How can girls love girls be accepted in Cambodia?

Being Homosexual Women and Respecting Family’s Values in Cambodia!

How to come out safer to family for lesbian, bisexual women and transgendermen?
a. Most of LBT has a big trouble of coming out compare to Gaymen
It means LBT were born to be a woman in society.. not to be different from that. So social culture esp. family values have been used to treat LBT women to NOT SPEAK OUT, to respect OTHERs (and abuse themselves), to not use their 5 senses and let others orer them to do this and that.
b. For those who wish to come out and their parents will accept them the most are:
1. Study hard and work hard to be their independence, can live themselves and make decision by themselves.
2. Study about their family’s values as much as they can, esp. identify their family values’ weakness and strength then will find how ot talk to their parents and sibling and relatives in effective ways.
3. Identify who are the big influence surround their family, sometimes parents respect monks (religous) that LBT need to go to find monks’support, sometimes parents ‘friends will be the great person to talk too, sometimes commune leaders/police will be the best influence, and many times old people in village will be the best to talk to, that they will bring your feelings and words to tell your family.
c. Finally, LBT has to gathering regularly to share each other experience, support each other, advocate in family, village, commune, national and international level to prove to the country that Values of Family is made for better life.. but not to kills daughters! and we have many ways to do so.. one example is here to use technology and internet to make that change happened!
Example: One lesbian was arrested under kidnapping in human trafficking law in Takeo province in 2013. Police was understanding that law can’t stop girl to love girl, but police use cultural norm and family’ value to punish two girls to live together!
2014 November a lesbian was forced to marry to protect family’s face which lead the lesbian to be sad and forced to have sex with her male husband.

LBT

Lesbian and bisexual women stand up to protect their rights

In the world people always make ways to talk, listen, see and communicate each other.
Since technology was brought into the Kingdom, many women and girls include lesbian, bisexual women, and transgender man open their eyes, and ears very widely.
What have they used the technology to prove their simple and beautiful life????
a. They start to share their problem, solutions, challenges, and many secret story through social media.
b. They also many time use the technology to advocate for their real human rights and justice to support their living…
c. Many girls have stood up to advocate for others as well.
d. Due there are many cultural taboo, many girls have worked very hard to open the cultural taboo doors to accept them to be WHO THEY ARE.

Sad but powerful to stand up!
Inspiration and heroism lead young girls, women, LBT and other groups of young people to connect and fight for their value of living in the earth.

Social Media Booms Cultural Taboo in Cambodia

Traditional treatment for Khmer citizens who are over 40 years old have controlled ways of thinking and acting to be quiet and shy to show their expression which is called culture and tradition. Parents always expect their children are doing good. Goodness means children have to follow parents’ advice and ideas. Most of time, parents forget that human being has different brain to analyze the same things in different ways! What parents want is CHILDREN’s happiness, so parents have always given up their willing to ensure children are going to be happy.

Early 2000s the internet arrived have changed mind set of Cambodian young people who were born after 1990s to work on their ways where they can express their life struggle but also talented actions and thoughts they have through social media include facebook, line, twitter and other internet tool- blog, youtube… ect.

The biggest changes are Khmer people start to talk to each other very openly to support and protect each other, sharing all information with evidence, many have used their social media to build group to support their society as well as advocate for policy change aim to government to take their responsibility of their mistakes.

“I have used my blog connect with other social media tools to inform to my friends and many articles i wrote is to journalists and policy makers to make more attention of inhumanity and natural destructive”, a young blogger told.

Many old people are now trust social media rather than mass media as they understand that all TV, Radio and Local News are influenced and pressured by politics. Though parents always go to their children’s and asked for updating esp. the very sensitive issues.

Being a hero at your community

Pheung Sophat

Teacher Pheung Sophat and Me

Today meeting several people in a high school name Chub Vari located in  Presh Net Presh district, Bantey Meanchey province.

Hero is defined base on actions and thoughts of individual person.

I met a hero given from my personal observation as he has done many great jobs and invest his life to serve people to sharpen their brain. Mr Pheung Sophat a principle of the Chub Vari high school has led his colleagues and students to be more flexible and practical of using life to build the country. Each teacher has their own mind set of nationalism.

What i have learned from Lork Krou Sophat today:

a. Be more practical and flexible rather than look at your policy and laws. Eg. students are poor they need home and food for survive, so we do not need to punish them of absence.

b. Be a leader of peace rather than war because you are finally work and live with people. Eg. As principle of school teachers have done their best and all make a lots of mistakes or sometimes cheating their schedule because they also need to survive and support their family. So we need to sit and let them understand what you think and let you understand them both professional and personal life.

Being Hero was born in each life, yet many people do not know how to bring their soul out of their thought.

Being famous of ourselves is more than enough.

Being gay is not wrong

Fri, 16 November 2012

Many communities in the United States have embraced the lifestyles of gays and lesbians.

The Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival & Parade has become the third largest in the US, attracting more than 75,000 participants over the two-day celebration in California.

Maine, Maryland and Washington legalised gay marriage in last week’s election, becoming the first US states to do so through popular vote rather than court or legislative action.

Gay marriage is now legal in nine states and the District of Columbia.

A rapid shift in public opinion is supporting their cause as more people grow used to the idea of gay marriage, but this is still a contested issue, as evangelical Christians and the Roman Catholic Church have vowed to fight against gay marriage.

A gay man or a lesbian woman is someone whose primary sexual preference is for a member of his or her own sex.

Much of the discrimination towards gay people is based on the myths people believe about them. For example: AIDS is a gay disease. AIDS is caused by a virus and viruses infect all kinds of people, regardless of their sexual orientation.

Another example: gays and lesbians are mentally ill.

In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association stated that homosexuality was not a mental disorder, and in 1990, the World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder.

Cambodian law states that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are entitled to all of the same rights as other individuals. Gay marriage is prohibited. The human rights law is tolerant of male homosexual behaviour provided it does not affect the traditional family structure.

There is pressure in Cambodian society to marry and have children, which adds to the difficulties gay men face in trying to hide their sexuality.

In Phnom Penh, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community has been more open and visible. Since 2003, the LGBT Pride Parade is a yearly event that celebrates gay pride.

Popular gay bars like Blue Chilli and Rainbow have attracted the LGBT community to engage socially and publicly. Another avenue is online, like Facebook, where the initial communication starts. But those from rural areas are often discriminated against, threatened and have their human rights violated.

Cambodian Center for Human Rights’ Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) project aims to empower LGBT Cambodians by providing information and coordination to allow groups and individuals to network effectively, provide training for documenting instances of abuse occurring, and support in advocating for the recognition of the fact that LGBT people have the same human rights as everyone else.

I had lunch with a young man who told me his story about coming out as a gay Cambodian. He was disowned by his family and was forced to live on the streets and survive on his own.

Drifting away from the people he loved was scarier than the fact he was gay. But he endured, and now is educating others through his experience, and believes that the best way to eliminate homophobia is to dispel ignorance on sexuality.

We should look for the good in everyone we meet and respect their journey, as well as their sexual preference.

Be your philosopher

People were born as creators. Everyone was born with body and brain while body is moved by brain. Some people said man is good in using left brain while woman is good in using right one and when gay people are good in using both left and right.

Actually all people in the world are smart as long as they have their own thoughts and try to follow theirs. When they feel their thoughts are wrong and understand others’ are right. It means they never trust who they are, they never think their brain is useful.

To trust your own selves, you have to use whatever you have thought called philosophy!
