THE CURIOUS WORLD
OF KITCHEN SCIENCE
THE BIOLOGY OF BANANAS

“Explore the key principles and practice of everyday science by using analogies, experiments and research with food and drink in the home kitchen environment.”

Paperback 120 pages

Nonfiction science book for kids ages 12+

My review: This would be suitable for readers starting around 10 years old. There is a variety of information and experiments to keep one interested. Color illustrations help teach the text. A good resource for home school science. The book has four chapters: Plants, Food, You, and The World. There is an answer key at the back of the book. This is one of four in The Curious World of Kitchen Science series of nonfiction books. I have only read this title so can’t speak for the others. I would recommend The Biology of Bananas for kids and adults that enjoy science.

My review: I found this to be suited for readers transitioning from picture books to chapter books. More so directed at kindergarden to 2nd grade. It was cute but nothing over the top.

Easy to bring with you workbook for some on-the-go math activities. (ideally those 7-12 years old)  The activity book contains a variety of math games ranging from easy to more difficult. Play alone or with a friend. Colorful illustrations. Sturdy backboard and large size make this activity book user friendly.

A gorgeous, inspiring celebration of books that encourages you to read whatever, however, and wherever YOU choose.

Hardcover picture book. Kane Miller. 32 pages.

The rhyming text and interesting illustrations make this a terrific book for kids ages 3-8. Positive vibes toward reading! Kids (and adults) can identify with their own book reading styles.  Lots of discussion opportunities. A heartwarming book I recommend this autumn season.

“This guided journal for kids offers a year’s worth of quick and easy questions that inspire them to write a little bit about themselves every day.”

paperback, 144 pages

Great workbook for creativity and imagination in the classroom. The writing prompts are positive and varied. A very simple format that can be used a variety of ways. Empty date boxes let you move along at your own pace and at your question of choice. There are three questions per page and three lines for writing. A little color keeps the page clean and not distracting. The student can read the grade appropriate questions themselves. A good resource for creative writing. (and handwriting practice)

Picture-Perfect STEM is a powerful tool for guiding instruction. You’ll love how effective this book is, and your students will love learning about STEM.”

345 pages Grade 3-5, (254 pages Kindergarten, 265 pages Grade 1) softcover

These are books to help elementary teachers integrate science and literature.

The lessons include fiction and nonfiction book pairs, background reading, materials lists, student pages, and assessments for each lesson. Also includes the connections to science standards and the Common Core State Standards for both English language arts and mathematics.

Picture-Perfect STEM Lessons Grade 3-5 is a large book that starts with a lot of instructional research type material that I didn’t find of any value to me. Following that are the lessons (there are 10-15 depending on the book grade level) that use the 5E model (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate). The lessons use featured picture books and additional materials that need to be referenced or purchased elsewhere.

The book is designed to be used within a curriculum. The lessons aren’t sequential and they are adaptable so you can use them to fit your teaching style and student needs very easily. I like that.

Picture-Perfect STEM Lessons Kindergarten, Picture-Perfect STEM Lessons Grade 1, and Picture-Perfect STEM Lessons Grade 3-5 all follow the same format.

Bottom line: I think these books are on the pricey side for what I can gleam from them. The part of the book that actually had the lessons was good. Not for you if you are watching your budget or if you want a stand alone curriculum.

The Ultimate Illustrated Nutrition Book for Beginners

Paperback, 108 pages

This is a book that’s packed with lots of important information about eating healthy. The author takes the bulk of nutrition information and organizes it into retainable sections. While the doodles are very simple, they have a lot of character! And importance, as they are a clever way to aid learning. Equal parts text and doodle prompts, I found this book to be a fun source of information for adults and high school students. I highly recommend.

{My only comment I feel compelled to mention would be about artificial sweeteners. My opinion is that anything artificial (sweeteners, colors, preservatives) is bad regardless of the amount. Don’t buy foods with it in, and then they will stop making it}
