Self-Inspiration: 10 tools to help you inspire yourself every day and live a life you love.

  1. images-3Create Positive Thoughts: Since you are already on your computer let’s use it for something good. To start, right before you got to bed, google a word that inspires positive feelings and spend about 5 – 10 minutes scrolling through the many images that resulted in your search. Let those be the final thoughts and images you have before you go to sleep. Allow the images to settle in your subconscious overnight and you will wake up feeling calmer and a little more positive. The results vary from person to person. When I first started I woke up the next day feeling optimistic and positive so I did the exercise the next day and so forth. It got to the point where my roommate asked me what I was doing, because a couple days before I was really low and then all of a sudden my attitude, words and behaviours were action oriented and positive. Here are a few good words to get you started; Positivity, Happiness, Self-love etc. (go ahead and use words that resonate with you)
  1. images-4Affirmations: If there is one exercise that I would say is an absolute MUST in this whole list, it would be the affirmations. Affirmations are a series of statements that are created to rewire the way that one speaks to themselves. This is the most challenging exercise because for some reason we only hear the negative comments of others believing them over the positive ones. We are our biggest critics so why can’t we be our biggest cheerleaders as well? Here are two sites that I use for my positive affirmations: healyourlife.com/dailyaffirmations & www.drstandley.com/guidance_happiness.shtml

“Today, I abandon my old habits and take up new, more positive ones.”

  1. imagesVisualize your future with a vision board: Feeling low? Daydream about the better life, really see it, what would your perfect life look like? Don’t worry about the problems only focus on the “What if”. In this exercise ANYTHING is possible. Grab a magazine and start tearing out pictures, quotes, articles that are a reflection of your perfect life and glue the images on a large piece of construction paper. You can have a Vision board for one specific vision or for all areas of your life, this is your life, you design it to be what you want. Be as accurate as possible, right down to the color of your favourite make and model of the car. I did this exercise before I started my own business and I put me working on a computer at home, surrounded by brand name logos and shopping bags, a year later I had started my own business and my office was in the one of the largest shopping malls in the city above the section where the high end stores were, coincidentally the same ones as on my vision board.** I know you computer savvy people will want to use Pinterest, go for it, but preferably print out the pictures you like and make a physical board. You want to put it in a place where you will see it every day. **
  1. Make friends with people that inspire you: There is always that one person at your parties or get togethers that seems to have what you want or their stories inspire you to try something new. Find those people and tell them that they inspired you and how. Chances are you have done the same for them. This exercise creates the circle of gratitude and the more you show gratitude more of it shows up in your life. You can do this exercise with an acquaintance too, after telling them they have inspired you, ask them out for a coffee and ask to hear their story.
  1. images-5Gratitude Log: Being grateful is extremely powerful, the more you show appreciation for something the more it shows up in your life. This is the easiest of all the steps but the hardest for people to adopt. For some reason our natural instinct is to complain about everything that has or is going wrong in our lives, to focus on what we do not have instead of what we do. Don’t wait for something big to happen in your life to find gratitude, start today. There is always ONE thing to be grateful for, it could be your favorite song playing on the radio at the right moment, your pet, something someone said to you. There was a gratitude movement this summer and it challenged people to post 5 things they were grateful for on Facebook for 30 days. I will make it easier, find a friend to do this exercise with and both of you must text, email or call each other daily the 5 things you are grateful for over a period of 2 weeks.
  1. 20150321_175427Go for a walk: Feeling stuck, lost or restless? Get up and go for a walk. It is best to go into a park or somewhere where there is lots of nature. Walking helps clear your head and gets your heart rate up, no matter what, you will feel better and ready to do what you need to do.
  2. imgres-1
  3. Create your “happy” playlist: Music is the cure for everything! To start go through your music library and create a playlist of all the songs that lift your spirits. It can be the words or the beat. Whatever you find helps change your mood. My playlist is called Courage and the first song I added was “Just Stand up” a collaboration of multiple female singers for the Just Stand up to Cancer Concert. There is no formula for this playlist, it has to come from within you, and the songs that you pick have to resonate and inspire you. Mine has songs in several languages, different messages, beats and styles. Some are just to get me dancing, which naturally changes my mood.
  4. Learn something new every day: Challenge yourself, keep your brain active and engaged. It is as simple as learning what your favorite flower is, a new fashion trend, watching the latest Youtube video, a new recipe, a hair do or a downloading a new app. Anything, because when you have that sense of accomplishment you feel better about yourself and that resonates in all aspects of your life.
  5. images-6Document your accomplishments: Celebrate what you have done instead of crying over the never ending to do list. This exercise can be as easy as getting out of bed an hour earlier than yesterday, picking the kids up from school. The idea behind this is to recognize what you are accomplishing and it will build your self-esteem, mood and energy to the point where you will naturally add the bigger things to the list. Also, it helps you realize how much you do get accomplished in a day vs what you need to get done tomorrow. Live in the moment and celebrate your successes.
  6. You time: Take 10 – 30 minutes a day to do one activity that you absolutely love, one activity that takes you into your own world and makes you smile. It can be reading a book, getting your nails done, a bubble bath or painting. Break away from everyone else and your day, to do a little “you time”, you will be surprised at how that re- energizes you and lifts your spirits.
  7. Develop something you love: – you can tie this in with your “you time”, or the “learn something new every day”, it is important to set goals and develop a new skill, a project you can look back on and feel that sense of accomplishment.

The point of this exercise is to learn how to lift yourself up, because we all know there are more than enough critics out there that think they know what is best for you. Remember, they are talking from their own experiences and limitations. The majority of these people are too afraid to live the life they want and are living the life they think they should be living out of fear of what others think. Ask yourself, is that what you want your life story to be? I know I don’t.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you liked all your clients and they were in sync with your core business values? In the beginning, many entrepreneurs carry into their new business the corporate mentality of taking on any and all clients for the money, who cares just get the business in. Due to that thought process many businesses fail and entrepreneurs falsely think they do not have the skills to be a successful businessperson. WRONG, if you want to run your own business and you do it right you will succeed.

“Love your business, love your clients, it IS possible to have both”

This is YOUR business, take the time to build a solid foundation and watch your dream turn into reality. The biggest step you took was deciding to start a business, why not wait a few more days and make sure you start off right?

Here are a couple of tips that will help you enjoy building the business of your dreams.

  1. Attracting clients you want and that resonate with you. We all have experienced the nightmare client and know that even the perfect clients are difficult sometimes.

The most important part of your business besides having a clear Vision and Mission is knowing who you want to work with. By completing this exercise you will gain the confidence to turn away the undesirable clients and be free to focus your energy on the ideal clients providing a positive foundation for your dream business. Take a piece of paper and create 3 columns with the following titles:

Column 1– Ideal client list all of the characteristics of your perfect client. Right down to their attitude towards change, payment schedules etc. Here are some examples from my list; SME, who understood the benefits of marketing, open to out of the box marketing, paid their invoices on time. Looking to have a long-term relationship with a marketing company, fun and forward thinking.

Column 2 – The acceptable client. List all of the traits of the client that is not perfect but you would enjoy working with.   Here are some examples; had the disposable income to outsource, short-term contract, understood the social media platform, paid the bills on time.

Column 3 – The absolutely not client. To me this is actually the most important list of all of the three. This is the client that you under no circumstances want to have. By writing this down it helps you clarify what kind of business you want and will help you identify these clients right away. Examples: They ask for a discount on your services, have an “I can do it, so why am I paying you” attitude, don’t pay on time, constantly are looking for a cheaper way to do things, do not listen to your input, have a difficult partner etc.

You should get as detailed as you like, include location, type of business and anything that will help you identify the right or wrong customer right away. This list will be in progress for a while so don’t feel pressured to have it perfect the first time.

  1. Interview your client. When starting out, many entrepreneurs are desperate for clients and want to take on everyone and anyone who is willing to work with them. That is great, if you want to end up tired frustrated and burnt out in your first year. Make sure to have these three things in order before letting the world know you are “open for business”
    1. Have a clear picture of your ideal client
    2. Know your expertise and the value you can add to potential clients
    3. Know what direction you want to take your business

If they meet the ideal client lists and their business is in line with where you see your business going AND you see the value you can add to their business then congratulations, you are one step closer to having the business of your dreams.

  1. Saying “No” to Business. I know many of you reading this just cringed a little when they read the heading. What I am about to tell you is fundamental to your happiness in your business.

If a potential client comes to you with a project that they want you to work on and it is not the type of client or the type of project you do not want for your business, say no. Yes you heard me, say no. What you are building is your company, your decisions, and your dream. Many

start-up entrepreneurs run into the desperate cycle of thinking they need to accept any and all projects and burn out within the first year.

Take the time and wait for the right projects and the right clients, the money will come and so will the clients. Once people see your value and what you are good at they will come to you.

  1. Create your own “influencers” circle. Go out and network with experts in the industry, tell them you are new to the game and would love their advice, feedback and support. Once you develop those relationships and they trust you they will be great allies for you.

images

  1. Brag about your client’s accomplishments on your businesses’ social media platforms. This is key to building your brand, many people get caught up building and promoting their clients accomplishments. Use your business platforms as a marketing tool for your clients and vice versa. Affiliate your brand with its success and eventually it will be one and the same.

These are a few tricks that I use and I love all of the clients and projects I have taken on, I have said yes to some unique projects because the client was my ideal client and it was the ideal business relationship.   Good luck in your business and make every business day count!

20150304_214851

From the outside, Cazador looks like any other trendy and hip family restaurant. The exterior is painted dark grey, and in scriptured silver lettering, the name Cazador is written above the entrance.  It is only once you are inside that can you truly appreciate the essence of this family run restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand. For those of you that do not know the meaning of the Spanish word Cazador – it is hunter.  Now you can only imagine what the décor looks like.

At first I was taken aback, but after my first glass of wine and great conversation, the coziness of the restaurant set in. I felt like a guest in someone’s home.  Instead of the typical scenic paintings you would see at most restaurants, the décor is a collection of memorabilia from the owners hunting excursions.

The centerpiece and first mounted trophy was a male deer, I believe. Located in the center of the room, one cannot help but admire it.  The deer is literally looking over the lucky patrons who are eating beneath him, not in an intrusive way, but like a friendly visitor overlooking the scene.  I have posted the picture to show you, but enough about the décor, let’s talk about the food!

We ordered the Babaganoush to start, served with pita bread on the side.  We paired it with a bottle of wine, a Pinot by the name of Urlar, from the region of Gladstone, made from organic grapes.  Next came the Hare Rillets, served with crackers, horseradish and beetroot, an absolutely delicious must have.

When looking at the menu, I have to admit, I did not know what many of the descriptions meant.  So I chose the main that sounded the most appealing to me, the sautéed Rabbit Offal, with Lentils, Cumin & Cress.  Sounds delicious, right? Feeling proud of myself, I patiently waited for my turn to order. When the waitress asked me what I wanted, I confidently said, “I will have the Rabbit Offal”.  Doing her job she casually repeated my order and lucky for me, confirmed the contents of my order. “So you will be having the liver, heart and kidney, correct?”  At that moment, I think time actually stopped and I could feel the blood drain out of my body.  After what seemed like forever, my cousins laughter pierced my foggy state. As I turned towards him, my sister-in-law had a sympathetic look on her face and was scanning the menu in a hurry.  I could tell she was amused but being the soft hearted person that she is, she chose to save me instead of mocking me in that moment, although, the laughter still came later!  She quickly offered up the Game Terrain with Pickles, Chutney and Toast, which was better suited to my palate.  I was grateful and switched my order.  Needless to say, I was a bit unsure of my final order and kept wondering what I had gotten myself into.

When the food arrived, I completely relaxed, even let out a sigh of relief. The dish looked amazing. Suddenly we were back in the cozy welcoming home of the Cazador family.

First came the Venison with Smoked Aubergine, Roasted Pepper and Pine Nuts. Sounds divine, doesn’t it?  It looked even better, hands down the best presented dish on the menu. Half of the plate boasted an orange curry spread with yogurt next to it, along side the pine nuts in a green colored sauce.  On the other half was the Venison, with the roasted peppers strategically placed in the middle of the plate.   Green lettuce lightly covered the entire dish. The explosion of color truly brought this eye-pleasing dish to life.

Then came the Braised Pheasant and Prawns with Romesco, Wilted Greens and Lime. Picture a bright orange sauce with green bok choy, in an all too simple presentation, served with a wedge of lime.  In my opinion, a yellow lemon would have brightened up the dish, but the lime was definitely the correct opposing flavor to the curry.

Next was the Chargrilled Boar Worth Endive, Blood Orange and Walnuts.  The presentation was nice. The meat was placed on top of a salad, blood red and regular oranges with the green salad on the side with a spice that looked similar to paprika lightly sprinkled on top. The pink of the meat enhanced the presentation of the dish. While I did not try this dish, my friend commented that the oranges added to the flavor of the meat.

Last but not least, came my dish. Keep in mind that I ordered the Game Terrain with Pickles, Chutney and Toast.  It was the blandest presented meal of the night, but looked exactly as one would expect.  The dish consisted of a piece of bread, with two pieces of triangular shaped game on top, a chutney with two tiny pickles in the centre and a small salad with a lemon dressing.  It tasted like a pate, with the chutney adding a sweetness to the dish. The lemon flavors from the salad were quite refreshing. My suggestion here would be to add some red or orange food items to improve the presentation.

Visiting Cazador was a great experience.   The place is cozy with its three rooms and forest like patio.  The service was excellent. The food is as unique as the décor.  An adventurous outing to remember, I would suggest it to anyone who is game.

Ortolano Review

My first true foodie experience in Auckland.  I am from Toronto, Canada and heard Auckland is a foodie city ~ this was an amazing start to what I hope will be a long and rewarding foodie adventure.

Ortolano ~ 31 Tyler St.  Auckland, NZ

I am new to Auckland so when a friend invited me to lunch at Britomart, I was excited to be experiencing this new city/country. Arriving a bit early and curious to check out the chic plaza, I walked past Ortolano and was drawn to it from a far. It has a wood and glass exterior with black wire chairs giving the place a casual and welcoming feel. The interior is bright and there is a cushion couch on the right of the restaurant with light oak tables and chairs that gave it a homey feel.

Seated on one of the corner cushion couches, I was excited to learn that I could get free WiFi. For someone who is accustomed to getting it free at most of the places back home this felt like a luxury. (WiFi is not free in 90% of the places here, not even Starbucks). I know, the shock worn off, can i get back to my review? Thanks.

I was already in heaven and I had yet to sample the food!  Happily surfing the net I was in great spirits when my friend arrived, i was tempted to order a drink but decided to wait for him.  We started with a drink of bubbly the ‘Château du Breuil Cavazos’, and asked the waiter for his food recommendations, he asked us a few questions and proceeded to list some options. The service and his knowledge of the menu was impressive.

For our starter we had the Crayfish ravioli, with preserved lemon and garden herbs. It was so delicious one could not get enough, I found myself savouring each bite,  I was so lost in the flavours and forgot to take a picture. The waiter had suggested we order the larger portion of it and I wish I had. That is until our next dish arrived, I did not think our dining experience could get better but it did. Next, we had the Chicken with lemon and Kale salad. Absolutely incredible! The combination of lemon with Chicken and Kale left a refreshingly delicious after taste in my mouth. They had plum tomatoes with caramelized seeds on top (YUM), with potato patties on the bottom, I will admit I ate more than my share of the tomatoes.  We were sharing each dish so we decided to have a third entrée, to be fair I wanted more. At this point we trusted the waiter to just bring us whatever he thought we should try. He did not disappoint, he served us the Rare beef, green tomato, gazpacho Blanco. I did not want to share, the meat was cooked to perfection(at least for me, it was brown on the outside and slightly pink on the inside) so tender it melted in your mouth.

In case I did not mention the presentation was excellent for every dish, I still cannot believe I did not take pictures!! Oh well a reason to go back. This was a fantastic way to kick off my Foodie experience in Auckland and if the cuisine is anything like this, I look forward to eating out much more.

From one Foodie to another this is a MUST visit.

Your flight ticket is not valid

These are not the words any traveler wants to hear a week before their departure. Let alone someone who has packed up their whole life, said goodbye to their family and friends put their contracts on hold and quit their job.

You can only imagine the waves of emotions I felt when the Qantas customer service representative nonchalantly told me the horrible news. There had been changes to my flight itinerary, which rendered my current ticket invalid. After a brief yet impactful freak-out, the sweet customer service representative explained to me that the only way I can obtain my “new” ticket was if the booking agent called the airline directly to reissue my ticket. No problem I thought, they have an 1800 number, and this should be a piece of cake. Little did I know that this was when my nightmare was truly about to begin.

I looked up the phone number for FlightHub and proceeded to call the 1800 number displayed on their website. The first time I dialed in, I listened intently to the options and chose option 2 for English, then option 2 for International travel, then 5 for outside North America and 6 for a customer service rep, as soon as I pressed 6 the line went dead and disconnected the call.   No problem I thought I would just call back, so I did, went through the entire all of the options again only to be disconnected after pressing 6 once again. So I tried it again and again, after the 5th attempt someone finally answered. I asked him to take my phone number in case we got cut off and it happened again, and guess what it did, in the midst of me talking to him the phone disconnected, I actually let out a little laugh of disbelief.

Refusing to accept defeat I called them again, and I got another phone operator, now concerned as both the men that answered the phone had thick foreign accents, I started to question the validity of this company. I tried to quickly explain to the operator that the line kept disconnecting and I wanted to talk to a manager, what happened next blew me away- he hung up the phone! Actually hung up the phone, I was dumbfounded in the last 2 hours I finally was speaking to someone and he hung up. I was not sure whether to laugh or cry in that moment, I just know I could not give up.

At this point I was starting to worry so I looked up FlightHub on the Internet, and that’s when then the panic completely set in.  There was link after link of complaints and posts of people claiming to be scammed by this company.  I was worried that my New Zealand adventure was coming to a very quick end.

So I did what anyone with a twitter account would do I took to twitter and started to tweet about my experience. Almost immediately travel weekly started to follow and interestingly enough FlightHub responded.   I was promised that a manager would call me in the next hour. This was now 4 hours after the Qantas rep gave me the bad news, I had a full day of appointments scheduled but fearful that I would miss the callback and my window for a newly issued ticket I cancelled everything and waited anxiously by the phone. I even took the phone into the bathroom when I showered and angled it in a way I could hear it and see it if it rang.

Finally a few hours later, the phone call came. On the other line was a nice gentleman named Oliver, he apologized for all the confusion and assured me that FlightHub was in fact a valid and reputable company and immediately gave me an email address in case I needed to get a hold of him.  I recounted my earlier experience and because he was so nice decided not to challenge him when he said they could not look into my concerns based on my phone number. You see, when I was project manager at ACS our call center and our affiliate call centers could track calls based on the phone number and approximate time you called.  Realizing that I needed him on my side and not on the defensive I bit my tongue. For those of you that know me well know how hard that was.

After some friendly conversation and some laughs, I learned that his name was actually Olivier and he was originally from France. We talked about international travel, his impressions of Canada, mainly Montreal and even spoke a little French.   Olivier did a great job of getting my mind off being upset and creating a positive impression of FlightHub. With promises of calling me back the next morning with my confirmed flight details, after an hour in a half we ended our call.

Needless to say I did not get a call the next day I waited a couple days and sent an email to follow up. After a few games of phone tag, yes I am aware it was most likely my fault, we finally connected. This was the day before I was to leave, yes less than 24 hours before I was leaving I still did not know if I was getting on a plane the next day.  Wait it gets better….  Olivier had bad news for me my revised ticket was still not issued. Before I could freak out he promised to have it issued and ready to go for the next morning.  At this point what could I do, I had no choice but to trust that he was going to take care if it.  And he did, I ended up with a better return flight home and a potential extension of a couple days.

They say that it is the things that go wrong on your vacations/trips that make the experience all the more memorable.  Thank you but no thank you, this was an adventure I would have happily done without.    BUT I will say I was impressed at the follow up of FlightHubs customer sevice once I got their attention.   My advice to them is improve your phone systems and give Olivier a great reward because it was thanks to him I have positive feelings towards your organization.

And on that note… my adventure has just begun.    Stay tuned for my next post cause my pre- departure and my in – flight experience was almost as memorable as my pre- departure.

Thanks for reading my ThoughtzExactly!

See you soon! 🙂
