Bread, Salaries and the Struggle to Survive in Ghana

This morning, my friend Bright and I were talking about the exchange rate between the Ghana cedi and the South African rand. He had seen in the news that 1 Rand is less than 1 Cedi, and he wanted me, a random immigrant, to confirm it because, obviously, I know better (I jest, but there… Continue reading Bread, Salaries and the Struggle to Survive in Ghana

Do We Really Need To?

We often think we must understand why people do what they do. Curiously, we tend to do this when we don’t agree with the actions of other people. We rarely ask ourselves why people do what they do when we agree with what they do. We think that if we somehow are able to marry the reasons people give with our principles and ideas and knowledge about the world and what we think is right and wrong, then we would understand them. The reality is often the opposite.

Everything Sucks

Many times in the past two years, I have felt stuck in moments that felt like the worst times of my life. My saving grace in these moments has been the thought that things could not get any worse, that the only way was up.

A Harmattan Soliloquy

I read a description of the harmattan winds that calls them “cool, dry winds”. It makes harmattan seem almost benign, like a cool breeze one enjoys on an evening out on the beach. It is anything but.

Lactose Intolerant

So I’m lactose intolerant. This isn’t a big deal to most people. Chances are if you’re reading this, you probably know if you are lactose intolerant or not. According to Pubmed, 75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant. Like I said, no big deal. Except….it is for me cos I just found out. I’ve… Continue reading Lactose Intolerant

I think I had an anxiety attack

I think I had an anxiety attack last week. I had just been given a task I had requested when I suddenly developed this feeling of intense panic. I felt unworthy. My chest began to constrict. I wished I could stop time just for a second, just enough for to take a breath that seemed just out of reach.

A Long Overdue Update

I haven’t updated my blog in a while. I was going to say I haven’t written in while, but it occurred to me that I have, for people and for other websites. But it feels like all of those are nothing when I look back to the last time I updated this blog; almost as… Continue reading A Long Overdue Update

Senior Year Chronicles: A Chapter Ends

I had my final year project defense on Wednesday. The thought hasn’t sunk in yet. I know I have done it. But I am yet to deal with the ramifications of the whole process. Instead, I have taken to recalling anecdotes of the past few years I’ve spent at school. After the last paper my… Continue reading Senior Year Chronicles: A Chapter Ends

What About The Seeds?

I was 12 or 13 the first time I took watermelon. It was at school. The new school management had decided to improve the quality of our food. Fruits were added to the diet. The variety increased. A bit. I don’t know about the quality though. Pity they couldn’t have paid more attention instead to… Continue reading What About The Seeds?

WORDS

I have been thinking about words lately. About how much power they have: to empower or dishearten; spread happiness or despair; create or destroy. I have also been thinking how often times, like a child who doesn’t know the difference between a knife and a piece of plastic toy, we wield our words carelessly especially… Continue reading WORDS
