ANF: Syrian Democratic Council: There is a threat of a return to ISIS terrorism

The MSD warned of the danger of a return to terrorism following the release of ISIS gangs.

  •  Tuesday, 20 January 2026, 09:00

The Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) issued a statement warning of the danger of a return to ISIS terrorism.
The statement said: “The regions of Northeast Syria are witnessing a dangerous escalation marked by attacks carried out by radical armed factions operating under the umbrella of the transitional government. These attacks target the Kurdish people and their forces, who were at the forefront of the fight against ISIS and played a decisive role in its defeat.

The execution of fighters from the Women’s Protection Units after their capture, along with the release of ISIS militants, constitutes a reproduction of terrorism and poses a direct threat to regional and international security. Such actions raise serious concerns about the possibility of new massacres similar to those committed against Alawites, Druze, and Kurds in Aleppo.”

The statement added: “Today, the city of Kobanê is facing a direct threat. Kobanê stands as a global symbol of resistance against ISIS and marks the beginning of its collapse. Any attack on Kobanê constitutes a violation of democratic values, freedom, and the will of free peoples in Syria, the region, and the world. It also represents an act of retaliation against those who defeated terrorism.

The targeting of Kobanê cannot be separated from the broader targeting of northeastern Syria in all its diversity, including Arabs, Kurds, Syriacs, and Assyrians. This exclusionary assault seeks to undermine coexistence and prevent the emergence of a free and democratic Syria.”

ANF: SDF: Any forced displacement of civilians under threat of force by Damascus constitutes a war crime

SDF calls for international action against the disruption of civilian movement in the Deir Hafer area, warning against the forced displacement of more than 170,000 civilians.

The Media Center of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) released a statement categorically dening the claims issued by the “Ministry of Defense” in Damascus regarding preventing civilians from fleeing the city of Deir Hafer.

“We affirm that the disruption of civilian movement in the area is a result of the military escalation, troop buildup, and ongoing bombardment carried out by Damascus factions. This same entity officially acknowledged the closure of all crossings with areas of North and East Syria, as stated in a declaration issued on January 6th, thus exposing the clear contradiction in their narrative,” the statement said.

The SDF emphasized that any forced displacement of civilians under threat of force by Damascus constitutes a war crime under the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Rome Statute, which prohibit targeting civilians and terrorizing them, and criminalize any acts aimed at forcibly displacing them.

The SDF called upon the international community, the United Nations, and human rights organizations to “condemn these dangerous tactics, which could lead to the displacement of more than 170,000 civilians, especially given the harsh weather conditions.”
