Sa Wakas

(A bit late because, well, it’s been a while since I last blogged. Not sure if I still got it haha. Chauze. Tsk, tsk. The things that make me go blog again. This has been on my drafts since last week; had guts to post them only now. The longer I stay in this business, the more I become not so sure of my blogging skillz. Or something like that. But I had so many #feelz about this one that I can’t not write about it.)

Sa wakas can mean two things. Finally or In the end, both of which apply to the play “Sa Wakas,” which I had the fortune to see last April 21. Nagsimula ang lahat sa wakas, therefore, means It all began finally or It all began in the end.

I love Death Cab for Cutie

Red wine and cigarettes/Hide your bad habits underneath the patio (Death Cab, “405”)

I love Death Cab for Cutie, I really do. They are one of my most favorite bands of all time. At one point in my life they were THE most favorite of all time.

So when I heard they were coming to the Philippines my initial reaction was that of shock. I really couldn’t believe they were doing it. Bigger bands, smaller bands — practically everyone has come here, except them. And just when I thought it’s not gonna happen anymore, the news came out: Death Cab for Cutie live in Manila March 5!

Not that I’ve been waiting for them all this time. I came to know of DCFC way back, probably in 2003, when I was working at then rock radio NU107 (tears). Heard more of their songs, became a fan, became a hardcore fan, became a fan who memorized their albums and the lyrics to their songs. I was a huge sap then (and a little heartbroken).

No Other Review

(This is an old entry, written October last year. For some reason it remained in the drafts folder and I completely forgot about it. Sayang naman ang pinagpaguran ko. Haha. Haha. Ha. Anyway. Did this for the lulz, because I was very much amused by the film. So here it is, my take on Star Cinema’s “No Other Woman.”)

How do I even begin to write a review of “No Other Woman”? First off, I’m not married nor involved in any affair of sorts. Second, I am no cineaste.

So wait. This is not a review after all. Let us, instead, call this a fan-gushing. Yes you guys. What you’re about to read might be the most biased “review” on the film ever.

God only knows

If you should ever leave me, well life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me, so what good would living do me
God only knows what I’d be without you

I wonder how many people do this every day. You know, people with broken hearts. We don’t notice them enough. Maybe if we do, we’ll see that their eyes look a bit tired. From crying, perhaps. Too many sleepless nights. If we just look closer, we’ll see there’s no spring in their step. They walk slower than most people during rush hour, on the MRT. The traffic outside is horrible and yet they couldn’t care less if they’re late, or if they arrive at all. They just want this day to be over and done with.

It’s like someone took the life out of them. Which is most likely the case. Brokenhearted people. We don’t notice them enough. They exist. They’re real. They’re everywhere. They’re here.

Lazy for feeling so lonely

Apologies to Patsy Cline for the lazy title.

Because I am lazy, here is my top 10 of the week:

Zombadings. Finally saw this film. All I can say is: AWAAARD! The hype is all worth it. If you haven’t seen it yet, what the hell are you waiting for? A zombading invasion?

Best Thing I Never Had. This single by Beyonce is not exactly a favorite, but it’s been in my head for a few days now. (Oh, I don’t relate, by the way.) Maybe it’s … her lungs. Gad those pipes are powerful.

Nestle’s Butterfinger ice cream. Evil and dangerous, but I need my endorphin fix.

Cheetos Jalapeno. Paired with Butterfinger ice cream, this makes for the best balanced diet in the history of balanced diets.

Dreams, hopes and aspirations. Most likely mean the same thing. It is amazing how years go by and they never change; also amazing is how we never tire of talking about them, hoping one day they’d come true, and feeling everything will be all right. ♥

Normal is the watchword

You’d think it’d be easier to write when you have so many thoughts, especially when they have kept you awake for quite a number of days. The truth is, no matter how long (and how much, or should it be how less?) you’ve been doing it, it never gets easier. Translate that to:

The truth is, no matter how long you’ve been here, it really doesn’t feel like you should be. But you don’t know where to go, either. Or you do, and you’ve tried, some time ago, to be where you think you ought to be. And it didn’t work.

Some days you blame yourself for letting some chances go, but most days you’re thankful to be where you are, because the truth is, you wouldn’t be what or where you are right now if it wasn’t for the choices you made back then. And most of what/where you are right now, honestly, is good.

* * *

It’s just that there are days I feel like dying. The feeling trumps everything.

‘Kasambuhay Habambuhay’

In celebration of its 100 years in the country, food company Nestle produced an anthology of 10 short films which featured 10 of its products. Entitled “Kasambuhay Habambuhay,” the anthology was recently shown in several cinemas nationwide.

I consider myself lucky to be one of those who caught the anthology’s short run in the cinemas because the films were good. I’m not a fan of product placements in films but here, the products are an important part of the story such that it would have less impact if they were to be taken out.

Life or something like it

I did say I was going to update this blog every day, right? Well I. am. sorry. Blame it on my tendency to, well, blurt out things. Not when it matters, though. This is, after all, just a blog. Besides, it’s only been a month since the last update. I’d like to think that my not being able to write here as frequently as I want to means I have a life. Or something like it.

How to love

See you had a lot of crooks tryna steal your heart
Never really had luck, couldn’t never figure out
How to love, how to love

This track by Lil Wayne is, well, love.

I like how my taste in music (or the lack of it) is evolving these days. It’s more “radio-friendly” now. There was a time when I used to shun anything pop and RnB, back when I was of the thinking that contemporary music has to be strictly defined by genres. These days, I’m not even sure there are still “genres.” It’s like there’s just good music, and there’s not-so-good. I’m not really the type to diss certain kinds of music I don’t like because music is art — it’s subjective. What may be good for me may not be the same for others and so on. So I’m just going to say that it’s good we all get to listen to different kinds of music, and that I appreciate all kinds of efforts in making them. Efforts always count for something.

So here you go, something by Lil Wayne, something that will — I hope — tug at your heartstrings. Now go kiss someone.
