notes:
It still amazes me how we get such great shows and great recordings from places you might not normally expect... from India no less!!! The crowd was ultra excited on this night and rightfully so. Roger also seemed in good spirits and genuinely honored to be there.

A seperate and special thanks and appreciation has to go out to the taper Rob (The Human Mic Stand) for his phenominal efforts to bring us this incredible document. He has given us some great recordings that span the past 20 years and here is another to add to the list. Thank You!!!
Enjoy!!!

What a fantastic concert!!! I always been in the 'anti-solo' career side but i must say this show will be always in the back of my mind. Extremely well played, i have nothing wrong to say about it. And less when i was there at the next day experiencing it live. The fucking flames!!! Why nobody told me there was 40mts tall fucking flames!!! That only worth the money of the ticket. Me and my mate were at 100mts far from the stage, and we felt the hot from the flames, so I asume that the people of the VIP section got a real nice tan

Experiencing a performance of Dark Side of The Moon live, with at least one of the original members on it, was a doubt for me at first. And of course i cant compare to the experience of many ppl that saw the original performances on the 70s, but to me in that precise moment was as magical as any other experience from the 70s. I lived it that way, and the giant screen, the perfect sound, that heavenly music and at least Roger Waters on stage, was all to me. I spent hours saying 'hey that's not PF it's the same than watching a tribute band with only 1 member on it' but NO. I was wrong, i had a great time.

The band plays absolutely perfect, and the guitarist played the Gilmour's solos even more accurate than him! (I wouldnt dare to say better because after all, our faboty is our fatboy

Highlights of the show to me were Have a Cigar (the solo was just perfect), Sheep, The Great Gig in the Sky (March 18th performance sounded a bit better to me) and Us & Them. Man, Us & Them is just great, a huge emotional charge.

About the recording itself, i spent like an hour moving the antenna to the right position, i felt paranoid about it cos you can hear a bit of interference during Speak To Me, but then it disapearred, and it's the only moment where you will hear something disturbing. Except for this small interference on StM, it sounds spotless. According to dan it sounds great.

Also, the DJs were kindly enough, they only talk at the beginning of the songs, or in between songs better said, and leave the song itself speechless, and no radio ID either. Most noticeable on the Dark Side of the Moon set where they didnt annoyed at all with their comments.... an example is that from Money to the very End of Eclipse, broadcast is speechless.

So a big thanks to danlynch and kudos to him for puting this thing together and releasing it for all of you.

I hope you enjoy this recording as much as I did.

cheers,

gbc

Bob Dylan: Genuine Live 66 (8 CD Set - FLAC)

Bob Dylan: Genuine Live '66 (8 CD Set - FLAC)
Scorpio put out the 8 CD set entitled Genuine Live 66 in 2000 (following in their tradition of sticking titles to Sony music.) It apparently contains "crystal clear line recordings" from many of the dates of the 1966 Dylan/Hawks UK tour. Much of this was previously unavailable or available only as poor audience recordings. Complete sets are still not present for some of the dates, from this it appears that recordings were not always complete.
The box set came with 3 postcards and a fold out poster (roughly 15 x 10 inches) of Bob standing on what looks to be a hotel desk. It also comes with two excellent booklets, one for the Australian tour and one for Europe.

The Rolling Stones: Got To Be Worked On! 1966-1970

These days aspiring bootleggers have many sources to choose from to compile a new release, as Rover Records has done with this brand new 2007 bootleg. Stones sessions can be found on Yellow Dog's Black Box, Invasion Unlimited's series of outtakes, Scorpio's Time Trips, the numerous Japanese labels that specialize in repackaging. What's needed then is a "concept". Rover Records has come up with a nice idea of putting together tracks that "could have, should have" been released except some tracks "got to be worked on!" Sound quality on this boot is seriously fantastic.

Rover has focused on The Stones' brilliant period from 1966 to 1970 when Brian Jones was still coherent, creative and committed, at least half the time. The sessions span from Their Satanic Majesties, Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed to Sticky Fingers. Practically everything here has been released before say some reviewers but to these ears, if they have, I have not heard them in this quality. Perhaps the most bootlegged tracks here are the ones from the Beggar's album - outtakes of Stray Cat Blues, Parachute Woman, Factory Girl, Dear Doctor and No Expectations. Coming a close second are the outtakes from Sticky Fingers.

The two tracks that make their debut appearance on bootleg are Version 3 of Get Yourself Together and perhaps Yesterday's Papers. Here's a review from the net by "Another": "The first tracks are produced by Andrew Oldham: "Get Yourself Together" features Stu on piano and ends with Charlie still banging on the drums, while "Yesterday's Papers" has Jagger almost cracking in laughs while singing. "Sometimes Happy, Sometimes Blue" is the early take of "Dandelion" with Keith Richards on vocals. "Old King Cole" is an instrumental early take of "We Love You", produced by Glyn Johns. With "Child Of The Moon" that features Nicky Hopkins on this alternate mix version enters Jimmy Miller in the production seat.

"The version of "Jumping Jack Flash" comes from the first take recorded live in the studio, used for the promo film (without make up); on "Pays Your Dues" there is Rick Grech on electric violin while Roger Chapman is on background vocals. "Stray Cat Blues" is an alternate mix with ad lib vocals, louder bass and lead guitar. "No Expectations" feature Nicky Hopkins on piano and Stu on organ and starts with some studio dialogue, while you can hear Jagger mumbling the melody during the song. On "You Got The Silver" never have the acoustic guitars sound so wide open. "Wild Horses #1" is the 4th version which is a reworked take of the 3rd version without piano. Ry Cooder is on guitar on "Sister Morphine" while the alternate take of "Gimme Shelter" has no backing vocals. Nicky Hopkins' piano introduces differently "Loving Cup", the take of "Bitch" is the alternate mix, second version. No sax is featured on "Brown Sugar" and Jim Dickinson is featured on tack piano in the second version of "Wild Horses"."

It reads like an "insider" doing the review. Thanks muchly.

All tracks were recorded at London's Olympic Studios except the final two, Brown Sugar and Wild Horses, which were recorded at Muscle Shoals. By the way, it appears Rover Records is a European label.

Review by OSWALD From Hotwacks:
Billed as home studio recordings from 1965-1975, this set is a pretty monumental collection of Townsend's demos. The nature of the material makes it impossible to tell how comprehensive it is, but a quick glance imparts that this collection very nicely supercedes a series of releases, both underground and sanctioned.
As any Who fan knows, Townsend's home demos make for fascinating listening -- many of the arrangements, licks, and even vocal phrasing is already present on these rougher takes. Add to that a sort of home-made funkiness (think a more pissed-off, English version of the Band), and you have a set of recordings that stack up very well against their more familiar later, full-band versions. Townsend has leaked out this sort of stuff on the SCOOP collections for some time, but those have always been piecemeal affairs -- one track from here, another from ten years later, synth instrumentals next to unreleased songs. This collection is wonderfully focused, chronological, and in pretty strong fidelity. The three Who benchmarks, TOMMY, WHO'S NEXT, and QUADROPHENIA, are well represented, as are a host of popular album and singles tracks in sketchbook form. The thrill of having these cuts in one place and in a reasonable order is indescribable. The drawbacks to this set are few --sound quality is pretty consistant, the material is endlessly engaging. My one complaint is the packaging. A cool mini-poster of rare foreign EP sleeves is killer, but there are no notes to put the cuts into context. That being said, it's pretty obvious where this stuff comes from, and it should be of major interest to Who buffs the world over. Pete's demo of "Empty Glass" might be the most intense thing he ever laid down...

Review by Matt Whipple from Hypertext Who:
This is another beautiful package from HIWATT! A super 5 CD set complete with a 9.5" x 14" double-sided poster. The tracks are all PT demos presented in chronological order of when they were recorded. The back insert states: "ALL TRACKS RECORDED 1965-1975 BY PETE TOWNSHEND IN HIS HOME STUDIOS: OLD CHURCH STREET, CHELSEA AND TWICKENHAM".
Although I doubt that any of the tracks for Who Are You were recorded prior to 1975. The majority of these tracks were taken from Pete's Scoop series, The Lifehouse Chronicles and Pete's website. Disc 1 actually has a 26th song not listed on the disc - Accidents (this was written by Pete for the Thunderclap Newman release - w. Speedy Keene and a very young Jimmy McCollough a lead guitarist). On Disc 2, last 2 seconds of track 3 starts to play Jaguar. Disc 5, Track 18 - should be No Road Romance NOT No Road Running as stated on the back scan. The others are from various bootlegs still not officially released. An initial listen reveals excellent sound quality.

ExtraInfo: An additional member of the JA lineup here is the sound equipment / monitors / feed for the soundboard: Martian howlings, dropped channels, dropped feed to the main speakers, etc. Still -- Jorma, Jack, and Marty were freshly back from their Jamaican fiasco and in an odd mood, and Grace was on the cusp of insemination by Paul Kantner (you can hear her here call him "dear"!) and ready to move to Bolinas with him. The band was confident to the point of cockiness, and while expressing concern to the audience ("Can you hear?") and experiencing the sound
troubles for themselves, merrily acid-burned their way to one of my favorite Airplane shows EVER!

The vocals in this overpower the guitars, bass, and drums for once: very appropriate for one of the best vocal rock bands -- period.

"No Quarter" was recorded in 1972 at Island Studios, London. It was engineered by Andy Johns and also mixed by Johns at Olympic Studios, London.
During live performances of this song Jones would improvise on keyboards and often play bits of classical music. The song took on a very mysterious texture on stage as many lights and simulated fog were used. On Led Zeppelin's 1975 and later tours, John Paul Jones would also play a short piano concerto (on a grand piano) frequently turning the seven-minute song into a performance exceeding twenty minutes. He was particularly fond of playing Rachmaninoff pieces, but sometimes included snatches of Amazing Grace and also Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez which had inspired Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain. One incredible version of the song, recorded at the Kingdome in Seattle in 1977, is an epic thirty six minutes, where, after the piano solo, Jones leads the group into a rip-roaring R&B based jam, as a lead in to the guitar solo proper (similar versions can also be heard on the "Destroyer" bootleg).
