A big happy april fools to everyone. I’m not doing a gag because I just woke up, and I haven’t planned anything.

I should have had yesterday off, but I decided to take a co-worker’s shift to let her do an early easter with her family. I’m such a friggin softie. So, of course, an hour before we close a huge project turns up that we have to get done before close. Why wouldn’t it? Plus, when I get in today I’m facing two more projects, unless more turn up.

People in our office love to pile projects in on the weekends when only two of us work, beg and plead it be finished that day, but then complain to our boss when we make small mistakes because we’ve rushed it for them, instead of just having us change it. That does so get on my nerves. We shouldn’t make mistakes, but we shouldn’t have to do two times the projects of a weekday with two hours less to do it. rargh.

On top of that, if we work 5 hours we are supposed to take a 30 minute break, with only two of us working. Yeah, right. We’re not allowed to have one person working the office, but they expect us to give up 30 minutes of paid time, out of an already pathetic shift. No.

On a more pleasant subject , I finally purchased One Skein for myself (which had to sit in my bag unread all through work), as well as the accompanying yarn to make the cupcakes in it. I already have a list of things I am planning to make after the blanket is finished. The problem with the blanket is I need a good quiet stretch of time to sit down and concentrate. Why do I like lace so much? It’s too pretty for me *not* to knit.

Well, time to get a start on the cupcake before work.

Stormy

Well, my co-worker’s grand baby has been born, she was induced yesterday, which means I really have to get a move on on this blanket.

I am doing a blanket patterned with Elfin Lace from Barbara Walker’s first treasury. I think I will crochet some kind of edging, although I haven’t decided quite yet.

It was 80 degrees yesterday, so I thought some kind of lace would be appropriate.

It is a disgusting day, and I agreed to take a co-worker’s hours. I’m such a sucker.

Blue Moon

The new Harry Potter cover has been revealed! In order not to spoil it for people who don’t want to see (you nutcases, you) I have placed it in a link that will open in a new window.

Deathly Hallows Cover (the whole thing): dd_potterwrapcover194.jpg

(This picture is of course copyright Scholastic and the lovely person who does them, whose name currently escapes me, who it turns out is Mary Grandpre.)

I haven’t been all that enthused about the new book coming out. If Rowling follows her generally formulaic ( I do not mean this in a bad way, but it is) plot sequence as I expect it will still be a good read but not perhaps, surprising. Hopefully she can pull out the genius again, though.

Also, to be clear: Harry’s scar is not a horcrux. It is not a horcrux because nobody died, and horcruxes are created by murder, not the intent of murder. It is the act of killing that tears the soul and as neither of them died, Harry’s scar cannot logically be a horcrux, now can it? Still, even that can change if it’s needed.

Here’s hoping Draco makes a swift turn around and doesn’t die saving Hermione’s skin, and Harry makes it through okay as well. One can always hope.

Booty Bay

My blood elf paladin is allllmost 34. Hubby is sleeping and I’m relying on him to help me for the last few bubbles of the experience bar. Then it’s only one level to 35, and then only 5 levels to 40 and a free mount! Plus all that lovely grouping experience!

It’s bloody cold in my apartment, so I went trolling for a sweater pattern to purchase and to knit (like I don’t have 2 other projects-what am I thinking!) and I’m coming up a little short. I have selected a coulple of front runners:

Viveka Totally cute sweater. The recommended yarn is produced by the designer (a slightly shameless shill?) and goes for $13 a pop. I will need 11 balls so I shall be purchasing from somewhere else.

Simple Knitted Bodice So freaking adorable, but I’d have to wear a shirt under it.

I will probably just rubbish any pattern I find anyway. I like large sleeves and a deep v  neck so SKB is closest to my plan. Hungry now..must go hunting a baloney sandwich.

Desolace

My co-wroker is going to be grandma in one week, and she has no blanket for the baby when  he/she comes to visit!

Luckily on my lunch-break I bought a Pound of Love for just such an occasion in a minty green, which it turns out is the color of the baby’s room at Grandma’s house.

But, as usual, I am having issues. I was a good girl and did a swatch of my pattern in the yarn, on the needles I was going to use for the blanket. I had originally swatched two repeats of a diamond brocade which came out to 18 sts=3.5″. That made 5 sts=1″, so I took 5 sts x 24″= 120 stitches. Add 1 for the repeat to work, and add 6 for an edging, we get 127 sts so about 25″ right? Wrong! It ended up being closer to 34″. Crackers!

Looking at my swatch, I swatched tighter than I ended up knitting in the blanket. Apparently quite a bit tighter. Of course I worked all day today and I’m pretty tired. Also I managed to mess up the repeat on the third row by purling instead of knitting and I had enough, so I ripped it out.

I ordered Barbara Walker’s first treasury nearly a week ago, and I’m hoping it will arrive tomorrow. When it finally gets here I’ll spend some time picking out a pattern that’s a little more regular, and try and chill out with this blanket. The baby could be induced next week though, so I have to work fast!

I did as instructed in the new Sticks and String podcast and knit in public today. I whipped out my brand new circulars and baby yarn and knit a swatch in garter in Subway. It felt good. Everyone should know the joys of knitting.

Gah!

Okay, so my scarf is not going well. I have frogged it about ten times, and I think it’s time for a break. But I can’t stop coveting that malabrigo.

I am going to try to put the lace lines on different numbered notecards, because on paper my eye skips and I start knitting line seven  halfway across line five. The problem is I can’t find any notecards. I know I had some a week ago, and I can’t go ferreting around too loudly as Hubby is still sleeping, so really, it’s a good time for a break.

The new Skeptoid is out, with an excellent explanation of homeopathic remedies and why they won’t work, if in fact they are truly homeopathic. Many products are labeled homepathic are not truly homeopathic (that is, the active ingedient is ridiculously diluted) and often can work, but may be hazardous. It’s a good listen and an excellent explanation.

I forgot to mention yesterday that the new Skepticality is (finally) out! I wish Derek and Swoopy could update every week, but they do have terribly busy lives.

Do Overs

For my birthday, hubby got me two lovely skeins of malabrigo-my very first skeins of malabrigo! Squee! To his credit, Hubby did offer to buy me more, but these two will do me for a while. My mom’s skein is a dusky pink with brown, and mine is vibrant and varied greens.

I decided that this was the perfect yarn to try a scarf I have seen on Knitty. I have attempted a couple of times to start Branching Out but I keep messing it up. The most recent incarnation (the third) I cast on around 11 pm, and managed to complete an entire pattern repeat before I realize that I had cast on two too many stitches at the start, which buggered me up later on. It turns out I have to knit lace in a very quiet room with no cats or husbands to distract me.

I did take a picture of it before I messed it up. Hopefully it will be back to this state sometime in the next hour. I have to say my camera cannot capture colors properly unless it is the middle of the day. The flash washes things out, and my apartment is so terribly lit. The colors are not quite this deep, but I think this gives the idea.

I guess it’s time to start knitting again while Hubby is asleep (he works nights). Wish me luck!

Podcrush

I have found a new podcrush- Sticks and String. An Australian teacher, male nonetheless, talks about knitting, life, and reads an essay every week. It’s only on week 16 but it is great and the more people who listen, the better it will get. My regular knitting podcrush is Lime and Violet whom I adore also. They make me laugh embarassingly loud in public places.

Anyway, I was looking for a new podcast to take to the gym and I stumbled upon S&S, which I enjoyed during my half hour work out (12.5 miles biked!) and hour of grocery shopping.  It really made my shopping trip enjoyable.

When I got home I made a small shepard’s pie that turned out nicely, and now I want to fall asleep. However, I have to work from 4-7 today so no nap for me.

Squee!

Haven’t had a lot to blog about lately, but my mum is finally home from England!

She brought back with her a friend and bunches of junk food for me and hubby. I love having English junk food around, even if I don’t eat it I know I could, unlike the rest of the past three years where it wasn’t even available for purchase except at outrageous prices.

She also bought me a gorgeous scarf from Burberry in London. The scarf has the classic Burberry plaid in blues and a gray on one side, and a really snazzy bright blue with navy pinstripes on the other side. I’m wearing it right now and I probably won’t take it off until forced to.

As for knitting, I am currently learning to knit continental fashion. After learning how to knit socks toe-up from Knitty.com, I found that the English fashion makes me strain my hands to do it tightly enough so I’m attempting continental. I am confident about the knit stitch, but am a bit pensive about the purl stitch.

However, I am surrounded by mounds of sweets so that’s not happening today.

I finally have an idea for a page that will make me a million dollars. Okay, it won’t make a million dollars, but it might get a few clicks. It’s called WoW and knitting, because I often try to do both at once. I have a couple of ideas, so I’ll start it up soon.

A young lady at my husband’s work is getting ready to have a baby in April. She is my age and kind of scared. A couple of months ago I made her a baby blanket. Unfortunately I hadn’t thought about her baby shower until I asked about it, at which point it had already taken place. I was browsing for a knitted gift for my co-worker, and came across this lovely pattern.

Best Bunny By Lion Brand-Crocheted

I followed the pattern crochet-wise, but I did do the face a little differently. Here is a picture. I made a pompom for the tail.
