ABOUT THE ALBUM/WIKIPEDIA
Heavy Soul is a compilation album by Atomic Rooster, a British rock band.
It is notable for several reasons:
Unlike most other, unlicensed, Atomic Rooster compilations, it covers the entire period from 1970-74.
It is the first in Castle Communications' definitive series of seven remastered Atomic Rooster CDs, the other five consisting of their studio albums from 1970–73 and a Vincent Crane career overview. All were compiled by music journalist Colin Harper, who also supplied extensive sleeve notes.
It contains the only CD issue to date of both sides of the 1974 Vincent Crane/Chris Farlowe-only 7", "Tell Your Story (Sing Your Song)"/"O.D.". However, these two tracks, originally released on Decca, were subect to a short-term licensing deal between Castle and Universal. This meant that they could not be included on the 2004 reissue of Nice 'n' Greasy; indeed, they were also removed from later pressings of Heavy Soul itself.
In 2005, Heavy Soul was also released as a DVD-Audio DualDisc on Silverline Records, Atomic Rooster's only such disc to date. This version was retitled The Best of and though retaining the same packaging and boasting remixed 5.1 surround sound, it omitted many of the tracks in order to facilitate issue as a single disc.

REVIEW/AMG
Brian O'Neill
Previous hits anthologies representing this interesting prog-metal pioneer are either pricey imports, out of print rarities, sadly incomplete, or any combination of the three. Heavy Soul rectifies this by containing no less than four cuts from each of the band's first five discs that came out during the group's halcyon days of 1970-1973; In Hearing of Atomic Rooster gets eight of its nine cuts placed here, in fact. Some obsessive types might complain that none of the post-Nice & Greasy discs are represented -- for some reason, there's a pocket of fans who salivate over the metallic '80s material the Roost put out before finally calling it a day -- but the key material that put the band on the map is all here. That -- combined with the excellent 16 pages of extensive liner notes, reproductions of old album cover art (slightly confusing since some of the records shown didn't contribute to this collection), and other vintage photos -- makes this a great record to find out about this strange yet sometimes brilliant act. The only drawback is a lack of unreleased gems, making this a rather redundant purchase for the person who is already a fan, but Heavy Soul's packaging still makes it a decent investment even for those already initiated.

William Ruhlmann
Atomic Rooster was a British progressive-rock group formed in 1969 with an original lineup of Vincent Crane (organ), Nick Graham (bass), and Carl Palmer (drums). Their debut album, Atomic Rooster, hit number 49 in the U.K. in June 1970, after which Graham and Palmer left the group. Crane maintained the name and recruited guitarist/singer John Cann and drummer Paul Hammond for the second album, Death Walks Behind You, which hit number 12 in the U.K., where it featured the number 11 single "Tomorrow Night," and number 90 in the U.S. Pete French of Cactus assisted on the third album, In Hearing Of, which featured the number-four U.K. single "The Devil's Answer" and reached number 18 in England and number 167 in America. Then the group split up again, and again Crane assembled a new Atomic Rooster, this time featuring singer Chris Farlowe, guitarist Steve Bolton, bassist Bill Smith, and drummer Rick Parnell. Made in England reached number 149 in the U.S. in 1972, but the group had split again by 1974. Crane fronted lineups of Atomic Rooster into the '80s, before taking up with Dexys Midnight Runners in 1983. In 1989, he committed suicide.
