During the start of the semester, I was really looking forward about the subject because this is something I did not really have the opportunity to go deeper into its topics or should I say, during my time the materials were limited. I really enjoyed going through every topic of discussion as it was sort of a discovery for me. At my age, and considering I am not a technical person to start with, it gave me some insights about MIS.
I learned many about technology/software which I did not realize it was part of this subject. Like collaboration tools, business intelligence, knowledge management, etc. It gave somehow a formality to all that I have been exposed to in my work, in which if I had known it sooner, I should not have learned it in a hard way in terms of my professional development. Being a newbie in an organization, in which the culture is “survival of the fittest”, it was a struggle and at the same time a challenge to force yourself into something unfamiliar (in terms of software, IT platform, tools) to know it as fast as you can because of competition.
I have developed a sound knowledge and understanding of the discipline of Information Systems and have gained practical knowledge within the real world of IT. Although I am a bit slower on my database laboratory practices, I am enjoying it. I know it would take the time to practice, but I am glad that I am doing it and I will surely continue until I develop the skill and expertise perhaps on the subject matter and be able to put them into use both in my personal and professional development.
On this day, it matters to know about the subject because it’s all around us and has certainly no signs of slowing down. In terms of my professional development, it’s imperative to develop the skills and experience in communication of IT issues to justify, critically evaluate and explain real-world situations leading to IT management decisions and to develop and demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills. In my personal development, it makes me productive, efficient and effective in my daily routines and interests. It offers a quicker way to gain information which is provided by the internet.
In addition, the expertise of our professor and the wide range of ideas had made the subject really interesting and fun. I know, sooner or later, I would use all of the learnings that I have gained through the subject. You just need to have an open mind always to appreciate its worth, no matter how difficult you may perceive it to be.
