Everything good needs time. Donβt do work in a hurry. Go into details; it pays in every way. Time means power for your work. Mediocrity is always in a rush; but whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing with consideration. For genius is nothing more nor less than doing well what anyone can do badly.
Attention is the oxygen of conflict. When you fight a problem, you breathe life into it. When you starve a problem of your attention, you suffocate it.
In a surprising number of cases, the way to solve a problem is to ignore it.
Drift’s work “shylight” on view at 3 of @NYCBallet Art Series performances on JAN 27, FEB 3, FEB 9
Dutch artists @studiodrift create experiential sculptures, installations, and performances. Their installation for this year’s art series curates “shylight” into a site-specific, performative sculpture uniting industrial motors with silk. The multi-layered chalice-like structures move like a dancer in natural choreography, intending to find live emotion and personality in an inanimate material. shylight’s unpredictable, natural-looking movements become alive, descending/blossoming, subsequently closing/retreating upward again.
It’s a wonderful piece to watch pre-show. And after the show, a live musical performance happens underneath “shylight” followed by DJ Dancing (& free beer & “hard” Selzer").
The dances of the night were:
1. George Balanchine’s “Allegro Brillante,” set to Tschaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 3, Balanchine referred to this piece as “everything I know about classical ballet in thirteen minutes.”
2. Christopher Wheeldon’s “Liturgy” set to Arvo Pärt, My favorite of the night, looks simple but is complex, forming modern takes on classical elements. Also, music is 🙌.
3. Walpurgisnacht set to Charles Gounod, choreographed by George Balanchine and staged by Brigitte Thom, High Energy, and all 24 dancers have their long hair down. How do they do all those moves without getting hair in their face? Balanchine once famously said, “ballet is a woman,” I get it; long hair = woman. Boom, you win, Balanchine, you win.
4. Firebird is set to Igor Stravinsky and choreographed by George Balanchine & Jerome Robbins. I liked it. @katherine A classic piece themed with Charlie’s scenic/projections & costumes makes for a fun story and ending. I may be biased; I think I’d enjoy getting beaten up in the face by aliens if Stravinsky played in the background and the assailants were keeping time. It wouldn’t be the bottom. Blame it on Disney’s film “Fantasia”; Stravinsky is 🔥

Diana Thater: Practical Effects - Video installation at @davidzwirner gallery’s 519 West 19th Street location, ends this weekend (Dec 10th)
Since the early 1990s, Thater has pioneered film, video, light, and sound, continually challenging the boundaries of time-based media and installation art. Her work explores the relationship between the natural and artificial worlds while critically examining the structures of mediated reality. Thater installs a silver circus tent that will fill the entirety of the gallery, using the semi-translucent round structure as an immersive, multichannel projection screen. Approaching the idea of post-apocalyptic life through a poignant and reflective lens, Practical Effects speculates on the nature of our world in the coming years and centuries and explores how the relationships between man, machine, and the animal might evolve in tandem with the physical and psychical condition of future Earth and its remaining inhabitants.

@JordanMatthewWolfson ’s “Female Figure”, 2014, at @thebrantfoundation . Last exhibited in NYC in 2014, this technologically complex sculpture is on view until Dec 31.
(Female Figure) combines film, installation and performance into an #animatronic figure. As the sculpture gracefully dances to blaring pop-music, the whirrs and creaks from the figure’s joints remind the viewer of its technological construction. Simultaneously, Wolfson’s voice projects from the figure: the phrase, “My mother is dead, my father is dead, I’m gay, I’d like to be a poet, this is my house,” and the command to “Tell them touch is love,” are just two examples of the disorienting voiceover. There is no way to avoid sculpture’s narration nor gaze. (Female Figure) creates a different kind of viewing experience that inherently incorporates the viewer into the troubling and provoking performance of the sculpture. Here, it is the agitating tension between subject and object that truly encapsulates Wolfson’s immersive installation. #JordanWolfson

Do Ho Suh “Inverted Monument, 2022"on view until Nov 5, 2022 at @LehmannMaupin NY
Lehmann Maupin presents new work by London-based artist Do Ho Suh. Working across various media, he engages ideas of home, memory, psychic space, and displacement. In this show, Suh expands on his exploration of the politics and subjectivity of memory.
Suh has long been interested in the role of public monuments, and the “self-authorizing framework” of the pedestal. The opening work Inverted Monument (2022), a large-scale sculpture made of extruded thermoplastic polyester developed with a robotics team. Combining robotic and analogue techniques, this sculpture questions the authority and agency of the artist’s hand. Intricately rendered, Inverted Monument draws on generalized concepts of an “ideal” monument based on Western statuary lexicon and the power structures it upholds. The requisite commemorative figure is positioned upside down within the classically proportioned pedestal, the top of the figure’s head grazing its base. Here, Suh redirects the viewer’s gaze from the top of the pedestal to its very bottom, turning the logic of the public monument on its head and challenging what and who we choose to elevate in civic spaces.
Also included in the show is a new work composed of elements from Suh’s long-running Specimen series. Comprising detailed fabric replicas of objects from his past and present residences and studio spaces, Suh’s Specimen includes doorknobs, light switches, cupboard handles, and bath fittings. Each sculpture is precisely measured and modeled after a household object that has been habitually touched by the artist—those with which we often have a deep and unquestioning familiarity. While Suh’s Specimen are typically exhibited in groupings based on type or location, in this exhibition the artist brings together more than 400 objects to create a new installation, titled Jet Lag (2022). Uniting multiple geographies and different phases of his life in a single work, Suh collapses physical coordinates and linear time, presenting each Specimen as part of the sum of a lifetime’s domestic memory and opening up the possibility of space as transportable.

Jenny Holzer: “Demented Words” at @Hauser & Wirth NY. Holzer’s long awaited solo show in New York, on view til Oct 29th.
‘WTF’ (2022), is a swinging electronic sign with tweets posted by Donald Trump during his presidency and posts by Q, leader of the QAnon conspiracy. The latest in a string of experiments with kinetics, ‘WTF’ slides along a track in an unpredictable cadence that echoes the erratic rhythm with which the messages appeared online.
Acting as a centerpiece the sign’s flashing and scrolling texts illuminate nearly 300 ‘curse tablets’ lining gallery walls and scattered across the floor. This new body of work was inspired by inscribed lead tablets used by ancient Romans to seek vengeance.
Holzer’s tablets were created by stamping tweets onto metal fragments, then distressing and aging them through crumpling, folding, piercing and chemical baths.
