I recently finished reading The Dad Rock That Made Me a Woman, a memoir in essays by Niko Stratis. A good book, particularly if you are someone who thinks about recorded music/popular music a lot. The author gave an interview with Xtra magazine about the book on its release last year. I have been thinking about this excerpt from that interview, in which she’s responding to a question on masculinity:
Jan 19, 2026 06:19 PMMen don’t have to think about community a lot, right? Because every community they feel belongs to them. And I think that is a damaging thing. Men need to start to consider the spaces that they’re in a lot more and be thinking, “Whose community is this and how do I honour that; how do I help preserve it; how do I help look after it in a way that doesn’t centre me?”
Winston has written a little on what life looks like in the Twin Cities right now:
Right now the Federal Government is the disaster, and ICE are the chaos agents, and my community is a beautiful defensive force that will not be defeated.
I’ve also been reading the testimonies from Stand With Minnesota, on the ground personal eyewitness accounts of the occupation and resistance.
If you are inclined to give, Stand With Minnesota links to various funds and mutual aid efforts right now. If you are inclined to action, contact your member of Congress.
I want to be ready if and when my own neighborhood is next. Start finding or building those networks now. Whistle up.
