The Backyard Owl Journals

Little Surprises 2025

Once upon a time a girl and a boy hung an owl box on the trunk of a dead ash tree in their backyard. Would it be used? Would it be the owls? Looking out of the window they waited and watched to see what nature would bring them. Five years later they continue waiting and watching to see if this year will bring wonders as in the past.

The Fourth Year 2024 The Owls are Here!

Catch up on Year 1 ,  Year 2 , Year 3 to see how it all began.

Fall had arrived and I was creating new gardens under the nest box tree. If the owls were there, they were not peeking out. Bluebirds, Blue Jays and squirrels peeked inside. No sign of owls. My fingers were crossed.

“The wild hawk stood with the down on his beak and stared with his foot on the prey.”
– Lord Alfred Tennyson

The Magic Night Sky

“Those are the same stars, and that is the same moon, that look down upon your brothers and sisters, and which they see as they look up to them, though they are ever so far away from us, and each other.”

Vultures, Ravens, and Bald Eagles – Oh my!

“I hope I can be the autumn leaf, who looked at the sky and lived. And when it was time to leave, gracefully it knew life was a gift.” -Dodinsky

Looking out nature’s window has shown me that life, even at its end can be a gift. That is the subject of this read.
