The Miami Hurricanes are a win away from adding a sixth national championship to their trophy case ... and Jeremy Shockey -- who won one of them in 2001 -- spoke with TMZ Sports about what he'd tell the players ahead of the biggest night of their lives.

"Try to be like a horse with blinders," Shockey said. "The distractions are going to come, it's a big week."

The 45-year-old said the team has already weathered the storm of the season, noting the Hurricanes have played in three high-stakes playoff games to get to this point.

Dog the Bounty Hunter's son Garry Chapman -- who was fired, then reinstated, from a police force in Alabama last year -- is suing the department ... He says they only disciplined him to teach him a lesson for calling out a dirty cop.

Remember ... Chapman's employment was terminated last year after his involvement in a fatal high-speed car chase. He was later reinstated, but he says he should've never been fired in the first place.

In court documents, obtained by TMZ, Chapman alleges the police department, along with Priceville, Alabama, Mayor Sam Heflin, used the tragic incident as an opportunity to smear his name and get rid of him -- something Chapman alleges they were working on for some time.

Filmmaker Roger Allers -- perhaps best known for co-directing Walt Disney Feature Animation's "The Lion King" -- has died.

Film producer Dave Bossert confirmed the death on Facebook, writing, "I am deeply saddened by the news that our friend Roger Allers has passed on to his next journey. We were just trading emails this past week while he was traveling in Egypt, which makes this loss feel all the more unreal."

Bossert worked with Allers on many films through the '80s and '90s and described Allers as "one of the kindest people you could hope to know and work alongside."
