#IT: Life changing

It’s almost 12weeks since we started with MIS module in our MMBM second semester curriculum. And it’s amazing how we learn a lot of things more than what I expected as only a computer course this trimester.

With the refresher on Excel and added learnings on its features, I became a better and more efficient user of the program. It is very useful for me who analyzes a number of data on a daily basis. Truly, I am amazed with the features of Excel I never knew how to use before this module.

Database Access is another discovery for me. I graduated from the University during such a time when Access was still not taught in the University and I feel so blessed to have taken this course timely.

Both my professional and personal life became more efficient with the learnings I get every Saturday. I was able to share these learnings wih my store teams and I feel so empowered knowing I can be a better Group Manager towards them and the Company. I got so many plans I want to implement and I know Information Systems helped me in all avenues of my learnings and leading everyday.

Personally, I feel empowered. I was able to properly managet my time for family since I finish my work fast with these new knowledge on MIS.

The entire MIS book is a great refresher and learning for me as well as I learn a number of things on Management of my teams, most especially Project Management. I was able to impart a jest of that to the team and they too had a lot of realizations on how we used to do things in the store.

Truly, this is one exciting and knowledge-packed module. I thank you Mr. Belanio for such a wonderful trimester.

Social e-development

Social media is a tool almost all of netizens find indispensible with. Almost all of us cannot let a day pass without using any social media sites.

Personally, i believe social media helped in my development through the improvement of my social skills. I grew up doing most things on my own and having very small groups. With the use of social media, I am able to expand my acquaintance base and express my self more.

#Pirated vs Genuine Software in the Philippines

When you see a movie, there comes this caution at the commencement  of the movie regarding Piracy—-and such piracy applies to all, from movie DVDs to music downloading to computer software. But, inasmuch as the Philippine government is posing its sternness on the imposition of the Anti-Piracy Law, there seems to rampant practice still in our community.

As a citizen of this country belonging to the middle class who can afford gadgets, both form home and personal use, there seems to be a dilemma everytime there is a need for a computer software. Number one concern is COST. Quality is second.

It seems but practical for an ordinary person to look at the cost of something he/she buys over the market. And genuine computer software are overtly expensive compared to pirated ones. That leads to customers opting for the cheaper and with practically same-usefulness software.

Hence, the Philippine government must look at ways on how to somehow narrow the cost gap of genuine vs pirated computer software. This might include imposing stricter price floor on pirated and price ceiling on genuine ones. This might seem hilarious, but these are ways to somehow address this concern.

Knowledge Management Per Se @ QSR

I am involved in the business of selling burgers or what we call the Quick Service Restaurant industry. This industry needs innovative people to deliver the highest quality for the brand, as well as ensuring growing sales, positive income and happy people.

Being in this industry, I acknowledge the need for Knowledge Management.

Why?

Because, this Company cannot and would not have prospered if not the knowledge management practices in the organization.

Such practices include: 1. Job Competency assessment which breakdowns activities an employee engages in at the moment and is skilled with; 2. Such data is transferred to a 9-box grid which facilitates identification and categorization of employees based on their explicit and implicit knowledge; 3. Manager Training system identifies what are the knowledge and skills you have learned from others as well as what you have taught and shared with others; among others.

Basically, I believe the barriers for implementing this Knowledge Management system would be the personal choice of an employee to learn and grow as well as to share his/her knowledge with others.

In this fast-paced environment, I suggest top management must consider getting emotionally-ready employees who are going to be open both in learning and sharing. Though “Knowledge is power”, it is better that that knowledge is shared for empowerment. Why? Because not only a selected few have the best ideas in the company, mostly these great ideas come form people or employees who are reluctant to speak up. Organizations must need to modify ways on how these ideas and practices will be shared in the entire organization so as the Company will succeed. #

#Business Intelligence Incentives

Business intelligence tools are the lingo of the corporate world. It might seem so far-fetching when I first heard it, but I eventually appreciated the value and usage of these much-needed tools.

Organizations should encourage use of these business intelligence tools through the provision of a performance management system which incorporates usage of at least two BI tools. And why would top management approve this kind of performance management system category? Simple! This is how the new competitive landscape works.

Being involved in a fast-paced world of quick service restaurants, I have evolved from somebody who does not even memorize the keyboard placement in the desktop computer to a person who sees everyday as worthless without getting involved with spreadsheets and google search. With such “evolvement” as a person and an employee had fostered a sense of innovation and accomplishment on my part. 70% of my worklife is dependent on data and objective analysis of such and using reliable and efficient BI tools ensures that the decisions I make regarding sales and income plans and approvals are backed up with a sound judgement.

Incentive programs would surely boost the need for the employees to navigate these tools or else they will not be conscious using these tools. Being a witness of having incentives motivating downlines in performing, I suggest top management would consider this proposal of incentive program incorporated in giving rewards. Having a punitive action on non-using of these BI tools are, I believe, a  passive approach to employee dealings and ultimately business performance.

Merit increases basically leverage on performance appraisal ratings, so having a pay raise would be a result of an employees performance and if the usage of BI tools are incorporated in the Performance Management System of the Company, then it follows that pay raises are somewhat a result of using these BI tools.

Much more than incentives or merit increases, I believe that BI tools are a great help to business people and even individuals in ensuring a sound, innovative and reliable data which they can use in decision making, may it be in their work or personal lives.#

#Internet Shopping

Shopping on the internet nowadays is a fad for a number of Filipinos. This is a very convenient habit of most Westerners, but this only became a hit thing here in the Philippines in the last 3-5 years with the advent of commercialism and influence of social media.

Shopping on the internet can be more convenient for Filipinos if there is shorter lead time in the delivery of item and with the use of remittance partners as payment facility since not all Filipinos has a credit card and remittance centers cater to a number of transactions and popularly become an easy avenue as payment facility for a number of Filipinos.

With such new innovations, three products I might not have any hesitation buying would be 1. toiletries 2. office supplies and 3.  soda items. Three items I might think over before buying through the net would be 1. personal garments 2. make-up and 3. clothes. On the other hand, the three items that I would never consider buying over the net are: 1. Perishable food 2. jewelry and 3. car.

Toiletries, Office supplies and soda items are three of my mostly used items in a day. Since I often use them, I try a variety of brands so as I can choose and consider which one is better over the other. With me having knowledge on the different perks of these toiletries, office supplies and soda items, i know that I can order these over the net and I am confident of the quality all ready.

Three items, on the other hand, that I might think over before buying are personal garments, make-up and clothes since these are personal to me and I might consider using them depending on my mood, needs at work or personal events and timing. With such, there are certain precautions since I might not like the texture though I like the design or fit.

The three items that I will not consider buying over the net are perishable foods, jewelry and car since these are very critical to my own personal needs and liking. Eating depends on my mood, wearing jewelry seldom happens but this costs a lot that committing a mistake in purchasing entails a heavy consequence, same with a car.

Looking at the different categories of items that I might prefer to do over the net is my own personal judgment and this may be likened to another or differ largely. Anyways, each one is unique in judgement 🙂

Happy Shopping…. # Internet Shopping#

# WirelessSafety

Wireless Network technologies provide a wide range of opportunities for individuals as well as organizations to grow and ultimately expand its business and operations. In these times of narrower global market with the advent of technology, it brings about a number of advantages such as: 1. Accessibility to customers; 2. Wider Market Base; 3. Real-time update of customer towards the products and services offered by an individual and or organizations.

The organization within which I am involved can take advantage of these opportunities through enhanced customer-friendly interactive sites, offering avenues for customer to order products from the Company, easy-access on the Company’s profile for employee attraction as well as survey sites for customers to give feedback about the company’s products and services.

Certain guidelines and standards should be in place to ensure safe usage of wireless networks. Such guidelines should include: 1. Limitations on sites wherein the viewer can navigate; 2. Payment system with accredited bank is secured and 3. Password security is high.

Such guidelines and standards are necessary for a secured wireless network technology for an organization.

With such, an Organization can truly benefit from the high technological advancements in today’s global economy and in taking advantage of such it can best boost its Organizations’ growth and expansion, as well as its profitability and income.

IT Outsourcing

In these times wherein organizations want to pursue core competency excellence, it is but necessary to outsource IT security. In view of such, organizations should be careful in putting into writing stipulations necessary to protect the Company in terms of systems confidentiality and company’s thrusts for its growth and expansion. Such stipulations should include sub-contractors allowable for the organizations, the prescriptive clause for the outsourcing, grounds for termination of services, penalty for breach of contract as well as the scope of organizations operations within which IT security is applicable.
