The Writers Guild of America is a slight misnomer. In fact, there are two separate unions, WGA West and WGA East. But they work in tandem, and once a year they come together to celebrate the past year’s achievements in writing. The 2011 awards were presented on Sunday, February 19, in a simultaneous, shared event that took place in both New York and Los Angeles.
The WGA recognizes the place of video games and new media alongside the more traditional radio, film, and television. Last night’s award for Outstanding Achievement in Videogame Writing was presented to writer Amy Hennig, for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
This is the second time Hennig’s work on Nathan Drake’s globetrotting, treasure-hunting adventures has been honored with a WGA award. She also won a 2009 award (in February, 2010) for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
Here are the rest of the nominees:

An action figure based on the character Blind Master that rapper, producer, and actor RZA is portraying in this summer’s G.I. Joe Retaliation, has been revealed at the 109th Annual American International Toy Fair.
Hasbro, who is creating the upcoming toy line for the film release on June 29, displayed figures for a number of the film’s characters, such as Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s Roadblock, Channing Tatum’s Duke, Bruce Willis’ Joe Colton, and RZA’s Blind Master.
The 3.75-inch action figures, which will be released this summer along with others based on the film, are sculpted to match their on-screen counterparts and will be priced at $7.99.
G.I. Joe is the brand that practically invented action figures back in 1964 when the company, along with toy producer Hasbro, released the original 12-inch line based on the different branches of the U.S Armed Forces.
RZA’s Blind Master character is a martial arts sensei and part of the Arashikage ninja clan that also includes other popular G.I. Joe characters Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow.
The 2012 Toy Fair, which attracts over 1,000 annual, worldwide exhibitors showcasing their upcoming product lines, is currently taking place at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.

So the other day I walked by a video game store in my neighborhood I had never seen in my life; probably because it’s next to a cleaners and used to look like a place that sold cell phones. I went in to check it out, and saw a flyer for a COD MW3 tournament being hosted right here in Rancho Chunkamunga California. Winners go on to a bigger tournament with huge prizes.
My first thought was to send a batch message to all the friends i knew that would be interested; but as the list got longer i started to think… And this isn’t to knock 1st person shooters cus I love them, but finding a Halo or whatever tournament is easier than finding an aspiring “event promoter” in L.A. I began to wonder why with all the popularity of fighting games like Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, Tekken (and if you’re one of us, Killer Instinct 64) why dont I walk by windows advertising these type of “Fight Club” Tournaments? Is it not as popular as I may think it is? And what the hell do you do with a fighting game if you’re not checking names off your shit-list?
I mean… I’m a die hard Street Fighter fan, but how many of you have actually watched the little movies they give you at the end? I haven’t since the 90’s.
I’m in it for the spirit of competition and the GLORY(I know, dramatic right?) And I’m sure there are hoards of like minded gamers who can’t fly to korea to get involved in the bigger competition who would still like to feel a part of this large community.
We need more competitions with decent purses in Southern California, and everywhere else for that matter.
This is a call to arms for all fighting game lovers… We must fix this

GregaMan over at Capcom-Unity just announced the coaches for the upcoming reality series Cross Assault. Alex Valle and Aris Bakhtanians will be joining Team Street Fighter and Team Tekken respectively, using their storied knowledge of each series to help their players dominate the competition. Both coaches offered a few words on their selection and the upcoming series.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to coach Team Street Fighter in Cross Assault. New and innovative competition is what brings hype to our scene and I’m excited to lead the team. With that said, I’m going make sure the bearded lady and his crew get rushed down!” – Alex Valle, Team Street Fighter
“I’m happy to be a part of any iPW x Spooky production and I’m looking forward to sending Valle and the rest of his team back to Mexico. I understand that team Street Fighter has the advantage in this competition, however, I doubt they know who they are messing with.” – Aris Bakhtanians, Team Tekken
We would like to extend our congratulations to both men, and we can’t wait to see them in action.

Dude, if you dig the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you’ll have to find a way to check out this year’s Toy Fair in New York (Feb. 12-15). That’s where Nickelodeon and Playmates will preview their extensive new TMNT product line which is based on Nick’s new CG-animated show set to premiere in the fall.
Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, TMNT aired from 1988 to 1996 and inspired some of the most popular licensed toys during those years. Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo will be featured in the new toys launched by Playmate in August.
“We’re excited to continue working with our long-standing partner Playmates on the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toy line,” says Manuel Torres, senior VP of global toys and consumer electronics, Nickelodeon. “Playmates understands the property and has helped us reinterpret the toys from a fresh perspective, while staying true to the action and fantasy of this iconic franchise. The new toys capture the excitement of our new series in a way that fans of all ages can appreciate.”
The Playmates collection features over 40 action figures; sound figures that deliver battle phrases and sound effects; classic action figures, which replicate the original Turtles from the 1988 TV show; vehicles; play sets; and roleplay gear including ninja weapon, sword and the signature bandana. The Playmates line also includes a set of 12-inch figures, which will be exclusive to Toys ‘R’ Us.

For the last eight years, EA Sports has proudly fired up the current iteration of Madden, and simulated the Super Bowl to predict its winner, generally with favorable results. EA is proud to call their sports games some of the best simulators around, so it makes sense that they fire them up for the big events and pass on the results—whether it be the Super Bowl, the World Cup/Champions League Finals, or the Stanley Cup. Besides, if they didn’t do it officially, others would just do it unofficially anyway.
So far the game has been mostly right, picking correctly six out of the last eight times. So in keeping with tradition, the folks at EA fired up Madden 12 and pitted the New England Patriots against the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. It was close, but according to EA Sports and Madden 12, this year’s champions will be the New York Giants.
In the simulation, the Giants had control throughout, heading into halftime with a 17-10 lead. As the third quarter winded down, Manning–who the game later crowned the Super Bowl MVP–led the Giants on another drive, pushing the score to 24-10 before the final quarter began. But not to be denied, Tom Brady earned his paycheck and brought the Patriots back with two unanswered touchdowns to tie the game at 24. With under 2 minutes left, Manning drove downfield, setting up Lawrence Tynes for the game winning field goal as time expired. And the digital New Yorkers went digitally crazy. They may have even had a digital parade and met the digital President in the digital White House.

Based on popular book series The Borrowers by Mary Norton, The Secret World of Arrietty is an animated adventure following a 14-year-old borrower, Arrietty, and the unlikely and even dangerous friendship she forms with an adolescent human, Shawn. Arrietty was created and first released by renowned Studio Ghibli (whose films Spirited Away and Ponyo have seen both critical and box office success) in Japan in 2010, quickly becoming the highest-grossing film at the box office that year, even going on to win the Animation of the Year Award. Now American audiences have the chance to witness this remarkable film firsthand when the English-language version from Walt Disney Animation Studios hits theaters nationwide on February 17.

“Final Fantasy XIII-2 proves itself the better game, but it lacks the same focused storytelling employed in the original. It benefits from an improved battle system, open environments, and an overall level of polish that deserves a nod of respect. Despite its severe lack of closure, Final Fantasy XIII-2 still deserves your time, especially for a few poignant moments set at the end of days.”
–Ryan Clements for IGN 80 of 100
“FFXIII-2 repairs almost every problem with Final Fantasy XIII, delivering an experience that feels like what that original game should have been. If your faith in Final Fantasy has been damaged by past disappointment, playing FFXIII-2 will restore your excitement for the franchise’s future.”
–Official XBOX Magazine(UK) 90 of 100
“Beneath the emotional tale and a superb cast of characters lies an abundance of shallow filler content with no real purpose It’s disappointing to see a game with so much heart struggle under the burden of artificial mechanics.”
–Playstation: The Official Magazine(US) 80 of 100
“Not the vastly different experience we might have expected, but no less welcome as a result. FFIII-2 comes recommended for those who didn’t get enough from the last game – however, those who were unconvinced are going to remain just that.”

Gravity Rush – or Daze, as it’s known in Japan – will be available at launch on February 22, as a downloadable title. As you’ll see, the game’s central premise is the control of gravity. That and weeping quietly at the beauty of the world.
Funimation announced on Thursday that it has suspended production on all future Blu-ray releases of the Dragon Ball Z television anime series, including the Level 2.1 disc that was originally scheduled to be released on March 27.
Funimation said that it had produced the Blu-ray editions of the series due to fan demand; however, the company explained that “due to technical challenges of restoring from the original film frame by frame, we are unable to continue these releases by way of this process.” The company added it will re-evaluate its process of creating these Blu-rays and will research more efficient methods of restoration. Funimation announced last July that it would release the series for the first time on Blu-ray. Funimation and the Dallas-based company ANDTRANSFER remastered the series from the original Japanese 16mm film reels at 1080p, keeping the original 4:3 aspect ratio. The first set, Dragon Ball Z Level 1.1, was released with the first 17 episodes on November 8.
This year’s E3 is already expected to bring with it a new direction for Nintendo’s still in development Wii U, and now rumours claim that it might even see a total re-brand for the device.
Citing “sources close to the platform holder”, CVG reckons that “serious discussions are ongoing at the highest level in the US and Japan as to whether the firm should cut its losses and give the console a different name” after what it describes as a disappointing E3 debut last year.
It also points out Nintendo’s decision to push the new TV tagline “This is not DS. This is Nintendo 3DS” in its UK ads for the handheld.
The platform holder itself has admitted that its choice of brand for the device confused consumers, many of whom believed it was nothing more than a DS with a 3D screen.
There is merit to the idea of ditching the Wii brand and starting afresh with its new machine.
At the same time, few gaming brands have established themselves so firmly in the wider public conscious as Wii. Is that something Nintendo is really ready to give up?
