Justice League has a good reputation with the US government, they will just call this a wash. Green Arrow follows through and puts in a good word for the three missing prisoners but admits that they got away. Kate says that they will deal with it.

Kate gestures for the two heroes to take their leave and they climb into the elevator and start the journey to the surface. Canary says they are lucky to get away. Arrow says that it was not luck, it was the power of friendship yet again. Continue to take a chance on people and people will take a chance on you. They kiss again happily as their communicators suddenly come to life with the voice of a very concerned Oracle. They laugh.

Media Update 11/20/25

November 20, 2025

IT: Welcome to Derry (2025 – ?)

I have been pretty hyped about this show since it was announced but I allowed a couple of episodes to build up before I took the plunge. In the 1960s, newcomers and natives to the cursed town of Derry deal with a growing evil. Jovan Adepo plays the newly arrived Army major who is transferred in for a mysterious mission. Taylour Paige plays his wife, a woman who has participated heavily in The Movement and is never afraid to speak her mind. Blake Cameron James plays their son, a principled young boy. Clara Stack plays a troubled young girl whom people believe has gone crazy. Amanda Christine plays a young black girl who struggles against the town’s racism and injustice while standing up for her friends. Arian S. Cartaya plays an excitable motor-mouthed kid who is loyal to his friends. Chris Chalk plays an army man with a gift who may be familiar with longtime King readers. The show really captures the feeling of Stephen King and the now legendary world of IT (and beyond). Andy Muschietti’s visuals are mind-blowing and scary. The show is planned to go further back in time each season as the history of the town is explored. I am so psyched for where this show is going. I recommend this show.

The Imperfects (2022)

A random choice while looking around for stuff to play in the background. A trio of young people who underwent gene therapy find that they are experiencing superpowered side effects later in life. Morgan Taylor Campbell plays a sarcastic punk rock singer who develops powers similar to a banshee. Rhianna Jagpal plays an assexual medical researcher who suddenly develops the abilities of a succubus. Iñaki Godoy plays a comic book artist who finds that he can turn into a chupacabra. Italia Ricci plays the blunt genetic researcher who is trying to help the trio unravel the mystery and cure their ailments. Rhys Nicholson plays the arrogant scientist who created all of the problems. Kyra Zagorsky plays a ruthless woman who wants revenge for what was done to her. Celina Martin plays a monotone barista who is bitter about the experiments. I will be honest and say that I have almost bailed on this show a couple of times. It is fun but nothing amazing so far. I do really like the concept and the way that the powers manifest. I will probably stick with this for a little longer since there is only one season. I do not recommend this show.

The Thirteenth Floor (1999)

I remember people calling this a Matrix ripoff when it came out. When his boss is murdered, an employee of a company that maintains advanced virtual reality seeks answers. Craig Bierko plays the somewhat stoic employee at the center of the mystery. Gretchen Mol plays a mysterious woman who appears to complicate things. Vincent D’Onofrio plays a technician who tries to help Bierko solve the mystery. Dennis Haysbert plays a somewhat sarcastic and offbeat homicide detective. Armin Mueller-Stahl plays the victim but thanks to virtual reality, lingers after death. This is really not a Matrix ripoff. I can see why people might think that but it came out only a month after The Matrix so it is unlikely. It is more like Dark City mixed with LA Confidential with a bit of Matrix sprinkled in. The pacing is slow and it is more of a mystery than a trippy action-laced movie. I did not like this one. As I mentioned, the pacing is slow and there is not much humor or action in it. The mystery is not as compelling as other movies. I do not recommend this movie.

I saw one of these stupid bumper stickers while driving on Saturday and, like always, it annoyed me. I don’t know why people feel the need to justify or qualify liking or even loving my hometown. The phrase feels like they are begrudgingly admitting that they like Baltimore. Is it extraordinary to like the city you live in? Is it cringe? Is it weird? It feels to me like they are accentuating the negatives when they use statements like that. It feels very passive and lukewarm. I have loved Baltimore since I was a wee child. I do not feel the need to practically apologize when I say that.

I will freely admit that Baltimore has its flaws. Everywhere on Earth is flawed because people are flawed. Life is flawed. I have lived in both New Jersey and Maryland and I experienced different ways of life in those states. I was born in Baltimore and lived there for eighteen years. I then traveled back and forth between Baltimore and New Brunswick, NJ while I went to college. I then lived in rural New Jersey which I eventually found maddening. I grew homesick for Baltimore. I returned home to figure out my life. That took quite a while but I’m happy once again. Possibly the happiest I have ever been.

But as happy as I was to return to Baltimore, I do admit its flaws. I am not blind. We have a history of violent crime and murder. We have a history of corruption. Like many cities, we have a history with the mob, gangs, and the drug trade. They called us The City That Bleeds. We still have a problem with blight. But we keep moving forward. We try to tackle our problems together. Some of these problems are endemic to late-stage capitalism and will not go away.

Still, Baltimore has so many positives. We are rich in culture and we have great theaters, great music, and great museums. Our history is tied to the troubled poet Edgar Allen Poe. We have two great sports teams, one with a storied history and one that is still building its history. There are so many ethnicities and cultures thrown together that live in harmony. Traveling only a few blocks will bring you into an area of the city with a completely different vibe than the one before. We have a history of film and television (and not just The Wire). We have good colleges and universities.

In this toxic time, Baltimore City is still a liberal bastion that stands proudly against the current sitting president and his cronies. Unlike the surrounding counties, the city does not crumble under pressure and bow to fascism. While Baltimore has had a history of political corruption with its mayors and the police, we have not strayed from trying to find politicians who have our best interests at heart. Others turn to the Republicans with predictable results.

So if you are embarrassed to live in Baltimore, I feel bad for you. If you can afford a car with this bumper sticker, you should probably find somewhere else to live. I love this city. I will continue to do my best for it and I will sing its deserved praises. I am proud to tell people that I was born in Charm City.

Green Arrow: Escape From Supermax (Movie Pitch) Pt. 2

Interior – Supermax Control Room

Bolton and Calculator try to appease Merlyn that at least the crooks in intake slowed Green Arrow down. They have an optimised path where they can strike again. Merlyn is angry but calms himself down. He carefully selects the next candidates for an attack. If that doesn’t work, he needs to personally negotiate with the next option. Bolton asks if this is all they are going to do, try and kill superheroes. Merlyn says that ending Green Arrow was just a bonus that he could not resist going after. The real plan is to use special mind control collars to amass an army of some of the choicest villains available. He asks to Calculator to start working on the big guns but Merlyn will spring the next trap. Then he will go shopping for test subjects.

Interior – Supermax Organized Crime Wing

Merlyn walks down to a cell and presses a button next to it and the door becomes transparent. China White sits up from her bed and approaches the door with an interested smirk. The two fellow Green Arrow villains have not seen each other in quite some time. China asks what is happening; something big must be happening. Merlyn reveals that Green Arrow is in the prison and that Merlyn will kill him. He requests her assistance. They bargain for a few moments and China requests that her people be released. Merlyn agrees and promises to make her his partner in the endeavor. In fact, he will give her a key to open any cell she wants to amass a small army. She wonders what he is not saying but he avoids the issue.

Interior – Supermax Hallways

The heroes and Magpie are walking through a hallway when Green Arrow shoots a camera out. Magpie yells at him as he is just giving Merlyn a clear view of their path. Its best to just avoid the cameras. On the next hallway, Magpie demonstrates by flipping and moving fast to get pas the cameras. Once they are past, Green Arrow asks why Magpie isn’t a superhero. She says she just likes shiny things too much. Black Canary says she is selling herself short. Magpie reiterates that they need to be stealthy as Merlyn must have a computer guy. You can’t do it without a computer guy.

Interior – Supermax Control Room

Calculator pulls up a microphone and informs the heroes that he is that computer guy and much more.  Whether they shoot out or dodge the cameras, he still has so many toys to track them with. So many toys to kill them with.

Interior – Supermax Hallways

The heroes and Magpie are assaulted by a series of traps. Trapdoors which are defeated by GA and Magpie’s grappling hooks, giant gouts of fire that Magpie deals with by using a confiscated cold gun, electrified surfaces defeated by destroying electrical junctions, and so on. The trio breaks their way into a guard station to avoid an explosion. Once inside Green Arrow spots a cell roster that gives him an idea.

Interior – Organized Crime Wing

China White gives a rallying speech as she walks among the holding cells. She says that she has the key to release anybody who swears to follow her.  It does not matter whose gang they are a part of. Tonight, they are one gang. They are the gang that is going to kill Green Arrow and Black Canary. They can prove to their various masters that they are capable, that they are worthy. They can go back with news that they helped kill members of the Justice League. Or they can simply join up with China White and Merlyn and remain dominant. Their choice. Stay imprisoned or kill the heroes. She has many takers.

Interior – Cybercrimes Wing

Green Arrow presents to the team their very own computer guy. Meditating in the middle of a transparent cell is Lonnie Machin. They check the area for cameras and Lonnie tells them not to worry about it, there are no cameras. There are no electronics at all in this wing. The wing was actually designed for power-drinking villains like Parasite or Overload. They put Anarky in there as he was able to spring himself with only a stolen pen, a cell phone, and an outlet. Green Arrow updates him on what is going on.

Green Arrow knows from talking to Batman that Anarky could sometimes be a hero. Emphasis on “sometimes”. If they spring him, the heroes cannot promise his freedom but they will put in a good word. They need Anarky to counter Calculator. If Merlyn has taken over a whole prison, nothing good can come of it. He could release anybody he wanted to. Anarky responds that he believes that many do not deserve to be imprisoned and that he does not trust the State to handle prisons morally as the State itself is corrupt. He cites that the Supermax was built primarily for profit with public safety being a distant secondary concern.

Black Canary cuts him off and points out that they can talk about politics later. It is the hero’s duty to protect not only the public but the criminals who are kept in a vulnerable state. Merlyn could do things with or to the prisoners that they don’t even know about yet. This isn’t about the future of the Supermax. This is about saving the day right now. Anarky can get behind that. They spring him.

Interior – Guard Station

Anarky assembles a portable rig out of a data pad that he can mount on his wrist. He smiles and breathes in the connection to the world again and shuts down most of the motion sensors, cameras, and other devices used to track them. More importantly, it will be incredibly difficult for Calculator to spring traps on them again. Anarky points out that he has not shut everything down and Calculator still has more control since he is linked to the main line with full access.

Interior – Control Room

Merlyn dresses down Calculator for getting hacked by a relative child. He tells him to get his act together. Calculator promises that he still has worth as he still has control and can still spring some surprises on the heroes. Merlyn tells him to prove it. Calculator says that his superior intellect has told him where the heroes are likely to go next and they will soon die. Merlyn relents but shows off his first test subject, courtesy of mind control. The KGBeast stands completely under Merlyn’s control. Bolton is uncomfortable with this.

Interior – Supermax Metahuman Wing

Magpie leads the heroes through a heavy-duty airlock and warns them that they are about to enter the secure metahuman wing. Prisoners there have superpowers that far outclass the trio. They need to move quickly and get out as soon as possible. A lot of the villains in that area of the prison could probably single-handedly rip all three of them apart.

Interior – Supermax Metahuman Wing

The trio are walking by a series of huge, thick metal doors. Magpie explains that the cells are built tough as a secondary precaution because there are power dampeners inside.

Interior – Supermax Control Room

We see Calculator briefly as he grins at his screen and inputs a few keystrokes into his setup.

Interior – Supermax Metahuman Wing

A klaxon goes off causing Green Arrow, Black Canary, Magpie, and Anarky to freeze. Magpie tells the others to run. They start to run but the door to a cell flies off of its hinges and they barely stop in time to avoid getting hit by it. Solomon Grundy walks out of the cell, mumbling his simple nursery rhyme. He recognizes Green Arrow and Black Canary and begins to rampage. Magpie vanishes yet again. Two more doors burst open and Karshon and Mammoth emerge. At first, the tree monsters go after the heroes who manage to hold their own but they are well out of their weight class. Anarky has an idea that he hopes will work and he hacks into and breaks open another cell door. Knockout steps out of her cell. The heroes ask for her help but she brushes them off at first.

The three monsters start going after her and each other, creating a huge chaotic brawl. Knockout uses her super strength to go toe to toe with the monsters. She slams and suplexes the three with flair. When it looks like the three might work together to pull her apart, Green Arrow launches a smoke arrow into Karshon’s mouth, stunning him. Knockout shoves him back in a cell and then jams the door back on. Canary uses her cry to stun Grundy and Mammoth accidentally launches the zombie into a mess of electrical cords. Grundy is electrocuted and dies smoking. Knockout gets the upper hand on Mammoth but he decides to run for it instead. They lament that Grundy died but they know that it will not be long before he ressurects.

Anarky is able to seal the rest of the cells, preventing Calculator from remotely releasing anybody else. He is not sure how long it will hold, so they had better get going. Knockout again refuses to join up with them. Magpie reappears and points out that with the intake completely locked down, the only exit is the way they are heading. Knockout muses that her girlfriend is still out there and she wants to reunite. She will join them for now.

Cult of the Lamb

November 10, 2025

I recently played and beat The Cult of the Lamb, a game that was released in 2022. It was developed by Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital. I do not know much Massive Monster but I know that Devolver has a history of putting out weird and wild games. While I may not like some of the games Devolver put out, it was because the control or genre is not for me. It is not because they were bad games. I have enjoyed playing Broforce, Loop Hero, Inscryption, and I want to go back to Enter the Gungeon at some point. This game is inventive and fun and creates a game loop that makes it physically easy to put down but hard emotionally to put down.

The Story

The story begins with a poor lamb, the last of his kind, being brought before the four bishops of the old faith. The bishops are eldritch beings who are in charge of an oppressive religion that is endangering both those who believe in it and those who do not. The bishops sacrifice the lamb on their altar. In death, the lamb is brought to The One Who Waits who claims to be the true deity who has been chained and kept from their rightful place by the magicks of the bishops. The One Who Waits imparts their crown to the lamb and, along with it, a portion of their power. The lamb is resurrected and charged with creating a cult in honor of The One Who Waits and liberate the god from the chains that hold them. The lamb sets out to fight against the bishops and rescue creatures (other anthropomorphic animals) so that they can be inducted into the cult.

However, it is revealed throughout the Lamb’s journey that The One Who Waits was not always a god but was instead the fifth bishop, named Narinder. Narinder had been given dominion over Death. Narinder had grown too ambitious and they had been imprisoned for their treachery. The lamb fights and kills the four bishops which breaks the chains on The One Who Waits. The Lamb returns to their god who demands the return of their crown now that they are free. The Lamb has learned that, at best, Narinder will be as bad as the four bishops and might be even worse. The lamb decides to keep the crown which causes Narinder to lash out. Narinder summons all of the lamb’s followers and tries to sacrifice the lamb in front of them. The lamb fights back and defeats Narinder.

The lamb decides to spare Narinder, inducting him into the cult which is now devoted to the lamb as a living god-king. Upon returning to the mortal realm once again, the lamb encounters a being beyond time and space named The Merchant of Eternity. The Merchant informs the lamb that the spirits of the four bishops are caught between life and death. The lamb ventures into the domains of the bishops once again to defeat them in combat. Once each bishop is defeated, they are also inducted into the cult. The future is now in the hands of the lamb.

Gameplay

The first element of gameplay is roguelike combat. There are four domains of the bishops, each of which contains four dungeons. These dungeons are procedurally generated each time that the lamb enters them. All sorts of followers of the old faith and monsters beset upon the lamb. Luckily, the lamb is provided with five weapons in the form of a sword, a dagger, an axe, a warhammer, and a blunderbuss. They are also given a wide variety of offensive magical spells. A dungeon in each domain has to be beaten four times to get to unlock a door leading to a fight with a bishop. The first domain is Darkwood which is a summery forest. The second domain is Anura which is an autumnal forest. The third domain is actually underwater in Anchordeep with the power of the crown apparently allowing the lamb to breathe underwater. The final domain is Silk Cradle, a spider-infested cave system. If the lamb dies, they are resurrected by Narinder sent back to the cult to heal so that they can try again.

The second element of gameplay is the care, control, and management of the cult. The larger the cult gets, the more powerful the lamb can get. The followers pour their devotion into a statue in the center of their settlement which the lamb draws from to advance their society. A temple is also constructed where the lamb can deliver sermons to receive advancements in combat power and doctrines to shape the direction of the cult. There are also rituals that can be created which allow the lamb to push their cult in the right direction. Of course, what is “right” is up to how far the player wants to go. You can pick both mundane and occult rituals that are either life-affirming or more beyond the pale. Your cult can be into torture, sacrifice, and sin or it can be into support, order, and kindness. You can blend all of the above. Cult members will put in requests and denying their requests cause the cult to lose faith but some of those requests are worrisome. It is a balancing act based on what the player is comfortable with.

Observations

The lamb and the cult members are all cute anthropomorphic animals. They are almost always smiling and enthusiastic. The villains are all nasty and eldritch-looking creatures. When the five bishops are inducted into the cult, they are transformed into cute anthropomorphic characters.

When things get darker, there are frowns and terrified expressions but there is no blood or gore. The lamb was sacrificed with a knife on the altar but when the lamb sacrifices people, a tentacle comes from the deep and drags the screaming into the void. No blood. Maybe blood would have been easier.

Cult members grow old as the game goes on and eventually drop dead from old age or sickness. Sometimes cult members will kill each other. My Narinder was curbstomped to death in a drunken confrontation.

The above description of the plot is actually based on the average canon playthrough. The lamb is given decisions throughout the story which can end the game prematurely. You can surrender the crown to Narinder which leads to the lamb’s death and a game over. After Narinder’s defeat, the lamb is given the option to kill them. If the lamb chooses to kill Narinder, it proves that the lamb is no better than Narinder was.

Every single character (including random cult members) has a name. Nobody uses masculine or feminine pronouns. Nobody has an established sex or gender. Cult members can mate and lay eggs but it is never explained how. This is quite progressive and nice.

My favorite weapon is the blunderbuss as it allows the lamb to keep some distance. Committing to melee attacks brings more risk of damage. The sword is my second favorite. The axe and hammer are slower with a higher damage output. The dagger is fast but requires the lamb to get very close up.

There is a very neat sidequest involving an absolutely insane person with a mushroom growing out of their head. This person teaches the lamb the benefits of psychedelics in controlling the cult. They can eventually join the cult which causes them to become an absolute menace. I love them very much.
