TREK RINJANI

Posted: July 1, 2011 in RINJANI TREKKING

TREK RINJANI

Our professionally-run Mount Rinjani treks offer you a choice of magnificent Lombok scenery and culture with full catering and experienced guides and porters. Trekking highlights include:

Majestic Mount Rinjani: Rinjani is the highest mountain on Lombok and Indonesia’s second highest volcano. At 3726 metres, it soars above the island and dominates the landscape, but usually by mid-morning the summit is shrouded in cloud. The active volcano last erupted in 1901. It features a huge crater containing a large green, crescent-shaped lake, Segara Anak, which is about 6km across at its widest point. The sacred lake is 600 vertical meters below the caldera rim, and in the middle of its curve there is new and active cone, Mount Baru (also known as Mount Barujari), at 2363 metres. There is series of natural, hot springs on the north-eastern side of the caldera. Known as Kokok Putih, the springs are believed to have remarkable healing powers.

Rinjani National Park: The dramatic landscape around Mount Rinjani, part of the famous Ring of Fire, has been created over millions of years of cone-building, violent explosions and erosion. Forested slopes rising directly from the sea create their own weather pattern and act as water-collectors for the whole of Lombok. For the people of Lombok, Sasak and Balinese alike, the volcano is revered as a sacred place and home of the Gods. Segara Anak lake is the destination of thousands of pilgrims who place offerings in the water and bathe away disease in the hot springs. The endemic duck belibis is found here and several species of fish are recorded. Established in 1997, the 41,330ha Rinjani reserve is one of more than 40 national parks in Indonesia.

Senaru: Senaru village is the main gateway to Rinjani National Park and is the most popular start point for Rinjani treks. The cool, flower-filled mountain village on Rinjani’s slopes stretches up a hillside spur along a winding road above Bayan. It is a scenic 2.5 hours drive from Senggigi. The village includes the communities of Senaru Batu Koq and Tumpangsari which offer accommodation in simple but pretty home stays with lovely views.

Sembalun Lawang: Sembalun Lawang is set in an ancient and fertile caldera to the east of Mount Rinjani, the preferred access route for summiteers. The area’s rich soil produces high-quality market garden crops, including famous garlic and rice. Seismic activity is monitored daily at the government Rinjani Volcanology Centre. The beautiful valley of Sembalun is also known for its hill walks, recently restored traditional village, culture performances and local weavers.

Rinjani Trek Center: The Rinjani Trek Center is located at the top of Senaru village at the 601m trailhead. It offers visitor information on Mount Rinjani and collects village and national park entrance fees.

Waterfall: Senaru’s best known attraction of Sendang Gila waterfall draws thousands of visitors annually. At about 600m above sea level, the waterfall is an easy 20- minute walk down a graded trail and steps from Senaru village. A pleasant alternative return route winds along the edge of the steep valley, following an irrigation canal. Trekking up from Sendang Gila will take you past Tiu Kelep waterfall.

Wildlife: During early morning and evening walks in Senaru you are likely to see interesting birds, butterflies, and at least one of two species of monkey which live in the surrounding Forest.
