Breakfast Series: Red Apple Diner

If you aren’t paying attention, you can drive right by this little place. Wedged in between a couple of commercial strip malls, this little ex-Pizza Hut building doesn’t really attract attention. But inside, the food is all about comfort. While I’ve had their specials, fried chicken, and chicken fried steak dinners, this place boasts a great all day breakfast menu. And since I do therapist visits early in the morning on my days off, <depression sucks, yo>, this is the perfect place to stop afterwards. After my chiropractor appointments that is. I’m old y’all, give the creaky man his due.

One of my favorite breakfasts to enjoy here is the country fried steak, with two sides. I usually get the fried okra because it’s a veggie, right? A fruit cup because it’s healthy too. And sometimes I order up a side biscuit with gravy, because you know, stick to your ribs. It also comes topped with a couple eggs, any way you like them. For the atmosphere of a rural diner, the friendly wait staff, the comfort level of the food, it’s not haute cuisine, but really good basic fare. They offer a huge breakfast all day menu, but I know what I like, and this is my go to order. Oh, and they carry Diet Dr Pepper. For when you want all the caffeine, but need to watch the sugar.

One final thing of note: They have pies. Much like Tippins has pies, they have not as many, but they do have several. So if you’re looking for breakfast/lunch/dinner with a slice of pie, you can get it here. If you are in the North Kansas City area, just North of Gladstone, be sure to stop in for a treat.

Connections and Memories

You ever have that one song, phrase, or picture that takes you back to earlier moments in your life? I hear certain songs, and my brain is instantly transported to me being about 7 years old, in the basement of our home in West Chicago, building with Lego bricks or racing slot cars with my oldest brother, that music playing in the background. Maybe it’s just my brain that finds connections with things like that. Hearing a line in a movie reminds me of something else. Oddball, tangential thoughts. I do this a lot with The Grinch, much to my daughter’s chagrin. And it’s about Grinch season. <wanders off to send her a Grinch conspiracy text>.

Todays post is about one such memory. Back in high school, I was on the track and field team, amongst other sports. Kept me out of trouble mostly, and out of the house. Which I’m sure made my mom’s life easier in many ways. On the track team, there was a kid who lived like three blocks from the school, and while he was not a bad kid, he was just very… Searching for a delicate expression here. Uh, he was kind of a pain in the ass. Mostly a decent kid, but sometimes his bravado <aka: hormones> got the best of him, and had his mouth writing a whole lotta checks his ass couldn’t cash, if you catch my drift.

On one particular day, everyone was kind of tired of him running his mouth about this, that or the other, and proceeded to do the kinds of things that groups of adolescent males do when in groups, be stupid. Well, specifically, they started just getting all over this kid about his appearance. His glasses, his braces, his height, basically ripping into him on a personal level. Then he just snapped. In a moment he went from cock sure dude-bro to crying, spouting off about how he was heading home to get his dad’s gun and coming back to shoot us all. Off he ran. Uh, yeah, coach? Can we all knock off early?

This was in the times before school shootings were fashionable, and so many thoughts and prayers were offered, but not much more than that. Where I grew up, guns were a tool, like a shovel or a hoe. If you used one, there was a purpose to it, and it wasn’t threatening to kill and entire student body. Looking back on the whole event from the old geezer view I currently have, I can see where so many things went wrong, escalated to that point, and how things should have been so different. But believe it or not, all of this was not why I decided to write this today.

It was all simply because I heard the song Pumped Up Kicks from Foster the People, and every time I hear that song, I think about that particular day, how things could have gone so wrong, and I’m not even sure how it didn’t. It never came up again after that day, but almost 40 years later, my brain hauls that memory out, and I wonder how he’s doing. I ought to go google stalk, uh, search him and see. Anyways, yeah, memories. Can’t remember names to save my life, but I clearly remember his. Go figure. Another reminder to be kind, you never know what someone is going through in their own life.

*** Footnote: He turned out pretty ok, and I’m happy for him.

Breakfast Series: Banksia Bistro

Short one here. Ok, not going to lie, I totally don’t drink coffee, it keeps me awake. Having said that, Banksia Bistro seemed to me more like a local coffee and pastry place upon first inspection. Also not going to lie, I totally went there because of the sausage rolls. Ground pork sausage and fennel, wrapped in puff pastry, baked to perfection. I’d had one in Illinois, and tried finding a place locally that had them. Enter Banksia Bistro, about the only one I’ve found so far. It was basically all I was there for, and they had both pork and lamb. Very nice place, very good food. Unfortunately, I don’t get around there much to try any of the other fare, but if you happen to be around that area, definitely worth the trip to stop in.

Breakfast Series: District Biskuits

After returning from my trip to Illinois, I sat and thought about my past food forays, though few in number, where I was trying local restaurants when my schedule allowed, and was a whole lot different. My current schedule lends itself well to breakfast. So it was that I found myself spending alternate weeks downtown at North Kansas City Hospital for tests, wound care visits, and the occaisional stay. There’s several fast food and donut places around, so I could get the usual breakfast fare, but after returning from Illinois, I decided to find the small businesses, the local eateries. And one that popped up on my list is still a favorite, District Biskuits.

Imagine a southern style comfort food place that served huge biscuit sandwiches, sides like mac and cheese, fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, and several juices too. On my very first venture in, I was kind of overwhelmed by all the choices. I went for the biscuits and gravy, and one of their signature sandwiches, The Wonder. Picture a huge biscuit sandwich, with a fried chicken filet, topped with an egg and cheese, and beef bacon. It came with hash round coins, but you can order up many side options including sweet potato or waffle fries. The sandwich alone will set you up for the whole day.

The biscuits and gravy was different from what I’d expected, but definitely not in a bad way. It was a brown sausage gravy, served over what I would call the biscuit equivalent of donut holes. Like, if you punched a one inch cutter into biscuit dough, and baked them. All topped with carmelized onions. Very delicious for sure. I’ve since tried the mac and cheese, gooey and lovely, and The Crown, which is basically a double smashburger on a biscuit. All of it good, stick to your ribs food that keeps me coming back time and again.

If you are in or aorund Kansas City, MO be sure to stop in and check out the menu, or maybe just grab a juice to go. Another one that gets five stars in my book.

Breakfast Series: Banana Cherry Bakery

On a visit to Rockford, Illinois a few years ago, my sister was going on about a small bakery located near her home. They had the most delicious pastries, meat pies, and my favorite, biscuits and gravy. Unfortunately, they were only open a few days a week, and my time there was just short enough that I wasn’t able to visit them that trip. Fast forward several months, and I’m back in town. I made sure my visit was long enough to be able to finally visit. It just so happened that it was my final day there, and I had to leave that morning for the drive back home.

I pulled up to a small, non-descript building, walked inside and was greeted by all the wondrous smells of fresh baked goods. I think the first time there, I ordered up a cherry danish, a sausage roll, a beef meat pie, but found out that the biscuits and gravy was made by another chef who had called off sick that morning. No biscuits, denied! Large pastries, made by a staff of classically trained french pastry chefs. Everything was handmade, flaky buttery layers of pastry goodness. The sausage roll was tremendous. Like a whole meal in a flaky pastry wrapped shell. And the meat pies appeared to be a half pie crust sized pastry folded over a mix of beef, vegetables, and spices that didn’t stand a chance of making it home. Let’s be honest, none of it made it home. I so wanted it to, but alas, the siren call of pastry…

Fast forward again about a year, and I’m back in town once again, but for an even longer stay. This time, I’ve got my eye on the biscuits and gravy prize. Biscuits so soft, and tender, gravy rich, meaty and thicker than my thighs. My sister is a mostly super healthy eater, but I managed to have her try some. Heaven! In fact, since that day, it’s been the measuring stick for any biscuits and gravy I’ve ordered anywhere. And I still haven’t found a place yet that can beat it. So, if you know of a place, drop a comment and I’ll see if I can make the trip to try it out. In fact, since beginning this, I’ve logged several new places to try from various sources. But if you happen to be in or passing through Rockford, Illinois, be sure to stop in. Five Stars for sure!

Almost two years later…

It’s been a while again. Here’s some of what’s been going on in the last 2 years:

  • New work schedule has me working fewer days, but 12 hours.
  • On and off foot wounds due to walking several miles a day at work. Both almost healed again!
  • The Missus got a cat, then promptly found out she is allergic to cats. Need a cat?
  • Began breakfast outings to get out more, doing fun stuff in strange places.
  • Crypto investment almost went sideways, money is safe, but the project lawyers are involved.
  • Due to bad weather, this is the first year we didn’t fire up the popcorn machine for Halloween!
  • Cleaned out/up two storage units. Emptied one, the other is half full. Decluttering Grade: B+
  • Still selling Lego bricks online. Have sorted through maybe 1,000 pounds of bulk, used bricks.
  • John Deere loader I bought: https://thelittlestdozer.wordpress.com/ is now ready to push dirt!
  • Still have the RV, but haven’t used it much. Me and Marie Kondo say: “Sell it!”
  • Engine went out in my 21YO truck. Facing $80K new truck or $12K new engine cost, engine won.
  • Became the HOA President in a 393 home association. It’s gone smoother than expected.

To rehash, I’m sure there’s more, but those are some of the big points. Still alive, still kicking, carefully because of the foot issues. Always thinking of all my old VOX Family, hoping you are all doing well. And those that are no longer with us are in my thoughts as well. It was a unique experience in blogging, and I’m so glad I got to know you all.

Beginning of the Breakfast Series

Greetings and salutations. Been a while, eh? Decided to dust off the old couch and have some discussions about breakfast. During the past several years, I’ve begun to realize that life is not all about chasing the dollar or working every minute possible. With a major schedule change at work last year, I suddenly found myself with more days off, time that I didin’t know what to do with. Instead of becoming a Netflix hermit on those days off, I decided to begin a journey, finding places to enjoy breakfast instead.

Due to health issues that require a rolodex of doctors and maintenance appointments, I find myself traveling around the North Kansas City area in the mornings, and feeling hungry. I’ve decided to document these breakfast trips. There’s a lot of little places that could use a boost, so I hope this gives them a little more traffic. Sadly, one of the places I found has already had to close. Small business owner who went through a bundle of personal and business issues, and finally had to face the hard choice to close up after years of hard work and effort.

But for the first in the series, I’ve got an out of town place that sort of began this whole thing. Out of State actually. I was visiting my sister in Rockford, Illinois and she found this little hole in the wall, only open a few days a week, small batch pastry shop. I bought several items to take home, and a few to eat on the way. I ended up with nothing left by the time I arrived home several hours later. Delicious. That experience led me to begin searching for those little places locally. I asked around, hit Google up, even talked amongst all the myriad of doctors and staff I routinely dealt with. Where do you go for breakfast? Where’s a good place you’ve heard about? And what’s your favorite place to get biscuits and gravy (my favorite)?.

Of course, I’ve tried the big chains. Some are pretty decent. It had been several years since I’d been to most, so I revisited to make sure quality was still there. Even tried a few new chain places. It has now become a thing where I’m even occasionally taking kids or grandkids out, depending on who’s available and what’s going on that day. Like a Where’s Waldo adventure, but for Breakfast. Anyways, I’ll do a catch up post with what’s been going on in life, and begin drafting Breakfast Series posts afterwards. And doing quiet a bit of dusting around here too from the looks of things.

Good to be back! Hope you’re hungry!

Holding Back the Years…

It’s been a while, hasn’t it. Here’s some of what’s been going on in the last 5-6 years:

  • Sold the old house, finally, and at the peak of the real estate market!
  • Had foot surgery on left foot due to broken in several places.
  • Fractured right foot in probably the stupidest way possible.
  • Maintained my weight at 320 for the last 5-6 years!
  • Invested in an NFT/Crypto project that (knock on wood) didn’t steal my money.
  • Bought a soccer mom van for the Missus, traded in her 2006 Mustang GT convertible.
  • Several years of Halloween popcorn madness in the new house! 300-400 visitors a year!
  • Still dealing Lego bricks online. Bought 8,000+ pounds of bulk, used bricks.
  • Bought a John Deere tracked loader, online, at auction, in Wisconsin, sight unseen, for $1,300. It runs!
  • Got rid of one RV, still have the other. Probably be selling it this year though.
  • Bought one of those huge-mongous rolls of firecrackers, and it sounded like the whole neighborhood blew up!

I’m sure there’s more, but those are some of the big points. Still alive, still kicking, carefully because of the foot issues. Not sure when I’ll update again, hopefully before the next 5-6 years. Always thinking of all my old VOX Family, hoping you are all doing well. And those that are no longer with us, they are in my thoughts as well. It was a unique experience in blogging, and I’m so glad I got to know you all.

Damn Kids…

I tweeted last night that once you have kids, you own them for life. They grow up, move out, but they are still yours. And when life happens, they call, and you answer. last night found me relaxing on the couch, waiting to watch Dirk Gently on BBC, one of my favorite shows. The phone rang, it was Middle Daughter. I never know what to expect when she calls, it could be anything. This time, she was about a half hour away with the four kids, she was in a lot of pain and having trouble breathing. Get thee to the hospital!

I met Middle Daughter in the ER, there with four kids and a deer in the headlights look. Dad Mode kicked in. I made quick plans to get the grandkids home with the Missus, and I’d return to sit with her until she had some answers. I had a good talk with the grandkids on the way home about what to do in emergencies, how things happen in life and how everything should be just fine. I left them at the house, calmly doing kid stuff, playing with bricks and watching cartoons.

The hospital did four major tests, said she presented with a possible heart attack. Folks, women can have completely different symptoms for heart attack than men, so if you are not sure, go get it checked out. Your parents will thank you for that. After hours of tests, they ruled out several heart issues, had x-rayed her back to see if a disc had slipped or something else, even performed an ultrasound on her gall bladder, as she’s had issues before with it. All came back good.

Which means that while they don’t know exactly what the problem is, they believe they can rule out the killers. Which is good. She’s scheduled for some followup labs Monday. They’ve given her a couple of meds to deal with the pain and help relax her muscles. She’s not quite out of the woods, but she can see the clearing. It was while heading home last night that I was reminded of a really bad incident from her past. There have been several.

In 2002, while I was in Chicago dealing with the death of my brother, I got a call from Middle Daughter. She’d been in an accident which totaled her car. Found out later there’d been multiple injuries, and they had to resuscitate her at the scene. My daughter had died. She’d been dead. Was brought back to life. Yeah, I was an emotional mess. AM an emotional mess. Damn kids. I only bring this up because last night, it came up among the grandkids, and things went sideways for a bit.

When Middle Grandson dropped that fact, Oldest Grandson didn’t recall ever hearing about it and got very upset, to put it lightly. The Missus had her hands full for a while. Fortunately it occurred just before Middle Daughter was released, so when I called home to update the Missus, they were all around the phone to hear that Mommy was better and coming home. Adrenaline that was running high all night faded, and the girls were passed out by the time we got home, with the boys almost there.

Take a few minutes today to hug your kids, because calls like this, while they hopefully don’t come often, do happen. Kids, they’re for life.

Dust. So much dust…

Life. Hahahaha. *wipes tear* So, where was I? Oh yeah… Life. Quick run down on what’s been going on for the last few… years:

  • Lego brick business did well, moved to an office space, and it grew
  • Fixed up house, built a deck and then decided to buy a new house
  • Worked a metric ass-tonne of overtime
  • Almost died, ended up in hospital and on bed rest for two months
  • Bought new house while in hospital
  • Moved house while on bed rest
  • Dropped weight from then 450+ to current 320 LBS (was 300, but more bed rest)
  • Finishing up work at old house just a year after buying new house
  • Bought a popcorn machine, a big one
  • Moved Lego brick business back home at new house

And that’s the big points. I’ll make up some posts about each one as I get time. Looking forward to Halloween this year though, finally in a house where we get kids stopping by. So we loaded up on goodies and I’m bringing out the popcorn machine, so we can hand out popped corn to the parents who wander the streets with their kids. Looking to have about 200 kids stop by this year.

Looking to end the year on a good note and have a fantastic New year coming in.
