Lens Artists Challenge #380: What’s Around the Corner
Posted: January 15, 2026 in Lens-Artist Photo ChallengeTags: Arizona, Lens Artist CHallenge #380, Lens Artists, Lens Artists Challenge, What's Around the Corner
I’ve never taken my phone or camera out without using one or, sometimes, both. For the Lens Artists Challenge this week, Anne want to see what we see when we walk in our neighborhood or around a corner in some neighborhood. I’m up for that. In fact, I’m up much earlier than dawn this time of year! As soon there’s a bit of light in the sky, I’m out and walking. Get your shoes on and wear a layer or two. Desert or not, it’s chilly this morning, thank goodness!
We live in a gated community with two golf courses, in the house, extensively remodeled, that my parents lived in for over 30 years I quite like having a section of one golf course behind our house, some green grass and palm trees maintained by someone else, making a restful view from the back patio. The cart paths provide walking trails while allowing the illusion that I’m in nature, which I am, albeit curated nature. Here’s a lovely dawn view and, if you look closely, you’ll see a fountain in the lake. Ducks and other birds enjoy the lakes.

Several geese enjoyed another lake.

It’s getting lighter now and there are real trees lining the path.

Desert plants, of course, pretty but ready to make you pay if you get to close!

A plethora of palm trees.

Lots of people have citrus trees, although the quality of the fruit varies. Since it’s a 55-and-older community, the irony is that a number of people take medications that don’t go with grapefruit, so we often see bags of grapefruit out for the taking. I love them, my husband can’t have them.

Back home. Our giant bougainvillea is in need of a serious trim, which I plan to give it this weekend. The poor cactus next to it is getting overwhelmed. A ladder’s required for me to reach the top branches while also trying to avoid the many thorns hidden among the beautiful flowers. Last time, I had to use a rake to pull the top branches over so I could cut them. 🙂

Thanks for coming along on my walk. You may now go back to bed if you like or eat a hearty breakfast, secure in the knowledge that you’ve burned off a number of virtual calories. 🙂

What did you do today?
Posted: January 9, 2026 in PersonalTags: personal, a day in the life, what did you do today, a sentence a day
I have a small book designed for recording a sentence a day. However, I often find at the end of the day, I pick up my pen and wonder, “What did I do today?”
Looking at the blog title, I realize it sounds more like the title of a mystery, the type where unbeknownst to you an unknown someone is watching you, sending you anonymous emails or texts, and you have no idea who or why. (Or do you?) I did just finish the recent Harlan Coben book, Hold Tight, which had some of this type of thing, but trust me, if anyone in that book had to write down what s/he did that day, it would have been memorable, although maybe not be something s/he would want to trust to paper.
Anyway..today. I slept in. It was almost six when I woke from a solid night’s sleep. Shower, devotions, Norwegian lessons on Duolingo (and I thought French had too many unused letters), breakfast, husband off for his targeted radiation (two weeks left after today, Friday), then off to Costco to return several items and buy some necessities. (As I’m writing this on Thursday to go live Friday morning, the title should probably be “What did you do yesterday.”) Ahh, well.

Started a pot of split pea soup with the meaty ham hock from our Christmas ham and, since it takes about 4 hours all told, I had time to begin getting rid of some of the over 450 open tabs on my iPhone. Don’t judge!! Lots are recipes, which I should just delete, as they’ve been sitting there for who knows how long. But when I see the title, each one looks appealing, so there they sit. I went instead for lower-hanging fruit: recording restaurants we might like to try, as well as locations in Arizona and Wyoming that we might want to visit, then deleting the pages. I’m now down to almost 350, although still wondering about the recipes and without enough room to download the latest software update, which I should have for security reasons. That’s going to take moving photos off my phone. I have over…well, I’ll just say too many. No need to give away all my disorganization secrets.
Worked on putting out some pieces for our next puzzle, enjoyed much-appreciated rain, finished the soup, read that new Coban book, heated up soup for dinner, and got ready for a marriage workshop at church tonight. Now I’m asking you, “What did you do today?”
