Selected poems of Faiz Ahmad Faiz translated by Suparna Majumdar in Bengali

Selected poems of Faiz Ahmad Faiz translated by Suparna Majumdar in Bengali

I am yet to read this book but I have read other works of Suparna and she is a great writer. Very talented. If you know Bengali and love reading quality works in Bengali I am sure you may like it. Because Faiz is one of the greatest shayars and Suparna is a great writer, so, somehow, without reading I can guess that the book must be fantastic, so say those who have read it. The book finally came earlier though I was notified it would come later. The get up is nice and the cover. Then, inside, I was amazed to learn that the author/ translator, Suparna Majumder had been working on it all her life. She started translating Faiz since 1978. I don’t know Urdu well enough to evaluate the authenticity of the translation but I am blown away by the beauty of the poetry. Many short pieces touched my heart deeply. It’s difficult to write them which ones, I mean, in English. Bengali readers who don’t know Urdu would benefit from this book.
The personality of the poet Faiz comes through — how much he loved his country which was cut into India and Pakistan. He was a victim like those people who loved their motherland and fought for its freedom only to be kicked away from their home.
The translator’s dedication and hard work shines through. I will definitely urge you to check this book out. I had no idea who Faiz was and I feel so thankful that I got a chance to read it.

Suparna Majumdar’s interpretation of Faiz Ahmed Faiz’ book of poems depicts her artistic and creative skill sets. She has beautifully interpreted Faiz’ expressions, emotion, and feelings. Given the fact that Faiz’ original poems were in a different language, her work is all the more commendable and noteworthy. Through her in-depth research, Suparna acquired a deep understanding of Faiz, his life, work, and what he stands for, and that is all reflected in her interpretation of the poems. I also like the presentation of the book in both content and cover.

It’s a book per excellence.
Bengalis are always poetry lovers. But have little or no access or understanding of Urdu. This book will open a world to them.

Faiz Ahmed Faiz was one of the best known and beloved Urdu poets of 20th century. Translating poetry in another language is never easy. Suparna Majumdar has managed to do so by taking the poet’s selected works and beautifully rendering those from Urdu to Bengali. It requires not only a mastery of both languages but an inner love and passion for the substance of the poetry.

It is an old book in new package, I think that is alright because the older version did not reach more than a dozen readers. This year my hands are a little tied so I have converted two of my favorite books as Agnidal and Sfulingo. This book contains Spirits of darkness, spirits of light and few more stories, all fantasy or supernatural, hope you will enjoy them.

Sharmishtha’s stories are captivating. Her characters although purely original bring some of India’s mythological creatures to light with a style of writing that can only be attributed to that of a true mistress of story-telling. Nothing is what it seems as each incredible tale keeps you wondering what is going to happen next with endings that are in no way predictable. A thoroughly enjoyable read!

A good read, be it a dark night or brightly lit afternoon! January 14, 2015
Ms. Basu has in this book, a compelling portrayal of supernatural beings both benign and malignant. Here, she shows her skill in writing tales on the paranormal beings of India and the mortal characters who interact with these creatures as well. Very enjoyable!

It is an old book of mine that I am republishing as Agnidal, it contains some spooky stories. One of them is one of my favorites amongst my writings, “The black mist” I quite enjoyed writing this story about a vengeful witch and her demons. There are other stories about wronged spirits and human beings. Hope you will enjoy this old wine in new bottle!

Hoping to share some pieces from both of the books. Keeping my fingers crossed!
