The philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer or even Lord Buddha from whom he was greatly influenced, were accused of being pessimist. But in reality, they are just realistic persons who see and accept things as they truly are.The difference between the pessimist and the optimist is just like in a situation in which they see a bottle half-filled with water :The pessimist will say it is half empty(of water) whereas the optimist will say is half full(of water). So the pessimist tend to see the worst or bad aspect of things or believe worst things will happen where as the optimist tend to see the good aspect of things and is hopeful or even confident about the future.
Here are the thoughts of Arthur Schopenauer about existence:
Schopenhauer believed that life is inherently suffering, and that our existence is marked by pain, frustration, and disappointment. He argued that the fundamental driving force behind all living beings is the ”will to life”(the will to live),a primal urge to survive and reproduce. However, this will is blind, irrational, and ultimately leads to suffering.Schopenhauer claimed that our perception of life(existence) as meaningful and fulfilling is an illusion. He believed that we must recognize this illusion and reject the will to live in order to find peace.According to Schopenhauer, the only way to escape suffering is to deny the will to live, which means rejecting our desires, ambitions, and attachments.
