Looking back to Christmas

I feel much happier this Christmas if I compared with myself during last few years…as I finished my long term projects. I passed the exams for my Level 3 qualification in Early Years, also passed a driving test in the early December ☺️ So now I gradually go back to enjoy my free time for new creations and inspiration.

On Christmas Eve, I baked with my children – they were very enthusiastic about making biscuits with lots of details! I baked melon pan (Japanese sweet buns), and stollen.

For my daughters’ school, I volunteered to draw some signs for the Christmas fair. I haven’t done this before but I enjoyed a lot.

The towns are full of beautiful and creative decorations.

I hope many people had a wonderful Christmas ☺️🎄

Resources for the singing time in the nursery

Children love singing in the nursery. They learn lots of new vocabularies and expressions through singing nursery rhymes, and it’s very important time for them.

We already have these pictures on stones / wooden spoons to let children choose their favourite songs to sing, but a teacher I work with suggested that we need to add more songs. So I decided to make new pictures.

It was fun process to make these, and it was easy to draw this wooden material as paper.

I used pen, acrylic paint, colour pencils and matt varnish on top.

Making Froebel stars

Making Froebel stars has been one of my list I wanted to try. I bought a set of crafts paper that was specifically for making Froebel stars online. I chose one from the brand Folia, as they have selection of beautiful colours. (And I realised that I bought the paper for ‘mini’ version!

With looking instructions, my first Froebel star needed good 30 minutes. I also needed to use crafts tweezers because the threading became gradually tricky when I folded paper too tight. The paper was thin and didn’t go through, so I used a tweezer to pull it from the other side! (I know it is not the proper way.)

But after I made 4 stars, I didn’t have to use tweezers anymore as I stop folding paper too tight 😊

Now I don’t need to see the instructions and I need around 10 minutes for a star. Such a progress!

I would like to try different types of paper to make these next, then thinking about making Christmas decorations. ⭐️

After a while…

Probably nearly 2 years, I have been working hard to achieve my new goal…which was getting Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification. It hasn’t been easy with a full-time job and 2 children, including taking Functional exam level 2 (GCSE) Maths and English, but I finally achieved it :D

I have worked up around 4:30am then studied last 2 years. I don’t have to wake up so early now, but strangely I still wake up around 4am. I try to sleep a bit longer until 5pm, then I thought I would use this early bird habit for my creative work for now.

I installed the app Procreate while ago and I am still trying to find out how to use.. I prefer drawing traditional way, but it’s probably nice to learn new technology… So here is my attempt after a while..

2024

My image of dragon is the dragon from my favorite tv animation in japan. I watched the series every week when I was a child. I haven’t posted anything for a long time as my study for diploma has been intense. I have been feeling lost for a while because drawing is my energy.

I draw the picture on my tablet within 1 hour but I realised I felt much better after that. I should do this even I am busy with children, work and study.

So 2024 is my recovering year from long term absence from creative work. After I finish my diploma this summer, I definitely go back to illustration. Until then, I’m going to draw small illustrations little by little.

Working in the nursery

“Five Little Speckled Frogs”

I realised I haven’t post anything for a long time. I’m still studying for the level 3 Early Years Educator qualification and I missed so much time for my drawing..

Although, I have some opportunities to draw in my job. I mostly draw at home but these tasks make me feel much better :)

“Dear Zoo“

Ceramic coasters

I bought some round coasters and did some experiments with the pottery painting. I used some stickers to put unpainted ceramics directly and paint color over them.

After painted few layers, I removed the stickers carefully..

Then I added some details.

And the results were like this.

I like this one the most. I think the colours worked well. I need more practice and experiment!

Drawing with toddlers

January last year, I started working in the local nursery. I’m a teaching assistant in the 2-3 years old room. For most children, this is the first experience to come to the nursery, or even to the outside world without their families. They were born during the pandemic, so many of them couldn’t go to playgroups.

I didn’t draw any teachers in this picture, but the room I work for usually has 4-5 teachers.

Some toddlers can draw like the girl on the left, but sometimes they find drawing on hands is more interesting! Some children enjoy knock down the pencil stands even more than drawing..

Some children try to draw on their faces. Normally the teachers stop this before they do, but some children hide under the table because they know they would be told off. Other children find this under the table and try to copy them as this looks fun!

Some children still doesn’t understand the concept that we should draw on the paper. Sometimes their drawing continues to the floor. Of course teachers will stop this as soon as they find it, but I found this interesting to see how children learn their outside world — they have to learn so many rules!

The boy happily drawing on the easel.. but very soon another child might try to join and start drawing on his picture. Sharing is very difficult thing to learn for many children especially this age, so probably this boy might be upset and angry, or he might not mind sharing the paper with another child. You never know :)
