Bird Of Paradise

This week I’m featuring the bird of paradise using three different painting styles on the same capture with each creating a different look. The inspiration behind these pieces is a single stem bloom of a tropical Bird of Paradise. This plant is grown in abundance in the warmer tropical climates. The actual bloom behind this art print came from a flower garden in Southern California.

The first one is titled Tropical Bird Of Paradise Watercolor. I created this one using a watercolor and drawing technique to highlight the shape and beautiful colors of this floral bloom in a subtle way.

The second one is titled A Bird Of Paradise Bloom. With this one I created it using a defined drawing followed by a simple oil painting technique. This technique starts with strong defined lines to create the outline of the subject matter followed by long oil looking brush strokes to fill in the color. The final result adds texture to the subject matter.

The third one is titled Bird Of Paradise In Abstract Watercolor. I created this one using a watercolor and drawing technique to highlight the shape and beautiful colors of this floral bloom. This one creates a rather abstract approach to display this bloom.

Thoughts? As I have said before, everyone reacts to visual art techniques and looks differently, so I am not in the least offended by opinions.

Sunset to Dusk – Boats in the Harbour

This week I am featuring two photographic captures of a sunset over Victoria Harbour with two fishing boats in the foreground. I love the natural beauty of Victoria, British Columbia especially the harbour. I was walking along the harbour at sunset when these scenes presented themselves.

In this first capture, I love the way the boats and their masts are silhouetted against the golden colors of the sky and the reflections off the harbour.

Sunset and the Boats

This second capture is after the sun has set and as dusk settles in, the sky rewards the setting with a soft glow of colors.

Brucemore Mansion

This week I am sharing one of my black and white sketches of Brucemore Mansion which is a large Victorian Mansion located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The estate is called Brucemore in reference to the Scottish moors from one of the owners ancestral home. It was built in 1884 -1886 and sits on a 26 acre estate, which is now a community cultural center. The house is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. I love the detail of the architectural aspects and setting.

B&W Photography – Pacific Northwest Coastal

These are three black and white photographic art prints from my website. Each one is located on the Pacific Northwest coastal zone.

The first capture is of fishing boats docked during sunset. The setting is Victoria Harbor located in Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island.

The next one is an art print of the coastal surf along the Oregon Coastline as seen from a bluff between two trees. I liked the way the trees framed the capture.

The last one is also from the Oregon coastline. The scene is just off the Pacific Coast Highway and shows the rugged bluffs of the Oregon Coastline with this massive rock outcropping sitting in the surf of the Pacific Ocean.

Architectural Art Prints Created Using Fauvism Technique

In this post I’m featuring five examples of architectural subjects I created using a fauvism oil technique (Fauvism: a style of painting with vivid expressionistic and non-naturalistic use of color that flourished in Paris from 1905). This technique uses abstract shapes and variations of colors to create a unique look

I’ll start with an interior architectural presentation of a sun room. The inspiration behind this is a sitting room in a very large old Victorian home.

Sun Porch

This next print is part of the Heritage Hill District of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The area has many refurbished old mansions brought back to their original glory.

The Wrap Around Porch

Another house from that same district. This particular home was designed by the famous Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867–April 9, 1959). “His architectural style is most famously called organic architecture, which is an all-encompassing philosophy of designing buildings in harmony with humanity and the environment. He also pioneered the Prairie School style, characterized by strong horizontal lines, open floor plans, and integration with the landscape.”

The Blue Geometric Shapes

This next print is an oyster farm on San Juan Island located in the Pacific Northwest. The farm itself is located just outside of Roche Harbor in a protected bay. This old building was being used as a storage facility and a focal point for customers purchasing oysters.

Oyster Hut

This next print is the Hotel De Haro at Roche Harbor located on San Juan Island, Washington. The hotel is the oldest continuous operating hotel in the state.

We Are Never Alone

Even though it seems like it more times then not, that is our weakness speaking. With faith, we understand and accept that we are never alone. It is up to us to recognize that and embrace it. This week, I am posting three art prints that speak to that very issue.

The first one addresses those times we feel like we are and loneliness sets in.

Isolation

The next one addresses those times we take on a challenge that could be overwhelming, but with faith we strive forward to accomplish something difficult.

With Faith

The last one represents those times you pour your heart out and acknowledge that you are not alone, that He always listens.

Love Is Patient and Kind

This week I’m featuring four art prints I created with “Love is Patient and Kind” from Corinthians 13: verses 4-8. It is a well known group of verses from the bible to reiterate what love is. I think it’s a very powerful quote about what true love in daily life and personal interaction with others is all about. My wife and I had this quote on some artwork hanging on a wall our kids always passed coming out of their bedrooms. Reading it daily was always inspirational and motivational for all of us.

Love is Patient

I knew it was a perfect fit as an overlay on this photograph I took of an ocean sunset from our house in San Diego.

Love Never Ends

In this case I liked it with this abstract interpretation of the photographic sunset on the first one.

Love Is Patient: Ocean Palm Trees

This view along the coast in Carlsbad, California (San Diego Metro area) spoke to me in the same way.

Love Is Patient: Hidden Lake

And this one worked on one of my photographs I took of a lake in the Whistler area in British Columbia.
