Activity 4: A Cocinar!

Description:

Lately we have been working with vocabulary about food and verbs regarding cooking. To practice all this, students and parents as a team are to create a recipe collage with instructions, called “Mi Receta” (My recipe). To do so we are going to use the camera, then we are going to transfer the pictures to the laptop and create the collage using PicCollage (we learned how to use this last year).

Steps:

  • Think of a recipe you want to use for the activity.
  • Plan when and how to cook it.
  • Take pictures of both, student cooking and parent cooking.
  • Transfer the pictures to the computer
  • Use PicCollage to organize the pictures chronologically and write the description in Spanish- use your notes in the notebook or head to the website (wordreference: English-Spanish)
  • We will be displaying your works in the classroom.

Photopeach

PhotoPeach is an online web tool which produces slideshows. Slideshows can be created with photographs or images.

With the use of the digital camera and the images captured students can create a digital story or a picture dictionary or explore other skills.

photopeachStudents could also have fun with images by capturing meaningful moments of their learning. The use of the camera is important to be able to use this software and the Camera section explains explicitly the learning outcomes and curriculum connections.

PhotoPeach is not only for students though. Educators could upload images or photographs to a PhotoPeach slideshow and use the interactive quiz creator to help students learn the content. Slideshows could also be created to highlight school events, such as concerts, plays, or dances.

Safety on the net

Parents, educators, friends… we have all heard about the dangers of exposing ourselves on the internet and the consequences this might bring. This brings us to being more precocious of what pages we visit, what we write or download.

Sometimes we assume that students and children will think the same way and acknowledge the dangers exploring the internet carries, but it’s not always like that.

Make sure you talk to your children and advise them of the dangers of sharing too much on the internet.

Check the website below for more information:

Create an animation in Muvizu about a normal Sunday in your family.

Steps:

  • Ask your parents to help you with this exercise.
  • Write about your routines of a Sunday in English, and then rewrite it in Spanish
    • Remember! Literal translation doesn’t work. Think about what we have learned in the classroom.
  • Think of the images you would like to associate with the text.
  • We have already explored Muvizu, explain your parent how it works and together create the images, and add audio by recording the Spanish sentences you have prepared earlier.
  • Very important, enjoy and have fun!
  • Share your work in the classroom

  • Print those pictures and together create a collage that will represent your house.
  • With what you have learned in the classroom and the use of internet describe your house in Spanish.
  • Ask your parent to record a video of you presenting your collage in Spanish.
  • When you finish your presentation bring it to the classroom so we can all share it.

Happy creating!

Laptop

In the classroom we will be exploring the use of laptops. Although, there are many other devices which are smaller and more comfortable, laptops are still the Kings of technology where most of the technological software can be used.Sometimes laptops may present opportunities for distraction however, utilizing portable computers in classrooms can yield several significant benefits.

Computer Skills

Computer skills are becoming a fundamental part of education. Students that learn to use basic computer functions such as word processing, email and web browsing have a significant advantage over students that have no knowledge of computers.

Not only that, students can acquire cognitive functions by conducting research, connecting with students all over the world, learning new languages or using different kind of software

Fun

Having fun is important when learning. It is more likely that students learn something when they are having fun than sitting at a desk just listening. Besides, the new generations are used to multitasking and using the laptop while learning is a great challenge they are happy to take.

School Work

In our classroom we will be using our computer for many different things:

  1. Do research: Learning Spanish is not only about the language, but also the culture. The use of the laptop combined with the internet provides students with loads of information not only textual, but visual as well that will help them better understand the second language and its culture
  2. Explore new software: Many application can be explored using Ipads or phones, but there are some software that can only be used with a laptop. In the school year we will be exploring Muvizu to create presentations using animations and our voices.
  3. Create work: Students will be using the laptop to create work throughout the school year, this way we can save the environment by using less paper.

Genius Hour

What is Genius Hour?

The purpose of Genius hour in our classroom is to let students explore their passions and create projects that will enable them to learn by problem solving.

Students will have to learn new skills to conduct their project and they will be learning a lot in the process.

We will be sharing their work in this website.
