Ken and I took a walk through Vukovar on our own after lunch. It looks peaceful enough now, but in the early 1990s it became one of the fiercest symbols of the Croatian War of Independence, enduring a brutal siege that rearranged both its skyline and its soul. It’s been 30 years, but evidence of the war (bullet and shell ridden buildings) is still everywhere. Memory here isn’t optional – it’s part of the infrastructure. It has a reputation as both a celebratory drink, and a medicinal cure-all. Hungarian grandmothers swear it can fix anything from a sore throat to a broken heart. Pálinka is a clear, extremely potent, schnaps-like drink, distilled from various tree fruits. The iconic Hungarian version is plum, or szilva. But Hungarians will make pálinka from just about any fruit that grows on a tree (apricots, pears, and cherries, quince). #Palinka #HungarianDrinks #Hungary🇭🇺 #Budapest #NationalDrink #FruitBrandy #Schnapps #DrinkLocal #TraditionalSpirits #EasternEuropeanDrinks #AlcoholCulture #CulturalDrinks #TravelDrinks #WhatToDrink #LocalSpirits #DrinkHistory #SpiritCulture #EuropeanSpirits #PlumBrandy #Szilva #TasteOfHungary This is what you came for. Tokaji Aszú is one of the world’s great sweet wines, possibly the greatest, as long as you are not asking a Frenchman (who will say Sauternes) or a German (who will say Trokenbeerenauslese). The grapes have been affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which sounds like something you’d need antibiotics for, but is actually a magical fungus that turns grapes into concentrated drops of honeyed brilliance. #TokajiAszu #HungarianWine #SweetWine #DessertWine #NobleRot #Botrytis #WineNerd #WineEducation #WineCulture #FineWine #WineHistory #OldWorldWine #EuropeanWine #SommelierLife #WineGeek #WineTasting #WineWriting #DrinkBetter #SipWisely #WineTravel #Hungary🇭🇺 #LegendaryWine #LiquidGold #WineFacts New post available - what to drink in Hungary. I visited 19 countries in 2025 - 13 of them new to me. We met a lot of people last year, so decided instead of picking my favorite photos of *things*, I'd post all of the lovely faces we met along the way. Hope you enjoy. #TravelInOurRearviewMirror #TravelReflections #YearInTravel #TravelMemories #LookingBack #2025Travel #TravelJournal #TravelWriting #SlowTravel #Wanderlust #TravelStories #PassportPages #WhereWeWent #TravelRecap #JourneysNotJustDestinations #TravelBlog #TravelLife Short organ concert at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Kalosca. My mom loved organ music, and whenever I hear it played in a centuries old church in Europe, well, I appreciate the time to be alone in my head. I miss my mom every day.
