What are your response to the title when you first read it?Did your response change after you read the poem and study it further?
Not really understand what “art" the writer is going to talk about at first. But if you try to understand the writer’s feeling, you will know the “art’s" real meaning.
Mother Tongue
3. What is the family background of the author? How does she look at it? Does she feel proud of it or embarrassed about it?
Amy Tan is a second-generation Chinese immigrant in the United States. Obviously, Amy is an American-born Chinese who received American-style education. Therefore, there are significant differences in cultures and the use of languages between Amy and her mom. At the beginning, Amy felt embarrassed about her family background. But she changed her attitude last. The author herself believes that the language her mom has been using is very vivid, direct, and full of her own observation and imagination. She felt proud of it.
5. Any inspirations you get from reading the story? Many people don not have a good communicate and don’t have a heart-to -heart talk with their family. I haven’t listened attentively to my familys for a long time . I’m sure that there might be some generation gaps between us. Even our friend, we need to care more about listening. Try to understand other cultures before criticizing them.Culture shock can be a very important problem in this age. Also conversation is important between people and people.

Essay Question: The poem was read by Frankie to Maggie as she lay on bed. What is the theme of the poem and why did Frankie chose the poem to read? Kind of sorrow with some regrets. The poem express what Frankie wanted to tell Maggie. He thought that maybe it was the right time to tell her something that is in his mind.What is the significance of the poem to him and Maggie?It looks like a bid farewll poem(to say love you and goodbye). So sad…L many classmates cried during seeing the movie. Do you notice any transformation or change of the relationship between Frankie and Maggie? What is it? And what might contribute to the change?
From stranger to darling, they go through many competitions together. Love will come in time. Having been together for a long time, they came to have a tender feeling for each other.
Fall of Icarus
1.What do you see in the picture? Where is Icarus? What are the other figures in the picture? Why does the painter try to convey through the arrangement of the figures in the painting? Boat,ship, farmer,horse,castle,stone,…etc.Just beside the ship. Look! He sank into the sea. What a bad boy who didn’t listen to his father. Some seabirds, clouds,and maybe Icarus’s father is just behind the cloud. Everything in the picture expect the Icarus is quite calm and contented. It seems that no one care about the ‘Fall of Icarus’.4. What is the speaker’s tone? What is message that the speaker try to convey?Bewail the times and pity the people, sorrowful.The painter want to tell us that whatever you do or express,no one will care aobut you if you don’t look on th e bright side. The earth is still running.
a dreamy illusion and an empty bubble
Have a close reading on May 22, think and answer the following qustions with proper evidences (舉故事中的實例證明). We have no word limitations this time, but be sure to make your perceptions fully expressed.
1. Werther says “ That the life of man is but a dream is a thought which has occurred to many people, and I myself am constantly haunted by it” at the beginning of the letter written on May 22. What is he trying to tell us, we people everywhere? If Werther also see the life of man as a dream, does his dream of life have any difference from others’? [ Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.]
From the biginning of the letter till now, Werther wrote down something ordinary that he wanted to tell to himself. Just like
someday he met or knew someone,what scenery he saw yesterday."…enjoy in their company the pleasures still granted to human beings, exchange friendly joke…" Just like 『the man in the street』.
Life is but a dream, life is more but a stage. Come and go in haste. Maybe sometimes Werther is sentimentally attached to a
person or a place, but sometimes he didn’t have any feelings about anythings , even he didn’t care too much. I think maybe he felt paltry about himself or human beings. “When I see the limitations which imprison the active and speculative faculties of man…". Werther wants to live the life what is really in his soul. 🙂 me,too.
2. How does Werther think of children? Why does he think that the happiest people in the world are like chidren? [ Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.]
He thinks children are really ignorant and dull. Even"the learned teachers and instructors."
3. What kind of person does Werther think he is? What are the characteristics of the youngWerther you learn from the letter on May 22?
Like Joseph ! He can think more and more when he is talking to someone and often have few questions.
And I think he always melancholy and moody.
HW：the Divine Comedy
1.In Canto V of Inferno, those who are indulged in lust are sent to the second circle of hell, including Semiramis, Dido, Cleopatra, Helen, Achilles, Paris, Tristan, Francesca and Paolo. Choose ONE of the sinners lost in lust. Explain why Dante puts him/her into hell.
Paris was the prince of
Troy. He made a choice of giving the golden apple to Aphrodite, who was the goddess of beauty. He also triggers the Trojan War, by abducting Helen, Queen of Sparta. (The wife of Menelaus)
2.Why is Dante moved to tears after Francesca’s description of love and why does he finally fall “as a dead body falls” after her personal account of her intimate relationship with Paolo?
Francesca fell in love with Paolo’s brother ,Caina. Dante thought love is the only thing in his life so that he felt distressful. Dante also felt pity for Francesca & Paolo”s love. In the end, Dante decided to put them into the second circle of hell.
3. From Dante’s presentation of Francesca and Paolo, we are encouraged to consider the place of moral responsibility in depictions of love, sex, and violence in our own day. We can certainly discuss music, television, movies, and advertising (as well as literature) in these terms. Who is more (or less) responsible and therefore accountable for unacceptable attitudes and behavior in society: the creators and vehicles of such messages or the consumers and audiences?In my opinion, all of them are responsible for the society.
