The European Commission’s new health package signals a strong political commitment to strengthening the EU’s life sciences ecosystem and addressing longstanding structural bottlenecks across the sector. The package aims to foster a more innovation-friendly, predictable and globally competitive environment for biotechnologies, medical and in vitro diagnostic devices and cardiovascular health, with the objective of enabling faster access for European patients to life-improving and life-saving medicines and devices. AmCham EU applauds the Commission’s efforts to simplify existing rules within the Medical Devices and In Vitro Diagnostics Regulations and put forth fit-for-purpose frameworks within the new Biotech Act. While the overall direction is positive, a detailed analysis will be required to fully assess the practical implications and potential impact of the measures on innovation, investment and patient access. Co-legislators must seize momentum generated by the Commission’s simplification efforts to ensure Europe remains a leading destination for clinical research, biomanufacturing and breakthrough health technologies.

Ahead of the vote in the Council, twenty-six European business associations, including AmCham EU, call for the swift ratification of the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement. Representing €153 billion in trade and €380 billion in investment, the agreement could add €77.6 billion to the EU’s GDP by 2040. EU institutions should move forward without delay to strengthen market access and support over 750 million people across both regions. Yesterday’s Environmental Omnibus proposal is a positive step in simplifying the EU's environmental regulation and reducing administrative burdens for businesses.   Streamlined permitting and reporting can bring greater clarity and predictability for companies investing in Europe.   To fully deliver on the potential to reduce burdens for business, co-legislators must now move the Environmental Omnibus across the finish line.
