Visiting Kaskus (July 10, 2012)

Posted on

Howdy! I had a completely different way of wasting my office hour yesterday! You guess what? We got a chance to visit Kaskus Playground! 😀 Well, at least that’s how they call it. P L A Y G R O U N D. Sounds fun, isn’t it? I think they hate the term “office” so much. We went there together with Mr. On Lee & the other internees. Just for your information, Mr. On lee is the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) of GDP Venture. You can look through his Linked In profile here. He’s such a great man.

So, back to the playground..

We arrived at the office which is hidden somewhere, and I found myself glaring at every corner of the room as the office, erm I mean playground, is completely different from what I’ve been expecting!

We headed to the Waiting Room which is dreadfully cushioned & spent our 30 minutes there. Hey, you know what? It doesn’t even look like a waiting room, which should usually be white, neat, & boring. This so called “Waiting Room” has a grass carpet, comfy sofas, gun toys, & mini golf arena. If only my dentist’s waiting room is that comfy, I would love to wait for her all day long.

After quite a while, two public relation staff approached us and soon after that, they became our ‘tour guide’ for the next 3 hours. We went to Pertamax Wall which is simply a wall full of white tile where you can write down your comment about Kaskus. Pretty similar with wall of fame. But what makes this wall even more special is that there’s a toilet hanging on the wall! A real toilet!

Kaskus Toilet

There’s a mirror inside & I didn’t even notice why it was there. I was like : “What is that piece of mirror doing there??” And then I decided not to think further about it. But now I get the joke! The joke is : when you look down to that toilet, you can see the shit as clearly as yourself, meaning : You’re a shit! Hahaha, well said brother, well said.

Soon after playing with that “shit-thing”, we headed to the officers’ room.

… we also had a quick warm lunch at the canteen

Lunch at Kaskus

Soon after we finished our lunch, we are gathered in the auditorium where Andrew & Ken, the founder of Kaskus, will have 1 hour of sharing session.

I was inspired & confused, as what they said is just exactly what I’ve been thinking of these last few days. It’s about our future career. Whether we want to start our own company or work in a big company should be carefully considered right from this moment on. That’s what I’ve been thinking about recently, and I can’t even reach any conclusion! No, not yet. They also said, the most important thing of  starting a startup company is passion, and of course, you should know & focus on your goal. And no matter how, you should NOT quit before you reach that goal. The different between starting your own company and working for a big company is what you gave. Starting a startup company means you should spare your time, money, idea, and all you have to make that company works. Meanwhile, working for a big company means you should supply your time, idea, & energy for that company. It’s sort of the same thing for them.

If you say : “I don’t wanna spend my time starting a company, because you know, I don’t know what will this be at the end. I may turn out to be so rich, or I may lose all of my money and time. I don’t wanna take a risk.” or “I have a startup company, and I haven’t even got any profit for 1 year! I should quit.”

Well, I’m sure Andrew & Ken will laugh at you, as Kaskus was found 12 years ago while at the first 4 years, they didn’t even get any income. Andrews used his own money for paying the hosting services (around US$ 15 – US$ 30 per month, at that time). But they see this idea, this product, as a great business opportunity. So here they are. Can you see how big that company now? It’s huge! It’s the biggest Indonesian Community.

Please note that everything you need to make your product works & accepted by most people are passion, patient, goal, & strategy. Then you’ll find your own way to success. But don’t forget that a great partner is also important because you can never work alone.

Soooo, thanks a lot for your time, Andrew & Ken! We really appreciate that! I’ll find my own way to success, soon!

So, that’s how our “fieldtrip” ended. THANK YOU, KASKUS! We had a greatttt time! ♥

Internship Experience : The 1st Month

Posted on

June has finally came to its end, and that means : “It’s been a month since I started working as an internee here, in GDP Venture. Yay!”

Yup, I got a chance to work here during my summer holiday this year. This is how I waste my 2 months of holiday. Actually, I began my part-time job since April 2012. We’ve been working with this project  for 3 months. And since I got a holiday this June till August, me and my team was assigned to work full-time in the office in Ks.Tubun, Jakarta, which is VERY CROWDED during weekdays. But believe me, the office is sooo comfortable.

GDP Venture Internship

I still remember how nervous I am in the first day of internship. I don’t know what to wear, how to socialize with another officer, how quickly I should have my assignment complete, and what the working atmosphere will be like. But then, everything turned out to be just fine. I got new friends (well, a few), new experience, new knowledge (which I haven’t even got from college), and of course, … FREE LUNCH! (This is what university students are looking for, right?)

Then, we have Brown Bag Talk here every Monday, which is scheduled to take place during lunch break. It’s an hour break when someone will share his knowledge to us. And when the talk finished, I was like “Oh my God. What was that??” or “Hey! Did you get it? Because I completely don’t.”  Yeah, I NEED to learn more.

And if you asked me if I got some difficulties here, of course I do. Because everything I do here is like something really new to me. But then, my mentor & friends help me. My internship is sooo exciting during the first two weeks.

Third week — I began to feel that my daily routine is kinda, boring perhaps? Because you know, I woke up at 7, then I’ll have my quick breakfast, took a bath. And then I’ll be in the office at 08.00, have my lunch at 11.30 & go home at 17.00. As soon as I reach home, I’ll take a bath, have my dinner, watch a movie, & sleep until I find my self waking up at 07.00 in the morning & do the exact same thing as I do the day before. Well, except weekend. I’ll go to my grandma’s at weekend. But going to my grandma’s house is also a routine, right? Yeah, this is my life now. Well at least until July 31st 2012.

This thing bothers my mind a little bit quite recently. Will I spend my 8 hours in 5 days of a week for the whole year in the office like this when I graduate 2 years later? Seems like not a good way to live, at least to me. And the sad thing is, I should do this again next year, to fulfill my credits for the 6th semester.

If I don’t want to spend my life in the office like this, I should find another way to gain money & money & a lot lot of money for my future life. Of course I can’t just relax with my novel & coffee at home while my husband is working for money. But then I can’t be a hard-worker woman that don’t even care about her family as well.

Ah, this thing bothers me a lot. (But I still love my new experience here).

Homemade Garlic Stick Bread

Posted on

When the sun greets me, there’s nothing I can think of except “Hmm let’s see what I can make for today’s breakfast…”. Then I will search the internet for any recipes, run to the kitchen, & cook my surprising breakfast meal. I always love my morning!

That time, I still have a looot of white bread. (Well I know that I’m supposed to use loaf Italian bread instead for making a garlic bread. But who cares? It still tastes just great.)
So I decided to make garlic bread! And I also don’t have garlic powder with me. I mean, I didn’t even know that “garlic powder” exists (that time). So I used crushed garlic instead.

So here it is! A crunchy, buttery, garlicky Garlic Bread…

Garlic Bread

I never thought that making a garlic bread is that easy.
You only need :
– Butter
– a LOT of minced garlic.
– Dried oregano (But I used basil leave)
– Salt
– (and of course) Bread

Basil Leaves
First, mince the garlic & crush them. Then in a small bowl, mix together butter, garlic, dried oregano, and salt (if you prefer a salty taste).
Spread the mixture on each of the bread slice. (I cut my bread into some slices).

Then on a non-stick pan, bake the buttery bread until it’s golden enough on both sides.

And done! It doesn’t even take a long time..

Garlic Bread

It smells so good, and tastes even better! Enjoy your morning! 😀 Ah, and don’t forget your coffee.
