Please don’t look at me

As you probably know, last night was Halloween. I’m not sure how I feel about it, but I know I’m happy that it only comes around once a year. (Right? I hear that dogs have no concept of time…)

On the one hand, Willow & I got to have nice walkies around the neighborhood, and we got to see a lot of our friends. And some of them gave us treats. Usually Mom & Dad don’t let us take treats from people, but Halloween must be special. Because Bill & Mike the Boston Terrier gave us nummy hypo allergenic treats and Joe & Nancy gave us Milkbones (SCORE!).

But we had to wear clothes. I don’t think I like wearing clothes. I know Mom is going to put up a picture of me here, so I’m going to make you look at Willow first.

Willow the banana-corgi

Willow the banana-corgi

Yeah, that’s right. They made Willow look like the rare banana-corgi. You don’t see too many of them, and I think there’s a reason why. They’ve been hunted until they’re extinct in the wild. Want to know what else has been embarrassed hunted out of existence? This:

Wiki the corgi-turtle

Wiki the corgi-turtle

Yup, it’s the rarest of the rare – the corgi-turtle. It only comes out once a year (I’m hoping only once in my lifetime!), and if you can spot it, there’s a good chance there’s a piece of candy in it for you.

If you could do me a favor and not look at my picture, I’d really appreciate it. Big time. Or, if you already peeked, please try to forget, or promise to keep it between just us? Thanks!

On the Mantle

Mom picked the last rose of the season yesterday. It’s up on the mantle, but I can smell it from here.

I want to eat it.

Sometimes mom picks it up and buries her nose in it, then she holds it down for me. I know she just wants me to sniff it, and I try really hard to be good, but I like to get in a little lick if I can. Mom’s smart, she knows that after the second lick comes the chomp. So she only lets me get in one.

I bet it’s really super tasty.

DC Animal Rescue

This post is for my mom, who is learning more about pet rescue in the DC area. Before I came along, she used to live in DC. And in Alexandria. She still has friends there (‘Cause it’s not that far away! I love to visit!!), a bunch of whom are on the great list for women in technology, DC Web Women. Some of those friends helped her put together a list of animal rescue organizations in the DC Area. I’m letting my mom use my blog to post what she learned, so the whole world can know and lots of animals can be saved. Mom and dad rescued my big cat brother Cooper, so maybe if some of you read this post you can rescue other great animals like him.

So here it is, in no particular order, other than breed-specific organizations at the end:

4Paws Rescue Team
http://www.fourpaws.org/
The 4Paws Rescue Team is a nonprofit community-based all volunteer organization that takes in neglected, abandoned, abused and unwanted cats and kittens. Cats rescued by 4Paws receive vaccines and appropriate veterinary care before being adopted into permanent, loving homes. An animal rescued by 4Paws will never be euthanized except out of medical necessity. Additionally, 4Paws is dedicated to supporting the management of populations and improving the health of feral cat colonies. 4Paws volunteers also hold seminars in local schools to teach children the importance of responsible pet care.

Some are from shelters, some are due to a death in the family, some because of family conflicts (human or animal) and some just because their family is moving and the Corgi can’t go with them. Placement in our rescue program does not mean that the Corgi was “bad” or abused. PWCCP does not accept dogs with a known biting history. Please be aware that we usually do not get puppies and most of the time the rescues are often adults over five years old.

Mondays!

I love Mondays.

Usually Willow and I play a-a-a-a-l-l-l-l-l weekend long. I run, jump around, chase Cooper, tear up & down the stairs, and go for walks. Sometimes Mom & Dad take us places for long walks, like the Farmer’s Market or Colonial Williamsburg. Other times people come to visit and I get to play with them (I love that).

So by the time Monday rolls around, I really need to rest and recover from the weekend. Know what I mean?

The other thing I like about Mondays? I’m one day closer to the day Carol, our pet sitter & dog walker from No Pet Left Behind, comes by for a visit!  Mom & Dad get to have a date (which makes them happy), and Willow, Cooper & I get to spend a lot of time with Carol.

That’s why Mondays are the greatest way to start the week.

No Pet Left Behind

This summer Willow, Cooper & I made a new friend: Carol from No Pet Left Behind, a fabulous pet sitting & dog walking service in Williamsburg. Now, when Mom & Dad have to go away and can’t take us along, Carol takes care of us. When she visits, she takes us for great walks, throws the ball for Willow (of course), feeds us, pets my tummy, and everything else we love. Cooper likes Carol, too – you can tell because he lets her pet him while he eats.

Sometimes Carol sends Mom & Dad our picture

Sometimes Carol sends Mom & Dad our picture

Carol is really smart and great at being our pack member. She’s a member of Pet Sitters International, and knows cool things like pet first aid and CPR in case of emergency. Mom & Dad are very happy about that, since Willow herniated her disc last Christmas.

Willow is especially happy that Carol takes care of us. She used to have a lot of fun going to the kennel, but it would make her tummy upset sometimes. And ever since she had to go to the hospital for her back, she hasn’t really liked leaving home without Mom & Dad.  I don’t blame her; I’d be scared, too. Now that we get to stay home, Willow’s tummy is happy.

I hope you have a nice person like Carol in your life, too. If you don’t, and you live in the Williamsburg area, try to get your people to read this post!

Mighty oaks from little acorns grow

Yesterday I secretly ate an acorn. This morning I threw it up in my crate.  I think I managed to keep a bit of it down, though.

Do I look any taller to you?

And I’m back!

Hi to everyone, I’ve been on hiatus from writing.  Been very busy playing with Cooper, chasing Willow, and barking at Mom & Dad. To catch up:

  • Happy Birthday Mom
  • Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad
  • Happy Birthday Dad
  • Merry Christmas world!
  • Get better Willow
  • Happy Birthday Cooper
  • Happy Birthday to me
  • Happy Birthday Willow
  • Happy Birthday Mom
  • Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad

Whew, that’s it! Sorry I’ve been so slack everybody!

You may have noticed the “Get better Willow” point in the list – last Christmastime, Willow got sick.  We were visiting family and she decided she was too tired to walk anymore. We drove home, and she slept on Mom’s lap the whole way. Then we got in the car again and visited a doctor. Then, instead of going home, we drove a few hours to NC State Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Willow saw another doctor. Then Mom & Dad & I went to a friendly La Quinta Inn and I let them sleep for a couple of hours. Then we went home, but Willow didn’t come with. Cooper was there, though, and that was nice.

Willow & Wiki

Willow & Wiki

I heard Mom & Dad say that Willow had herniated a disc. I’m not sure what that means, but I’m guessing it’s why Willow got tired of walking. She stayed there for a week, and then we drove back and picked her up. Everyone at NC State was so nice!!  And they fixed Willow!!!  She didn’t talk much and her eyes were a little blurry, but I could tell she was happy to see us. I was so excited that Willow had come back, but all she did was sit on the sofa. For a whole month! I thought she’d be more fun, but it was kind of boring. Mom & Dad wouldn’t let me wrestle with her, but we did get to snuggle a bit & I ran around to try to get her back in the spirit of being a corgi.

She started walking around again; Mom & Dad would help out by putting a stripey beach towel under her like a sling. She was great on carpet & grass the first day, even if she was a bit wobbly. Then she started going on the wood and linoleum (that’s the stuff in the kitchen).  It’s been over 8 months now, and she’s running around again. She still doesn’t do stairs (except the 4 going out of the house), but I think she just likes getting rides like a princess. We wrestle a little (not too much, Dad) and play tug some (not too much, Dad, really!).  All her fur is back, but if you pet her at the top of her back you can feel a divot where her bones are gone – way cool!

I’ll try not to wait so long between posts.  For awhile there, I thought I might not want to be a data dog anymore. But I guess that was just a phase!  More soon.

xoxo,

chomp chomp chomp

Today Cooper threw me one of his toys – it was a white mouse. Yesterday he left it for Willow, and she ripped the tail off. I got the body today, and just sunk my teeth in – fun! I tried to hide it in my mouth, but Mom pulled some mojo on me – she said “leave it” and I was powerless against her. I had to spit it out. Into the trash it went, and I went on my merry way.

I love Cooper for sharing his toys with me.

Dad!

Happy Father’s Day, Dad! Thanks for playing with me, giving me treats and chomps, and for taking me fun places. And thanks for picking all the ticks off Willow after she willfully ran into the woods after bunnies so that they didn’t get on me.

Remember, I’m the good dog this weekend!!

hello world

Dad says that when software works you can make it say “hello world”.  I haven’t been writing much lately, so I just wanted to make sure that my blog still works.  So

Hello, World!

ps: thanks to all the brave people in the military who help keep me safe
