The Lord has really been dealing with me about getting healthy—not about becoming a “health freak,” but about being more intentional with my choices. I’ll be honest: I drink way too much Dr Pepper in a day, and by nature, I can be lazy. Motivation to exercise doesn’t come easily for me. But the truth is, once I finally get up and start moving, I usually enjoy it.
As I was thinking about this, a thought came to me: “The devil wants you to eat donuts.” If you really think about it, sugar drains us. It makes us tired, weighs us down, damages our joints—all things that can keep us from pursuing our God-given purpose. How can I write the next book God put on my heart if I’m too exhausted to focus? How can I live strong and healthy if I can barely move because my body isn’t being taken care of?
Now, if you ever meet me, chances are I’ll still have a Dr Pepper in my hand. But I’m learning to be more mindful because I want to live a long, healthy life—for myself, my family, and the calling God has placed on me. I once heard someone say, “Men always claim they’re willing to die for their family, but are you willing to work out for them? Are you willing to eat better for them?” That really hit home.
There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a donut or a soda now and then, but when food becomes an addiction—when we use it to comfort ourselves when we’re angry, sad, or stressed—it becomes a tool of the enemy. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He would love nothing more than to shorten our lives, to keep us too sick, too tired, or too distracted to fulfill the mission God has given us.
