What to expect from Nikon in 2026

Here is an updated list of what to expect from Nikon in 2026 (see previous reports):

  • Nikon Z9II: the only high-end Nikon camera release for 2026 (expected after March 20206).
  • Nikon Z30II or similar expected in Spring/Summer: the Z30 camera is up for replacement – it was announced in June 2022. There were some unconfirmed reports that this could be a mini-Nikon ZR model, but at that point, I cannot confirm that. The most likely scenario is that Nikon will add some RED functionality but still call the model Z30II. The RED Komodo features a Super 35mm sensor, commonly regarded as an APS-C equivalent (it’s slightly larger than a typical APS-C sensor). Will Nikon release a new camera with a Super 35mm sensor? I seriously doubt that – I thinkt hey will keep that line under the RED brand.
  • New Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 II lens rumored to be announced in the next 2-3 months (similar to the 24-70mm f/2.8 S II)
  • New/cheaper 14-24mm or 14mm or similar wide-angle lens as a companion to the new 24-105mm  – to be paired with the Z5II (not a replacement for the Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S lens)
  • Nikkor Z 100-300mm or 120-300mm f/2.8 lens: expected later.
  • Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.4 (to match/complete the 35mm/50mm f/1.4 lenses): expected later.
  • More Nikkor Z cinema lenses – this has been reported for months (first teaser?).
  • Many Nikon ZR firmware updates – the next update is rumored to include some sort of new recording mode that will enhance the video quality, but the cost is decreased autofocus performance. A week ago, we got a new lens instead of a new ZR firmware update – this was a misunderstanding.
  • In conclusion, in 2026, I expect Nikon to focus more on video-oriented products (Nikon+RED), including lenses, cameras, firmware, and software.
