Sachs Covered Bridge, Pennsylvania

In June 2025 I visited family in Pennsylvania and enjoyed seeing Sachs Covered Bridge near Gettysburg National Park. It was built in 1854 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
At one point Pennsylvania had over 1500 covered bridges, but that number has now dwindled to about 200. Even so, Pennsylvania still has more covered bridges than any other state!
The bridges were covered to protect the wooden beam latticework trusses inside that provided safety and stability for the bridge. Bridges were often painted red because that color was readily available and was made from only three ingredients – skimmed milk, lime, and rust (iron oxide). They were often named for local towns, mills, farmers, or builders. I think covered bridges are fascinating and incredibly scenic!
