Best Friends

My best friends are scattered all over the world and this week, when I saw this postcard on Postsecret I couldn't help thinking what if one of them sent this in thinking of me?

But more than that, I wish they had seen this and know that I am thinking of them. Always.

A new chapter to tread

The old year passes, a new one's ahead..
A chapter closes, a new one to tread..
The burdens you carry, leave it all behind..
It's time to be merry and start a fresh mind.
May the new year bring a new resolute,
and bring forward your dreams to much greater heights.
Be blessed in everything you execute and have many great days and nights :)

-Quoted from a friend's New Year's sms
(suddenly felt it was so apt at the dawn of graduation)

Articles from Jan-Apr 2009

Keeping track of my work and storing it online is a good way for me to look back on all the sleepless nights, smiles and tears. In the months of January to April 2009, I wrote about Sheila on 7 (dream come true) and Rihanna (inspired by Wai Yee), which are both blogged in individual posts because they were truly special. Here is the rest of the work I did in those months, they are by no means less extraordinary and had an equal amount of effort poured in.

A press conference held at my favourite tea place - Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf :) I had quite a relaxing time chilling at one corner and scribbling down my notes for this article while enjoying the complimentary coffee and good music.

The first indie music awards in Malaysia. I thought it would be huge. And it was, for the people who haven't been honoured all these years, they finally got material recognition. Overall, it was more like a clubbing event than an awards show to me. Acceptance speeches may be boring at times but still very much necessary. I was hunting down musicians to interview left and right and met a few I wasn't aware of. It just amazes me how much passion they have in putting out music even if there may not be listeners.

I still remember when they announced the headliners for Sunburst. There was a very short awkward silence and then a roar of claps. Maybe everyone was expecting much more than just N.E.R.D. There was so much fiasco surrounding this concert, I was totally fascinated by the drama. The world of entertainment is always a big hullabaloo indeed.
Reggae music along with trance music is the furthest kind of music you would expect to see on my favourite songs playlist. To review a reggae band just goes to show I learn many things on the job and this is partly why journalism continuously excites me. I never know what to expect and what I'm going to cover next.

Finally!! An article for dance, to help promote dance! I realised after writing the reggae piece that I was mostly writing about music and bands when my heart longs to cover theatre and dance as well. This piece put a smile back on my face and a grin in my heart. I also tried out my photography skills on this concert. So fulfilling, thanks to Vino and Kok Hao who gave me tips the first night :)

Writing an article based solely on a press release, research and no interview. Haven't written one of those in awhile. All's well since I have been following news on Kelly Clarkson on and off, how could I not? She is the first ever American Idol after all.

Oh my. This article nearly gave me a heart attack. I had to put a different spin on it at the very last minute and thankfully it worked out.

Initially, I thought I wouldn't be able to cover this. What a waste it would have been if I had declined to cover it! Thanks to Carmen who provided transport and great company, we braved through the pouring rain and the muddy field to a night of awesome partying and delicious Kajang satay :) That's where I discovered Naturally 7 and experienced how good they are live. Those youtube videos can't do the real thing justice!

Music events always seem to happen at a smoky club. This one is different and extra exciting because of KLDC's (Drumline) and Floor Fever's presence! Strong drum beats plus dance, simply exhilarating. Definitely not the usual music fare. DJ Shortee Blitz has the stamina to party to 4am but I crashed about 2.30am :D

Pillow fight!! Awesome awesome time watching people pummeling each other out. You wouldn't think pillow fighting is a competitive sport until you witness one of this magnitude. Patricia and JC had fun plowing through the masses (the pillows and people) while I stood at the sidelines trying in vain to get a good shot. Met a couple of Couchsurfers here which was pretty cool.

Honestly, the only New Year resolutions I have made are all related to religion. I have never thought to take stock and check up on my progress though so this article caught me by surprise. Always interesting hearing other people's resolutions and how far they've come in keeping to it. I'm a sucker for stories :)

Karaoke

Tonight was great.

We went to watch a movie. And not just any movie. It was a local film that Bobo and Yang Yang were involved in! SO ECSTATIC! For the first time ever, I actually could look at the credits, point and say "Hey, there's your name!!"

Last year, I heard the stories of what they were working on while the movie was in production. Bobo did casting, location recce and had a tough 8 days shoot in the 'jungle' while Yang slaved over editing karaoke videos which turned out to be prominent in the film woohoo!

Almost a year later and I get to witness their labour come to life on screen. Peppered by their comments filled with behind the scenes knowledge, it made the movie resonate more with me than it would have if I were a normal audience.

You both. I'm honoured to be able to watch the movie together with you both and watch your names flash by on the big screen. CONGRATULATIONS! ^_^
