Drop Your Burdens

God is so good. I was really feeling burdened today, and these are the selections that He prepared for me in my devotionals:

My heart rejoices in You, Lord, for You are my strong shelter in times of trouble and danger and stress, my hiding place to whom I may continually resort…my Father who lovingly provides for me…my Shepherd who guides and protects me…my Champion who upholds my cause as His child and defends my highest interests…my Bridegroom who delights in me…my God who is mighty to save, who rests in His love for me and rejoices over me with singing, with shouts of joy. You are my inheritance, my share in life, the One who satisfies my longing soul and fills my hungry soul with goodness.

I praise You for Your love and Your wisdom. You are too wise to ever make a mistake, too loving to ever do anything unkind. You act on my behalf, accomplishing what concerns me and fulfilling Your purpose for me as I call on You. Thank You that You love me deeply and tenderly. You are compassionate and gracious, full of lovingkindness, ready to forgive, patiently considerate, and generous beyond imagining. You desire my love and rejoice to do good things for me. You delight to give me the desires of my heart as I delight myself in You. How precious is Your love to me, O God! I sing for joy as I take refuge in the shadow of Your wings!

There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God. (Hebrews 4:9)

That rest includes victory: “The LORD gave them rest on every side…The LORD handed all their enemies over to them” (Joshua 21:44). “Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (I Corinthians 15:57).

A prominent believer once told of his mother, who was a very anxious and troubled Christian. He would often talk with her for hours, trying to convince her of the sinfulness of worrying, but to no avail. She was like the elderly woman who once said that she had suffered a great deal, especially from the troubles that never came.

Then one morning his mother came to breakfast with a smile adorning her face. He asked her what had happened, and she began describing a dream she had in the night. In her dream, she was walking along a highway with a large crowd of people, all of whom seemed very tired and burdened. The people were all carrying little black bundles, and she noticed that more bundles were being dropped along the way by numerous repulsive-looking creatures that seemed quite demonic in nature. As the bundles were dropped, the people stooped down to pick them up and carry them.

Like everyone else in her dream, she also carried her needless load, being weighted down with the Devil’s bundles. After a while, she looked up and saw a Man whose face was loving and bright as He moved through the crowd, comforting the people. Finally He came to her, and she realized it was her Savior. She looked at Him, telling Him how tired she was, and He smiled sadly and said, “My dear child, these bundles you carry are not from me, and you have no need of them. They are the Devil’s burdens, and they are wearing out your life. You need to drop them and simply refuse to touch them with even one of your fingers. Then you will find your path easy, and you will feel as if ‘I carried you on eagles’ wings’ [Exodus 19:4].”

The Savior touched her hand, and peace and joy quickly filled her soul. As she saw herself in her dream casting her burdens to the ground and ready to throw herself at His feet in joyful thanksgiving, she suddenly awoke, finding that all her worries were gone.

From that day forward to the end of her life, she was the most cheerful and happy member of her family.

And the night will be filled with music,

And the cares that besiege the day,

Will fold their tents like the Arabs,

And will silently steal away.  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Control vs. Surrender

Control is such a wonderful, desirable attribute.

And yet, it is extremely elusive. Which would make sense, because control–as we know it–cannot be attained. It is only possessed by God.

I like to *be in control* ((cough)). Okay, let me rephrase that. I like to attempt to be in control. But one thing is always true about this desire: it never comes to fruition.

I’m finding that in order to have “control,” I need to let go.

Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.
In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.
~ Proverbs 3:5-6 Amplified Bible (AMP)

In light of this passage, is it really Control vs. Surrender, OR Control = Surrender?

Let me know what you think! 🙂

A Discouraged Heart & Leftover Thanksgiving Dinner

Have you ever tried to mix discouragement with praise?

I have, and it’s hard. But it’s just what I needed to do.

As I heated up my plate of leftover food from Thanksgiving dinner, I couldn’t help but feel “down.” I had so many things on my mind–so many things to worry about.

But then I got to thinking about that plate of food…

God provided that plate of food. God also provided the mother who cooked the food that went on that plate. He provided the other family members in my life, along with my friends, and the people at my church.

He provided a home for my husband and I to live in. He provided a job for my husband so that he could support us. He provided clothing and shoes and a warm bed to sleep in.

He provided running water, heat, and so many other things that I take for granted everyday.

And I started to realize…

Yes, I’m feeling discouraged at the moment. And yes, there are difficult things in my life. BUT, I have many, many things to be thankful for.

Especially the yummy leftover Thanksgiving dinner that helped me to realize this.

My praise may be a little late in coming, but somehow I don’t think it matters to God. 🙂

Unmotivated but Hopeful

I’m feeling very unmotivated today. I have many things that I could be–should be–doing, but all I want to do is relax and take some time to do things that I enjoy. It’s a difficult balance, because you definitely need to do both.

My psychiatrist changed my medication last week, and I have been feeling more tired and depressed. This concerned me, so I called her several days ago…but she just said that it will take more time for the medicine to fully kick in. It’s not very comforting to know that it’s a holiday weekend, and that I will not be able to contact her if I need to.

It’s frustrating that these meds are supposed to boost my mood and help me feel less anxious, and yet they seem to be doing the opposite. That’s one thing that has always confused me about these types of medications: you really have to push through the side effects before you can see if they are going to help you. And you never know if they will! You just have to give it a try, and be willing to start all over again if they’re not a good fit. 😦

But I must CHOOSE to be thankful. God has brought me this far, and I have to believe that He will continue to lead me and guide me in the way that He would have me to go…as well as to give me the grace to handle whatever I encounter. ❤

Give Thanks

Psalm 136

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods.
His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords.
His faithful love endures forever.

Give thanks to him who alone does mighty miracles.
His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to him who made the heavens so skillfully.
His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to him who placed the earth among the waters.
His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to him who made the heavenly lights—
His faithful love endures forever.
the sun to rule the day,
His faithful love endures forever.
and the moon and stars to rule the night.
His faithful love endures forever.

10 Give thanks to him who killed the firstborn of Egypt.
His faithful love endures forever.
11 He brought Israel out of Egypt.
His faithful love endures forever.
12 He acted with a strong hand and powerful arm.
His faithful love endures forever.
13 Give thanks to him who parted the Red Sea.
His faithful love endures forever.
14 He led Israel safely through,
His faithful love endures forever.
15 but he hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea.
His faithful love endures forever.
16 Give thanks to him who led his people through the wilderness.
His faithful love endures forever.

17 Give thanks to him who struck down mighty kings.
His faithful love endures forever.
18 He killed powerful kings—
His faithful love endures forever.
19 Sihon king of the Amorites,
His faithful love endures forever.
20 and Og king of Bashan.
His faithful love endures forever.
21 God gave the land of these kings as an inheritance—
His faithful love endures forever.
22 a special possession to his servant Israel.
His faithful love endures forever.

23 He remembered us in our weakness.
His faithful love endures forever.
24 He saved us from our enemies.
His faithful love endures forever.
25 He gives food to every living thing.
His faithful love endures forever.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His faithful love endures forever.

Stand Still and See

I’m standing, Lord:
There is a mist that blinds my sight.
Steep jagged rocks, front, left, and right,
Lower, dim, gigantic, in the night.

Where is the way?

I’m standing, Lord:

The black rock hems me in behind.
Above my head a moaning wind
Chills and oppresses heart and mind.
I am afraid!

I’m standing, Lord:
The rock is hard beneath my feet;
I nearly slipped, Lord, on the sleet.
So weary, Lord, and where a seat?
Still must I stand?

He answered me, and on His face
A look ineffable of grace,
Of perfect, understanding love,
Which all my murmuring did remove.

I’m standing, Lord;
Since Thou hast spoken, Lord, I see
Thou hast surrounded; these rocks are Thee!
And since Thy love encloses me,
I stand and sing.

Come to Jesus

Weak and wounded sinner,
Lost and left to die,
O, raise your head for Love is passing by

Come to Jesus,
Come to Jesus,
Come to Jesus and live

Now your burden’s lifted,
And carried far away,
And precious blood has washed away the stain… so

Sing to Jesus ,
Sing to Jesus ,
Sing to Jesus and live

And like a newborn baby,
Don’t be afraid to crawl,
And remember when you walk sometimes we fall… so

Fall on Jesus,
Fall on Jesus,
Fall on Jesus and live

Sometimes the way is lonely,
And steep and filled with pain,
So if your sky is dark and pours the rain… then

Cry to Jesus,
Cry to Jesus,
Cry to Jesus and live

O, and when the love spills over,
And music fills the night,
And when you can’t contain you joy inside… then

Dance for Jesus,
Dance for Jesus,
Dance for Jesus and live

And with your final heartbeat,
Kiss the world goodbye,
Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory’s side… and

Fly to Jesus,
Fly to Jesus,
Fly to Jesus and live

Fly to Jesus,
Fly to Jesus,
Fly to Jesus and live
