Enter The Frankathon...

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 May 2014 – Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF) today launched The Frankathon, a running event in support of Frank Chong, a cancer survivor who will be running the 89.28km Comrades Marathon in South Africa for the third time on 1 June 2014 to raise funds for CARIF.

Malaysian cancer survivor, Frank Chong is beating the odds and doing the seemingly impossible by committing himself to run the world’s most challenging ultra-marathon, under the banner of the ‘Be Frank’ Campaign.

The ‘Be Frank’ Campaign was launched by CARIF in May 2013 to provide an avenue to empower the public to reach out within their communities to raise funds and cancer awareness. The word ‘Frank’ is used to encourage Malaysians to be open about cancer.

“I am uniting my passion of running and my role as a cancer survivor, hoping it will be a small step towards a future free from fear of cancer. Like the 89.28km Comrades Marathon, fighting cancer is one long and tough journey. Therefore, while I am running the ultra-marathon, show your support by joining The Frankathon!” said cancer survivor and sole inspiration of the ‘Be Frank’ Campaign, Frank Chong.

In conjunction with Frank running the Comrades Marathon, CARIF is launching The Frankathon in partnership with Celebrity Fitness Malaysia, M+ Pharmacy, M&C Saatchi and Priority Communications.

“Cancer is a disease that affects thousands of families across Malaysia every day. We are launching The Frankathon to give the Malaysian public an inspiration to fight cancer by raising funds for cancer research,” said Prof. Dr Teo Soo-Hwang, Chief Executive Officer of CARIF.  “Anyone and everyone can be like Frank! Let’s ‘Outrun Cancer’ together!”

“The funds raised through The Frankathon will be used for research to identify new therapeutics for treatment of head and neck cancer, research into the discovery of new breast cancer loci and to look for pathway-specific anti-cancer compounds from our natural resources. No donation or contribution is too small or trivial, and we hope that more individuals and corporations will support CARIF towards our vision of a future free from fear of cancer,” she added.

CARIF invites both individual and organizations to participate and ‘Pledge a Kilometer’, all in the name of solidarity for cancer awareness and raise funds for the on-going research to help Malaysians beat cancer.

You can participate in The Frankathon as individuals throughout the month of May to June 2014 by running The Frankathon on your own at home, at the park, in the gym or anywhere you want! Then, ‘Donate your Kilometers’ by uploading a #selfie of yourself running on the ‘Be Frank’ Facebook (www.facebook.com/befrank.my) with the tag #OutrunCancer.

Alternatively, you can also participate in the on ground event at the Main Concourse area on the Ground Floor of Bangsar Village 1 from 29 May to 31 May 2014. There are two categories for individuals, namely the Fun Run (running 2km or 10min on the treadmill) and ‘Beat the Kilometers’ (running 5km on the treadmill).

If you would like to do more to fight cancer, purchase the official The Frankathon bib at RM5 from Celebrity Fitness Malaysia (Mid Valley, Bangsar Village 1 and One Utama outlets) and run The Frankathon on your own. Otherwise, you can contribute to cancer research in Malaysia by purchasing a ‘Pledge a Kilometer’ voucher at RM100 from M+ Pharmacy, Lower Ground Floor, Bangsar Village 1 or CARIF. Voucher holders are entitled to ‘run with Frank’ on 1 June 2014 at the Main Concourse area of Bangsar Village 1 upon registration - while Frank is running the ultra-marathon in South Africa, you can ‘run with Frank’ as the Comrades Marathon is streamed live at the on ground event.

You can also participate in The Frankathon as organizations by forming a team of 20 to run the 90km Frankathon on 29 May to 1 June 2014 at in Bangsar Village 1 or you can opt to ‘Pledge a Kilometer’ and we will pick a team to run 90km on your behalf.

Doing It Again, For The 3rd Time!

It's the time of the year again. With the Comrades Marathon 2014 fast approaching, here I am again together with Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF) in "re-launching" again the Be Frank campaign. Similar to the previous 2 years, I will once again dedicate my Comrades Marathon towards cancer research and staying true to how it was done, special edition shirts were printed. And this year, we went a little more adventurous by using brighter colours in celebration of life. The following is CARIF's write-up about this year's campaign.

Frank Chong, a cancer survivor who has inspired the "Be Frank" campaign is going for his 3rd attempt at the Comrades Marathon downhill run in South Africa on 1 June 2014. Why is he running the world's most challenging ultra-marathon instead of taking a walk in the park? We speak to him to know more:

Why are you running the Comrades Marathon?
The Comrades Marathon is certainly the toughest run I have ever done and as part of a cause to raise awareness and funds for cancer research in CARIF. I am uniting my passiion of running and a role as a cancer survivor, hoping it will be a small step towards a future free from fear of cancer. Like the 89.28KM Comrades Marathon, fighting cancer is one long and tough journey. Therefore, support cancer research, support CARIF!

Frank donating his Comrades Marathon medals from 2013 to CARIF. Receiving it, Professor Teo (CARIF CEO) and YM Tunku Tan Sri Dato' Seri Ahmad (Trustee)

What is the "Be Frank" Campaign?
I strongly believe that cancer is not a death sentence and that hope is certainly out there. With CARIF, the "Be Frank" Campaign was launched in order to inspire and urge the public to join us to raise funds and awareness for cancer research in Malaysia.

How can you contribute?
Again this year, Frank will dedicate this year's "Downhill" run of the Comrades Marathon towards cancer research in CARIF. You can support Frank by a simple donation of any amount or by purchasing the official Be Frank t-shirts priced at RM50.00 which are tax-exempted, available at Running Lab, Tropicana City Mall or call us at +603 5639 1874 to place your orders.

7 Things Cancer Patients Should Know About Their Health Insurance...

If you or your loved ones have been burdened by the horrific news of cancer, it’s best to take some time to step back, and don’t lose hope. Don’t let the fear of financial hardships bring you down -- that’s what your insurance is for. It’s going to be a challenging journey ahead, so it’s best to equip yourself with knowledge: here are a few things cancer patients should knowabout their medical insurance.

Appeal
When your insurance claim is denied or dropped, worry not—you can make an appeal. You need not suffer in silence and deal with the consequences on your own. To increase your chances of being heard, you can ask your doctor to help you. Furthermore, your doctor and hospital should know that they can’t bill you at least until after you’ve fixed things with your insurance company.

Annual Deductible
This is basically the first thing you have to check in your insurance because this will determine how much the insurance company needs you to spend first before they start paying for your medical expenses.

Annual Limit
It’s important to know the total amount of coverage your insurance will give you in a year, so be fully aware if you can make the most out of your benefits.

Extra Billing
If you haven’t heard of balance billing yet, it’s when the insurance company pays only a part of your bill because they think that you’re able to pay for the rest.

Coinsurance versus Copayment
Coinsurance is simply the percentage of your payment in the health care service. For example, your care states that your coinsurance payment is 30%, then you pay for that and the plan pays for the rest. Copayments are payments made for services preset by the insurance policy, and is billed to you every time you avail of these services.

Stop Loss or Out of Pocket Feature
This is a definite must-have feature in your insurance policy. The stop loss or out of pocket feature ensures that after you have personally paid for a specific limit your insurance providers have set, they will cover the rest of your expenses, 100%. Insured payables include annual deductibles, coinsurance, and copayment.

Always Look for a Plan B
If your current health insurance drops you and your appeal is denied a second time, it’s best to ask for help—you can ask for government aid or ask professionals who know the right people or insurance companies to talk to during for such situations. These people will help you understand policies better and offer you other options.

As a final reminder, make sure that you, your friends and family keep a good record of all transactions and visits both to the hospital and your insurance provider. Of course, it is also vital to be fully aware of your policy’s coverage. Read it over and over again to make sure you are not missing out on any specific help you could still be getting. Your insurance policy is supposed to make things better for you, not make things worse, so keep hoping for the best and you will definitely see things through.

Terry Fox Run KL 2013...

By Frank

It's the time of the year again, at least for cancer activist like myself, volunteers and the folks from Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF), the beneficiary for the Terry Fox Run KL. The Terry Fox Run KL 2013 was successfully held this morning (1 December 2013) at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa.

My message of hope.

A little about Terry Fox before I elaborate further on my experience with this year's run. The late Terry Fox is a Canadian who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on his right leg where it had to be amputated. After undergoing treatment, he went on to run the Marathon of Hope hoping to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He ran a marathon distance of 42KM each day for 143 consecutive days totalling to 5,373KM before he had to stop when he found out that the cancer had returned. The cancer spread and he soon passed away a few days before his 23rd birthday.

I hold the Terry Fox Run very dear to my heart due not only to my history of cancer, but also the role and purpose of the run it self, to create cancer awareness, research and to promote healthy living. I been supporting the run since don't know when and participated in it when I first found out about the KL edition back in year 2006. And this year marks my second year as part of the committee.

The committee with old and new faces had our first and only meeting at our usual meeting spot at Marmalade, Bangsar Village 2 some couple of months back. A little brainstorming and we are all good to go.

And thus, I am once again selling this year's awesome looking t-shirt over at my place. We had only about 3 weeks to sell the t-shirts before run days itself but thanks to the enthusiasm of the public, sales were good where I managed to outsell my previous years number by selling close to 1,000 t-shirts! WOOOTSSS! Sizes availability was much better this year and I worked very closely especially with Peter. For the past years, Peter who is a scientist by profession over at CARIF, was the one who will deliver the shirts to me. This year however, saw me travelling a bit to help ease his role. As a reward, I get free lunch from him! *grin... After all, he has a more noble and important job to deal with rather to delivering t-shirts. So yeah, I was in and out of CARIF for most of November 2013.

With the dedication board.

Anyway, to run day itself. Unlike last year, I couldn't attend the pre-run briefing the day before this time as I had too much work to do as it was month end. Hence, I arrived a little early at about 6am and the weather held up and it was a not too sunny morning which was really good as the action started almost immediately. I directed the water boys to somewhere 1KM from the start along the run route for unloading before I ran back to help out with the t-shirt sales which was packed with people. Wore proudly my red Team Terry's t-shirt (although I do not want anyone to suffer to actually own it) and was together with Mrs Kang, Myrt, Taty and Edwin while Professor Teo's kids helped out with the receipts. Great teamwork there where we tried to get everyone's desired t-shirt sizes. Met up with some friends too who came to support the cause of the run.

T-shirt tents.

The run itself started at around 8.30am and that was when we get our precious little rest time. However, the action did not stop at the other end where t-shirts from the previous years were selling like hot cakes at a very attractive price.

Family and advanced route.

By 10.30am, the event came to a close and crowd started to settle down and we started with cleaning and packing. Everyone helped out from young to old. Great teamwork among the volunteers!

Overall, once again I had a very rewarding time this year at the Terry Fox Run KL, a 100% driven by volunteers event where all donations collected will be channelled to cancer research. A shout-out to everyone whether committees, volunteers and participants of this truly remarkable and inspiring event as we wrap things up for 2013! Till 2014's edition!

It'sa wrap!

How Early Detection Can Save...

By Frank

With Terry Fox Run (Marathon of Hope) into its 33rd edition this year and with the KL run just under a month away, here's a short recap on how I discovered Rhabdomyosarcoma, cancer of the connective tissue that affected me.

When I first discovered a swelling on my left wrist back in early year 1992, I didn't know what was it. Maybe it was just a typical swelling when I rested by wrist on the table or perhaps due to sports (played handball and football during those days). A check with the family doctor, Dr. Tan didn't reveal much and thus thinking it was gangrene. However, after having second thoughts, Dr. Tan called up the next day to arrange for a scan at Maria Specialist Hospital with Dr. Chiew. And thus from there, my first encounter with cancer started.

The scan revealed a lump embed within my left wrist and surgery was needed to remove it. And so in March 1992, surgery was performed by Dr. Chiew and the marble sized whitish lump was removed and sent to Mount Elizabeth Hospital for lab testing. The result returned a couple of weeks later while I was having my first high school semester exam. The result was a negative one and treatment was needed immediately.

Being a 12 year old back then and considered a growing teenager, I was unique as Rhadbomyosarcoma generally affects children aged 5 to 7 years old. Chemotheraphy was administered at Singapore National University Hospital (SNUH) under the care of Dr. Quah TC. After a 6 months cycle period, I was transferred to Singapore General Hospital (SGH)  for Radiotheraphy under the care of Dr. Yang TL . It was for a one month period. Finally, it was back to SNUH again for to continue with Chemotherapy and ending again with Chemotherapy, this time on a stronger more potent dosage.

One particular chemo drug that was administered on me that I remembered clearly till today for its potency is Adriamycin, a clear red liquid that does most what other chemo drugs does but with an extra, potential damage to the heart cells. This was the same drug that was administered for my hero, Canada's late Terry Fox too when he battled Osteosarcoma, a pretty similar cancer to what I battled.

2 years down the road, I successfully overcame my sickness, just in time for my PMR exam though not doing very well in it. The next 10 years was to watch for any symptoms of relapse and I was glad I live through it healthily. And during that 10 years, I managed to pick myself up performing pretty well in both studies and sports. And today, here is where I am, doing that I do best in endurance sports, long distance running and in the meantime helping to raise awareness about cancer together with CARIF and the outreach program Be Frank.

Before this post gets too long as the above is basically just a recap, what I am trying to share is that cancer is not a death sentence. Early detection of cancer is the far most important in survival rate and it all lies within no other than our ownself. Never to afraid to stand up to it, to ask around  and to fight it. A small growth, lump, pain or anything abnormal you are feeling anywhere on your body, quickly have it check. It may not be 100% cancer, but it's always good to know. I may have taken 2 years of treatment to battle it and although it does sound pretty long and obviously a painful journey, I may not be here to blog about it should I chose to let the swelling be. And besides, with medical advancement nowadays, treatment may be even more "friendly" and less painful. Just remember, be bold, be brave and most importantly Be Frank about cancer.

If you have any doubts about something suspicious happening to your body, do plan a quick visit to your friendly neighbourhood doctor to have it check out. And with many plans out there which includes AXA110 Cancer Care, cancer treatment has never been easier.

Be Frank - Yogathon...

By Frank

The Yogathon is the second fund raiser under the Be Frank campaign where the first was the one I did in conjunction with the Comrades Marathon 2013. The Yogathon was successfully held yesterday, 29 June 2013 at the Piano Lounge, Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club and is a campaign inspired and driven by Joey Liang, a yoga instructor from Serenity Yoga who has lost  a dear friend to cancer and hopes one day, that cancer will finally have a cure.

The Yogathon banner welcoming us in the Piano Lounge.

The Yogathon brought out about a strong 40 yogis of all ages and genders on a clear Saturday morning. Staffs from CARIF including Professor Teo, Sook Yee and Jane was there together with familiar faces from my circle of friends like Bennie, Lyana, Roy, Ericca and Mak too.

The event kick started off around 9am with a speech and basic guidance from Joey herself. She was assisted by Joyce at the same time too walking around to make sure that everyone had their poses right. Most of the moves were pretty do-able  though some like the warrior and tree pose may be a bit challenging. But both of them tried their very best to assist each and everyone of us to make sure we all had fun stretching it out to a wonderful weekend.

With Lyana, Joey and Bennie stretching ourselves into the weekend.

I myself had lots of fun alongside Bennie and it was a fruitful event. At the end of the 2 hour session, we sat around in a circle to remember those affected by cancer and some even shed tears in remembering them. All in all, this has proof that a simple gesture like having a yoga session is strong enough to deliver the message and also exploring the myths of cancer together. The funds raised through the Yogathon all channels towards cancer research driven by CARIF themselves. We hope that Joey will continue to inspire us and I hope that this Yogathon will continue to go on in the near future for it not only delivers the message across, but also for the well being of our both physical and mental.

Be Frank & Help Beat Cancer...

Be Frank is the continuation from 2012's The Ultimate Race for Cancer Research campaign which tells my story as a cancer survivor and my passion of running in uniting sports and cancer research. The below is the press release to this year's campaign being Be Frank.

This is a story of Frank Chong, a cancer survivor who was diagnosed of Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer that affects muscle and connective tissues at the tender age of 12. Today, he has accomplished what was seemingly impossible, he has trained as long distance runner and is now an ultra-marathon runner

This campaign captures the very essence of Frank himself. His dedication to support cancer research by fund raising through his ‘The Ultimate Race for Cancer Research’, his courage in facing up to the cancer which has affected him and his determination to support cancer awareness by speaking up about cancer.

His journey began together with CARIF in year 2012 when he successfully conquered the world’s oldest and probably toughest road ultra marathon running the distance of 89.7KM at the Comrades Marathon 2012, South Africa. This year, together with CARIF once again, Frank will attempt yet again the Comrades Marathon on 2nd June 2013, running the reverse route “Up hill” to complete the finisher’s medal. Like his “Down hill” run last year, he will again dedicate this year’s “Up hill” run of the Comrades Marathon towards cancer.

So, let's Be Frank and Fund Raise for Cancer Research.

Join us in our fund raising efforts for cancer research. You can support Frank's Ultimate Race for Cancer Research by direct donations to Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation or by purchasing the official Be Frank - TURCR t-shirts at RM60.00 each which is made available at Running Lab, Tropicana City Mall and CARIF main laboratory at Outpatient Centre, Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya.

Or you can be like Frank and use your passion and interests to fund raise for cancer research. Be it a cupcake sale in the office or shaving your head to raise funds, we will support you and help you achieve your target. Contact us at www.befrank.com.my for more information.

Thank you and we hope to have your support for this campaign!

About CARIF (Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation)
CARIF came from a humble beginning. In 1997, Professor Stephen Prime, an eminent oral cancer pathologist and researcher from the University of Bristol approached Tan Sri Tunku Ahmad Yahaya, CEO of Sime Darby Berhad and a Bristol alumni, about the possibility of raising funds to conduct oral cancer research. Oral cancer affects mostly Asians, particularly those in South East Asia and the Indian subcontinent, and was not receiving attention by the major pharmaceutical industry or by funding agencies in the UK. Tan Sri Tunku in turn roped in Dr Teo Soo Hwang, a Yayasan Sime Darby Scholar who graduated in Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge. At that time, Dr Teo was doing her post-doctoral research. Over the next 2 years, she worked with Tan Sri Tunku Ahmad and Toh Puan Aishah Ong to raise funds for a new cancer research organisation in Malaysia.

CARIF then
CARIF was incorporated as company limited by guarantee in June 2000 with the support and donation from these key individuals and organisations: Tan Sri Azizan and Tan Sri Hassan Merican (PETRONAS), Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay and Mrs Leong Lim Siew Lian (Genting) and Tan Sri Tunku Ahmad Yahaya. Tote Board had also donated RM2 million, while PETRONAS had donated RM1 million and Yayasan Lim donated RM1 million for 4 years.

The CARIF laboratory was established in Sime Darby Medical Centre (then known as Subang Jaya Medical Centre) in Jan 2001. With just a temporary laboratory of 700 sq ft and only 6 scientists, the first months were focussed on establishing collaborations to begin Malaysian cancer research. In August 2002, CARIF moved into a custom-made facility of 2,500 sq ft and the facilities have been provided, rent-free by Sime Darby Medical Centre. CARIF was officially launched by the Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in October 2002.

CARIF now
Today, we are a 33-strong all-Malaysian team of researchers consists of: 7 PhD scientists, 14 MSc scientists, 9 graduate scientists and 3 support staff, and our numbers are growing. Many of our staff are training and obtaining Masters and PhD’s in cancer research. CARIF will continue to invest in recruiting, retaining and training the nation’s most talented and highly-skilled scientists in our fight against cancer.

Halting Tumor Cells From Spreading By Blocking "Hostile Mergers"...

I was contacted by Professor Charles Keller of OHSU Knight Cancer Institute to share his research on rhabdomyosarcoma. We all may know that although rhabdomyosarcoma has a cure, there is still much to do to help ease the pain and burden. Here, he explains the research being done to halt the spread of the tumor growth by blocking a certain "hostile merger". Here the below is more on his work.

Project abstract
Childhood muscle cancer is extremely difficult to cure when the cancer cells have spread throughout the body. Our preliminary data suggest that this cancer might actually use our very own stem cells and normal cell-to-cell communication system to metastasize. We believe tumor cells 'talk' to muscle stem cells and convince them to secrete growth factors that enable tumor cells to spread to new sites in the body. In fact, it also appears that tumor cells fuse to muscle stem cells - more than just cell-to-cell talk, and a rather unexpected 'hostile merger'. We have identified a specific receptor that appears to be responsible for this effect. With a blocking antibody to the receptor we can already stop the spreading of tumors to lymph nodes or to the lungs in mouse experiments. While the same kind of blocking antibodies have had successful safety testing in asthma studies by pharmaceutical companies, we have one last critical series of experiments to conduct before partnering to apply our results to the clinic: we must test whether fusion of tumor cells to normal stem cells is the key event, or whether metastasis results when tumor cells and normal stem cells simply cross-talk without merging/fusing. Either possibility exists, but would change the way the intervention is taken to clinical trials. We are seeking to raise $19,634 for the key experiments (1) to observe the time course of tumor cells fusing with normal stem cells, and (2) to test whether fused cells are more or less capable of establishing tumors than mixed but unfused cells. This experiment can be completed within 6 months of raising project funds, and the results will be not only sent for publication, but also shared with (i) the Children’s Oncology Group clinical trial committee for rhabdomyosarcoma and (ii) a major pharmaceutical company with the appropriate therapeutic antibody that might be used in a clinical trial for children with rhabdomyosarcoma.

Why is this important?
We believe our finding of how tumor cells actually use our own stem cells to metastasize is a largely new paradigm that may be relevant to cancers of adults and children alike. Thus, our study begins with the solid tumor of muscle, rhabdomyosarcoma, but may spark similar studies (and similar kinds of treatment) for other tumors if our hypothesis is correct.

Who will benefit from the result of this project?
We specifically seek to improve the dismal outcome of children with metastatic muscle cancer, whose outcome has improved so little since the beginning of national clinical trials in 1972.
