Goals for 2025

Although January is almost over and I am so busy finishing the story for Terras Altas, I would still like to share my goals for 2025 with you.

First of all I would like to conclude Terras Altas – Bloedrood. I’m now in the final stages of writing the rough draft and my lead proofreader has already started reading the first chapters. I will incorporate his comments during the first rounds of rewriting. We will also remove as many errors as possible from the manuscript before it goes to the other proofreaders and the publisher. While the proofreaders are working on the manuscript, I will design the book cover.
The aim is to ensure that Bloedrood is available in the first half of this year.

When Bloedrood is at the printer, I want to start writing a new adventure. To be honest, I’ve already start working on this, but I have put it aside for now to fully concentrate on the last part of the Terras Altas series. But it will be another steampunk story!

Besides writing and my books, I have also set a number of personal goals. For example, I want to exercise at least 4 times a week for my health and schedule time for myself every week to relax and recover. I would like to spend time with family and friends, with some of them more often than I do now. I also want to visit a Formula 1 race again this year and I want to go somewhere I have not been before. I love traveling and want to see and experience as much as possible.

Those are the most important goals I have for 2025. What are yours?

Lots of Love,
Just Patty

Ten years of authorship

In April 2014, my first book, Drägan Duma – Zij Die Hoort, was published by Celtica Publishing in the Netherlands and Belgium and I could call myself a published author for the first time. And fortunately I still am, 10 years later! A lot has happened in those 10 years.

I:

  • am on my third laptop.
  • have signed books at more than 30 events.
  • daydreamed new stories for hours on end.
  • have written six more books and a collection of short stories.
  • was nominated for a Hebban Award and finished third.
  • had the opportunity to meet many dear readers and signed hundreds of books.
  • started delving into digital illustrations and designed four book covers.
  • took the plunge and had the English version of An Unbreakable Band translated and then self-published it.
  • thought that being an author consisted only of writing. I have now come back from that.
  • have learned a lot and I’m not done writing yet!

Ten years seems like a long time, but it really has flown by. I am still so very happy that Danny convinced me to look for a publishing house, because I really feel that I have found my dream job!

2014 became a year of many “first times”: My debut book, a book presentation, the first time that I was allowed to attend a fantasy event as a writer, signing books, waiting in fear for the first reviews, winning an award, taking pictures with readers…
I loved it, it was terrifying and most of the things I never saw coming…

If there is something I never thought about before Zij Die Hoort was published, it is how much time and effort goes into promoting a book. Of course the publisher will help you with this, but you will also have to put yourself on the map as a writer. When your debut book comes out, no one has heard of you yet. (besides family and friends of course 😉 )
So I really had to get to work! A website, social media pages and promotional materials had to be created. Moreover, I really enjoy giving a small gift with a book when it comes out. For example, a key ring, a magnet or a necklace.

Of course, you also have to maintain the website and socials. I have become so used to this that it has really become part of my daily life. It’s a really fun way to keep in touch with readers and easy to share information.

The first few times I signed books I turned red as soon as someone talked to me. Although I’m not really shy, I’m also not someone who naturally feels at home being the center of attention. I really had to get used to that! Especially because I have a mild anxiety disorder due to PTSD. After ten years you would think that I would have gotten used to that, but I still find it scary.

In the past 10 years I have also completed a trilogy for the first time. Jill and Skylar’s adventure came to an end with The Black Crystal and I was extremely nervous when that book came out. A trilogy is only as good as the last book. If readers don’t like that, the rest is immediately worth less. But luckily the book was well received!
Still, it turned out that I wasn’t quite done with Drägan Duma, even though I already had a large part of Pure White in my head. I debated for a while which book I should write first and ultimately chose An Unbreakable Band. After writing The Black Crystal, I was still so comfortable in the world of Drägan Duma that I wrote An Unbreakable Band and The Forgotten Stories after it. After that, an era of sorts came to an end.

With Terras Altas I wanted to create something completely new and I certainly succeeded! I have studied Steampunk and the workings of steam engines. Another first time: I never had to do any research for Drägan Duma. I have to do that for Terras Altas and I enjoy doing it too!
I was also super nervous when Puur Wit was released. It was completely different from Drägan Duma and although I didn’t want to be a “1 trick pony”, the fear was there.
I can now say that this pony can do at least 2 tricks, because Terras Altas also gets such wonderful reviews that it sometimes makes me shy.

I am now working on writing the last part in the Terras Altas series, although it is still a bit slow. The past three years have been very difficult privately, especially because I lost my parents. Both were very proud and loved that I was an author. It’s hard to accept that they will never read anything I write next.
Furthermore, I have been very ill and am still recovering.

This awesome adventure of mine is still going on and I have to be honest, a big part of it I owe to you guys. My friends and followers on WordPress. Because before I started blogging here, I had never shared my writing. But in this little corner on the internet, I hesitantly posted some poems. And I met some great people! Their love and support have really given me the courage to be an author.
So, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much.

All in all, the past decade was amazing and I can’t wait for the next. Keep an eye on my Socials for the next four weeks because 10 years of being an author should, of course, be celebrated!

Love,
Patty

Bye bye 2023, bring on 2024!

The past few years have been quite intense for me and this is evident from the fact that it has been no less than 3 years since I wrote an end-of-year/new-year blog.

2023 is a year where I tried to run away from 2021 and 2022. But no matter how fast you run, the past will catch you eventually. And how…
I have been quite ill for the last 3 months of 2023. Stress, exhaustion and a still unknown virus have floored me. Fortunately, I am recovering, but my reserves are completely exhausted. So, the first goal for 2024 is: get fit & healthy again!

Yet, I am also grateful to 2023 for the beautiful things it has brought me. For example, I am very happy with the people around me who are there for me even in bad times. And of course I am grateful for my readers who ensure that I can still do the work I love most! Thank you. ❤

I decided, very ambitiously, to self-publish the translation of Drägan Duma – Een Onbreekbare Band last year because I was a bit tired of begging foreign publishers for a chance. Caroline Mackie of LWD Translation & Editing Services translated the book and worked with me to try and keep the original tone as much as possible. I then started collecting information about “self-publishing” and the possibilities of marketing “An Unbreakable Bond”. I designed the cover myself to reduce costs and I am quite proud of it. Ultimately, I chose to release the book as a paperback and e-book through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other retailers. The book can also be read (for free) with Kindle Unlimited!

As a promotion, I had one of the short stories translated and it can still be read for free via Bookfunnel.

At the end of 2023, Celtica Publishing published the third book in my Terras Altas series: Ash Gray. Unfortunately, because I became ill during the final phase of the editing process, I was not able to really enjoy the release. For example, there was no book presentation. I’m disappointed about that, because Ash Gray is, for several reasons, the most difficult book I’ve ever written, so I would have liked to celebrate its release. Now I’ll have to celebrate the release of the last book in this series extra big 😉

My goals for 2024 are simple: as I said, I would like to get fit and healthy again as quickly as possible. I also want to spend more time on myself and go on holiday or weekend away more often. Just being able to breathe actually. As far as writing is concerned, I will do my utmost to write and hopefully publish “Bloedrood” this year!

I wish you all a wonderful 2024 in which many of your dreams may come true!

Love,

Patty ❤

Poetrics: Wrecked

It’s been a while since I’ve made a Poetrics, but Imagine Dragons is my favorite band and “Wrecked” really speaks to me after losing my parents last year, so I had to do something with this song.

(Poetrics is a combination of lyrics from some of my favorite songs and poetry I write inspired by these songs. I take the essence of the song, the meaning it has, and write a poem on that. Then I let the lyrics of the song dance through the poem.)

Note: The lyrics always stay the property of the band or artist who wrote them. All the credit goes to them.

My Poetry is written in Italic, the Lyrics are written Bold.

Wrecked – Imagine Dragons

***

Days pass by and my eyes stay dry, and I think that I’m okay

.

But I am not okay and I don’t know if I’ll ever be

Ever since Death took you away

I am lost and searching for you desperately

.

These days I’m becoming everything that I hate

Wishing you were around but now it’s too late

My mind is a place that I can’t escape your ghost

.

I really don’t want to go to sleep

Of all the things I lost, I miss you the most

My nightmares pull me in far too deep

Memories demolish me night after night

I just wish you were here to hold me tight

.

Sometimes I wish that I could wish it all away

One more rainy day without you

Sometimes I wish that I could see you one more day

One more rainy day

.

There will be nothing left of me after a while

Why couldn’t you just stay?

I put on a brave face, straighten my back and smile

But I am a wreck

.

Oh, I’m a wreck without you here

Yeah, I’m a wreck since you’ve been gone

.

I am trying to go on without you

Reaching for another dawn

But my nights are dark and my days are blue

.

They say that the time will heal it, the pain will go away

.

You are in everything I see and feel

Sometimes I swear you stand in the doorway

Tell me, why does your death feels so unreal?

It’s like I will never be whole again

.

Tell me, how am I supposed to move on?

.

How can I just go on living my life?

I pretend I’m okay, but feel like a con

Memories cut through me like a knife

I am a wreck without you

.

I’ve tried to put this all behind me

I think I was wrecked all along

.

Unshed tears are suffocating me

You always told me to be strong

But without you, it’s not that easy

I miss your smile, hugs and advice

Love always comes at a price

.

I’ll see you again, my loved one

Yeah, I’m a wreck

I’ll see you again, my loved one

To celebrate the fact that An Unbreakable Bond will be available in English from the first of July, I have made a e-book of a short story that takes place prior to the events in An Unbreakable Bond. You can download it for free, no strings attached! Just follow the link to the landing page on Bookfunnel, click on the big, blue button, fill out the form and get your copy! 🙂 (Note: we do not save your email address in any way.)

About Leap of Faith:

Leap of Faith is the first short story set inside the Drägan Duma universe and takes place before the novel An Unbreakable Bond.

About 340 years ago: the people of our world hunt dragons out of fear. Because the magic is fading, they are no longer able to communicate with each other. The dragon race is on the verge of extinction when one of the dragons accidentally finds a portal to another world. Could there be room there to live in peace?

It will take a lot of courage and leap of faith to find out…

Including 2 chapters of An Unbreakable Bond! (available in paperback and e-book summer 2023)

Happy reading and lots of Love,

Patty
