With the coming-of-age of the World Wide Web and the boundaries it broke down with it, came a new wave of western influence in third world countries among those privileged enough to be able to access the internet. We no longer simply follow old western trends that have been brought to our society long after they’ve withered and died. Now, we could not only instantly imitate popular styles and trends, but thanks to Social Media we are also able to contribute to the ever-growing western culture. We’ve seen “fashionistas” transform into “hijabistas”, bohemian styles meet Bedouin chic; Western trends adapt and transform into our own Egyptian take on them. But what happens to the culture, the morals and ethics, the ideologies and ways of thinking, that also find their way from their western homelands to our desert gates?
