AniBloggers For Fireys

There has been an #AuthorsForFireys hashtag running on twitter for sometime now. I thought I’d start something similar for anibloggers.

The rules that I’m following (feel free to change them) are simple:

  1. Pick an episode of something that you wouldn’t normally review (see after the jump for the horror that I’ve chosen to inflict on myself).
  2. Give people a week to bid on getting the review emailed to them a week before you publish it. You can run the bids on the blog post, and/or on twitter.
  3. When the winner provides evidence of their donation to a suitable Australian Bushfires Charity, watch the show, write your rant review and email it to them.
  4. A week later, publish it on your blog for all to see.
  5. Rinse and repeat if desired.

And, now, drum roll please, the… thing that I’m offering to watch a full episode of is: Continue reading

I headed back to Japan in November to view the Autumn colours. I really enjoyed travelling with Inside Japan last year and enjoyed doing so again this year.

This trip included meetups with online friends in Japan, and some semi-self guided touring at the end. A summary of the trip is after the jump if you’re interested in catching up, and links will be added as the photos for each post are curated.  Continue reading

Rental Family (2025)

Rental Family directed by Hikari features a measured, controlled performance by Brendan Fraser, who is perhaps better known for more, ah, energetic roles.

Nevertheless, Fraser’s performance carries a lot of truth and weight in a solid film where that truth is, perhaps, somewhat ironic given the premise. There will be some spoilers ahead

How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom Volume 20 by Dojyomaru, with spoilers.

OK, so I posted about what I expected from Volume 20 a couple of days ago. So, what did I actually get?

In broad strokes I was pretty close: Volume 20 was, like the rest of the series, a light, breezy read, although structured more as a set of related short stories than as an actual novel per se.

The general trend of the world was peaceful, as expected, and yes there were more babies for Souma’s family. If not as many as I was predicting.

Naden’s one (and only thus far) daughter Rinoa was a member of the Sea Serpent race, like Excel Walter, and has more or less been adopted by Excel as her apprentice and successor.

On that note… I have questions. Naden did not, in previous volumes, like Excel at all, with “Sea Snake” being about the kindest thing she ever called Excel. Excel’s tendency to flirt with Souma certainly did not help with that.

The short story that deals with Rinoa (or Nowa-chan as she’s usually known) also introduces tabloids to the Realist Hero world, which is an… interesting choice on Dojyomaru’s part. 🙂

Aisha does get pregnant at the very end of the book, but that’s all we get to find out.

Whilst Juno does marry Souma, she doesn’t become a secondary queen, and lives away from the palace. This is something that Liscia basically organises to maximise the happiness of all involved.

It had been clear for a while now but this volume is very explicit that whilst Souma may rule the kingdom, Liscia rules the family (and Souma is happy for her to do so).

Souma himself abdicates in favour of Cian quite early (when the prince is 15 I think), and retires away from the Castle to get out of the way. I get the distinct impression from Cian’s view point scenes that he would be planning on doing so himself as soon as he has a reliable heir to let him get away with it.

There were some surprises in this book, but I’ll try to avoid spoiling any more of them. Overall, this is a fun read very much in a “where are they now” kind of style, with the previous volume (19) being the real end to the main plot of the series.

If you liked what came before, you’ll enjoy this. 🙂

How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom by Dojyomaru, Expectations for Volume 20 with anticipated spoilers.

So…I’ve come down with some sort of lurgy after Christmas (not one of the big 3, I did a strongly negative test for COVID, RSV, and Flu-A/B). So whilst I’m lying in bed I thought I’d indulge in some speculation as to what to expect from Volume 20 of Dojyomaru’s How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom. Volume 20 is due to release on the iPad tomorrow.

Obviously, this post will contain what I’m expecting (or hoping) will be spoilers. The link above goes to my review of Volumes 1 – 19.
