#edfd460 Imagination and Creativity in Education

How sweet it is to have something worthy to share again. I do hope you enjoy my attempt at this assignment, it was challenging and transformational to make. Definitely worthwhile.

Another Reflection – getting better at this!!!

untitled

What a ride this has been. When I started I really didn’t believe it possible for me to create what I have created. I have learned so much in this unit from Adam and from all of the incredibly generous and intelligent EDFD459ers. I actually found it hard to narrow it down to five as there has been many more, the top five however are;

TECHNOLOGY – so much new technology, so many ideas, so little time. I have definitely been challenged in this area but feel I have learned so much, really didn’t believe 12 weeks ago that I could do what I have done.

REFUGEE CRISIS – a life altering perspective has been born from my research throughout this unit. I am grateful every day that I live in Australia and am much more aware of the plight of refugees. This will stay with me forever. Thank you EDFD 459.

C of P – another new idea which stretched my brain. What a delight it has been to learn about C of P while becoming part of a new one.

LEARNING SPACES – while I was aware of the different learning spaces I had never really put much thought into how or why they worked, if they worked or not or my use of them. Very enlightening.

PERSISTENCE! – this year has been a very difficult one for me personally, I have surprised myself with my persistence and application to study. In the most ridiculous and often stressful learning spaces I have just kept plugging away determined to finish the year. A well deserved glass of wine is due I think. Cheers guys!

A reflection

REFLECTION

It has been a crazy three months for me personally so I am enjoying this opportunity to reflect.

What keeps running through my mind is how individual we all are, and how busy we all are. This unit has highlighted to me the individual nature of us all as learners and as humans, as well as the constant time pressure we face in this 21st century. We all need time to reflect and just be, but I feel that we often don’t get it. What is lost? I think a considerable amount of creative and imaginative ideas go by the wayside at the expense of time pressure.

After finishing my taxonomy I found to my horror that I am the worst offender in not giving myself time to reflect!!! While I was horrified, I also feel enlightened in that I can change this for myself, my own children and my students. The learning curve continues, and impacts on me personally in a really positive way.

Looking forward to more learning, and more reflection.

Roberta’s Taxonomy

  1. Get organised early. Make sure you have all you need to read, think work uninterrupted. Plan ahead and set aside time to work – stick to it.
  2. Enivironment – know what works best for you and how you work best. I am surprised to find after looking through my photos that I get the most work done alone. With a house full of people, kids and visitors I am surprised I get anything done!
  3. Stop and percolate for a day or two. I find this time is often when I will have my light bulb or aha! moment. Then I am literally racing to get back to the computer.
  4. Like Nike says – just do it! Dive right in. I often find by looking through forum posts and discussing with other people I clarify my own thoughts and am then able to start.
  5. Time out – this I always miss. It is such a busy life and it is easy to just keep going. However I feel it really is essential to take time out and reflect on what you have learned, and what you have achieved.
  6. Have a Plan B. This year has tested me like no other. Life can be like that so I now will always have a backup plan for when things don’t go as planned.

Collaborate, cooperate or group?

Initially I thought collaborative and cooperative meant the same thing, I also suspected that curriculum was meant in a broader term. So I felt it was necessary to define each of these terms.

Collaborative – produced by or involving two or more parties working together

Cooperative – involving mutual assistance in working towards a common goal

Curriculum – is broadly defined as the totality of student experiences that occur in the educational process

After pondering the definitions I feel cooperation is essential for collaboration to occur. If participants aren’t cooperating, collaboration becomes very difficult.

As teachers we have a set curriculum as a framework to guide us and ensure our students are meetings the objectives of that document. It is up to us to deliver that content in ways that facilitate learning for our students; this then widens the scope of curriculum and can promote incidental learning about life skills, relationships, equity, etc. A much broader curriculum or learning sequence.

Working with colleagues to create and implement engaging ways to deliver curriculum content requires collaboration and cooperation. The support, ideas and shared workload gained from collaboration is a norm in my experience, and a true high point of being a teacher for me. I have learned so much and my classes have benefited as a result of this collaboration.

Being a part of this learning space is essential for teachers as this is what we do, where we draw inspiration and how we facilitate learning for our students.

Assignment 2 – Beyond the classroom

Development of Communities of Practice beyond the classroom affords meaningful experiential and situated learning for students by their participation in frameworks that have structure. (Smith, 2009) The framework of curriculum is given depth though personal experience when taken beyond the classroom and the structure of a Community of Practice develops, and extends the content from beyond the classroom. Curriculum driven by the students makes for more meaningful learning and collaboration.

Dissonances could occur in this situation when the Community of Practice ‘is weak or exhibits power relationships that seriously inhibit entry and participation.’ (Smith, 2009) This issue can occur in any Community of Practice and is not specific to beyond the classroom.

Are iPads really worth it?

I was astonished to read that many applications ‘are simply drill and practice or focused on delivering content for consumption, not creation or re-use.’ ( Murray & Olcese, 2011) While I love using technology in the classroom I too often feel I could be using it better. The apps I have experienced often make me wonder if the children are actually gaining anything new from using technology, or just going over old ground with a new gizmo?

To best prepare our students for their future we must use technology in our classrooms in meaningful ways. Are we prepared and equipped for this as teachers? Sadly I think we are not. Don’t get me wrong, there are many inspirational teachers doing the most amazing things with technology and sharing their experiences for all of our benefits. However, not all of us are able to follow these trailblazers through lack of knowledge, experience or confidence.

There seems to be a mismatch between what is available and what we want to achieve with our children. A major mind shift is needed in order to align technology with current educational theory as there ‘is a paucity of applications that truly extend capability.’ ( Murray & Olcese, 2011) More development of collaborative software which engages students and can be used to create new content from the children’s own learning is vital to teach 21st century skills.
