As many regular readers of this blog may have noticed, I rarely produce any commemorative posts. That’s due to a combination of apathy and disorganization.
However, since this was in the backlog of reviews to post, Edgar Poe’s birthday is a good time to put it up.
This one would have escaped my notice except my wife is more current in keeping up with the Fortean Times subscription than I am, and she saw it in their reviews. I immediately ordered it and, across the Atlantic, came my copy, 200 of 500 as it turns out. However, at the time of this post, it’s still available at the link below.
Review: Mansion of Gloom: The Unsettling Legacy of Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher”, Antony Clayton, 2024.

This is an obsessive – but not exhaustive – look at Poe’s story and the works it inspired or that incorporated it. That’s not just literature but movies, tv, music, comics, games, and art. It is 651 pages long, and Clayton’s style is clear and jargon free.
I’ll say right up front that anybody interested in Poe’s work will probably want it.
