February Finally Finished U.F.O's, and a promised finish

Jackie was just so close to a finally finished U.F.O. she reckoned she was definitely gonna be finished by meeting's end, so we have let her off the hook, mind you, someone did sidle up and whisper, "If she doesn't finish we will dob...."
Trouble is, Jackie gets distracted, a lot, as Librarian, if she isn't jumping up to put her hand on just the right book for someones project, (and I have to tell you, some of those quilt descriptions can be pretty vague) she will be laying her hand on a piece of equipment someone needs or the biggest distraction of all, chatting - well, isn't that what its all about? catching up and sharing?
Jackie started this cutie a l o n g w a y b a c k, but while searching for something else last week she unearthed the button cutie. Just the thing for the F.F.U.F.O. Challenge.
Jackie has her own challenge within our challenge, she plans on finishing one item every month, well that's the plan.
Some sets of buttons saved so many years ago from her little brothers rompers, how cute are the little rocking horses.
From her Grandma's button collection, including some that Jackies Mum had on the front of her 'Tennis Whites'

Karen Do. is also ploughing through the U.F.O. pile, she bought this pattern/kit a couple of years ago at a craft exhiition, for some unknown (even to Karen) reason, they sat there, unfinished by 'just this much'. One tinsy little bit of seam.
A bright and lively cat panel was given to Karen to turn into a quilt, Karen plans on donating this cutie to her local cat rescue center to use as a fund raising raffle quilt. Another U.F.O finished!
Using free motion quilting Karen outlined block elements, which showed up beautifully on her backing.

Chris and Karen Do. had a bit of a collaboration going on. Creating some lovely place mats for her Daughter Chris found a need for just a little more of this lovel V Dub fabric, which Karen was only too pleased to share from her stash. Not needing the remaining fabric, Chris stitched up this terrific oven Glove for Karen as a thank you.

Just checking that there were no missed U.F.O.'s, asked Inge if there were any hanging around, 'No' was the firm answer, but quick as a flash she shows this, with a laugh and a 'but almost'

Charity Quilts push and Hi-Jinks

The push to get a load of charity quilts ready for the Burrumbuttock Hay Run saw another pile of quilts getting their labels attached and ready to be delivered by Wendy to their pick up point.
Sheila and Lorraine, busily stitching, Sheila has donated her quilt made in the recent Jan Phillips workshop 'Freedom', Sheila fessed up "When I was making the quilt I rather went off it, but now it's done I just love it!"  how often does that happen, too close to appreciate until the finished lovely emerges.  Sheila is still happy to donate her quilt to the Hay Run, knowing someone else will love it also.

We had torrential rains over the past weekend, but did that put Jackie off washing fabric, no way.  She had a plan for her donation and nothin' was getting in the way! -although Jackie was amused by the look of total disbelief on her neighbours face, watching Jackie hang little lengths of fabric on the line in between rain storms-
A brilliant design to quickly create a lovely quilt.  Jackie, with the help of Marlene was sharing her freshly labeled sweetie...
...until Miss Michief, who shall remain nameless, zoomed past and gave it a little yank, down it tumbled!!
But not to the floor, too quick to let that happen.

Wednesdays pile, with more promised.

Each donated quilt will have a special label attached, words suggested by Karen W and machine embroidered by Wendy.
There has been a few enquiries, from folk not from our neck of the woods, about what the Hay Run is about, so here are a couple of news items to put you in the picture, so to speak.  A great pic of just how big this thing is is in the April 7th Weekly Times article

and this link to the National Transport Free Newspaper has loads of stories

An addendum
An e-mail hit the desk last night from Connecting Threads, offering free shipping to Aust on orders over $75. The offer is only for a limited time, and also only for online orders.
Immediately thought of all you gals stitchin' your little hearts out on Charity Quilts, this is possibly a way of making quilts in a pattern you have been thinking about for awhile in a way that will not be cost prohibitive as a give away quilt.
If you are interested visit Connecting Threads here.
Some of their fabric is very reasonably priced, U.S.$ 3.50 to 4.60
and no, I don't get a kickback or anything, I'm just a name on a mailing list.

Chris has been missing in action for awhile, pleased to see her joining the ranks - but...wait...knitting? really?, Chris always has a bring along project.  Turns out her little Grandie (obviously a gunna be quilter) has been visiting, the sewing room is a wreck and the key to the sewing cabinet is...well...not where it should be, hence the knitting.

Heather is not slacking, not at all, has just finished another one of her lovely blocks and is taking a 'thinking about it break'
Honest!

Wendy was in the Machine room, busily machine appliquing block 3 of her 'Foxley Village' quilt while chatting to Marie, Wendy was not happy with her fox and wanted to remove him, and call the quilt ' Cat Village', however, an e-mail last night tells that with Marie's idea of the judicious application of a little water colour pencil, Foxley is now safe from extinction.
3 delicious blocks, wish my fabric would hurry up.

So...whats the goss Gals...
no, not just gossiping at all, Pat was showing a pic of a quilt that had inspired her for the one under the needle, but of course, as it so often happens, just not quite enough of one fabric caused a bit of a design tweek.
Janice, Beryl, Karen D, and Chris all agree, yep exactly different!!

Our Fabric dyeing workshop is coming up fast, just 2 weeks away, so a bit of a list of what we will all need.
Sue is supplying all the dyes so just the fabric and tools are needed.

Date 18 May
Washed white cotton fabric, - although there was some chat today about bringing an item of clothing you would like to re-vamp, but be aware, the thread used in construction may not be cotton and therefor will not dye
Zip lock bags or plastic containers large enough to suit the fabric pieces you will dye
Large plastic box that will hold the filled zip lock bags to take your fabric home
Lots of small jars or bottles to mix dyes in, and maybe take some dye home
Large plastic tray
Rubber Gloves
Old clothes (& shoes)
Old towels for mopping up the inevitable spills

May is Machine Embroidery display month for the glass cabinet in the entry, couldn't resist some pics of the beautiful work these clever girls do.

It's Over, done and dusted, missing it already...

...yep really, it was a fantastic quilt exhibition, masses of wonderful quilts to drool over or be inspired by.  Great excitement and camaraderie between all the volunteers, especially those who came in every day of the show.  The pride in raising heaps of $$$s for Najidah with our quilt raffles, we sold heaps of lovely goodies, lots of $$$'s floating back to creators to buy - you guessed it, more fabric!!

After the hours of planning and setting up the show it was amazing to watch it come down so quickly, thanks to the unstinting help of so many volunteers, particularly the wonderful menfolk who pitched in to move all those heavy tables, plinths, chairs and re-setting up of the Cottage.
A very big thank you to Nathan, Geoff, Ross, Lionel, John and Paul for your unstinting hard work.
A few more pics of the big un-doing, Kim came to say good-bye, Michelle, Di and Sandy chewing the fat, Paul and Pat getting the floor covers ready for quilts, Janice (just a peek), Lorraine and Marcia packing up the sales room, Gwen, lining up to check out her quilts and then off home for a nice refreshing cuppa.
And now, on to the big event, will try for a post a day.
No particular order, just the way I meandered through the Cottage.

First quilt from the 2015 Quilt Show and Sale is from that amazing youngster, Bailey with her vibrant 1st quilt.

Bailey
'Teddy Bears'
"I made this quilt because I needed a blanket for my bears.  I chose the colours because they looked pretty".
Pieced and quilted by Bailey, aged 8.

Wendy (Bailey's Gran)
'Wendy's House'
A group of us decided to do this same quilt.  It is interesting to see how the different colour choices and fabrics make for very different quilts.
The pattern is 'Leanne's House' by Leanne Beasley.
I hand embroidered and machine pieced and quilted the quilt.

Sandy
'Affordable Faberge'
"I love using Jinny Beyer's fabrics and this kit caught my eye because of the beautiful jewel fabrics.  It was quite challenging to make and there was a lot of unpicking involved.
I machine pieced the quilt and it was machine quilted by Judy of Furball Farm Quilting.

Chris
'May Flowers'
"At our last Quilt Show in 2013 several members had made quilts in this design by Joanne Ridley from the book 'Jelly Roll Inspirations' by Pam and Nicky Lintott, I liked the simple design and the combination of machine sewing and hand applique.  I originally intended to make only a single size bed but decided to expand it to cover the bed in our guest room.  It came together very quickly and it was finished off beautifully by the Quilting Fairy, Fiona.  Visitors have commented that it looks very Irish but I just love the colours".

Betty
'Pink for Girls 1'

"This quilt was made with one of my granddaughters in mind".
The quilt was machine pieced and quilted by me.

Karen
'Gingham Girls'
"I received the pattern and kit for this quilt as a gift.  It took a couple of years to complete.  I laid out all the fabrics for all the blocks initially to ensure the flow of colours was correct.  All pieces were then carefully labelled and stored until the embroidery was completed.
The pattern is a Bronwyn Hayes (Red Brolly) design.
The quilt was machine pieced and hand quilted by me.

Beryl
'Find the Nine Patch'
"The Buderim Craft Cottage held a workshop on the Disappearing Nine Patch.  This is my version".
The quilt was machine pieced and quilted by me.

Marie V.
'Owls in the Middle'
"Since learning to do 'quilt as you go', I have been addicted to making small 'I Spy' baby quilts for my great grandchildren and other friends' children.  It is great for using up all your scraps.  The projects were inspired by a fat quarter of owl fabric and the pattern depended on the size of the scrap fabric.  The quilting on this quilt is done on the machine."

Susan
'A Ribbon Pathway'
This quilt is from an Australian Patchwork and Quilting magazine inspired by a quilt made by Roslyn Cooper (originally from the book 'Rotary Roundup' by Judy Hopkins and Nancy Martin) for the 2000 Paralympics fundraiser.
Churn dash blocks set on point, all cotton fabrics (including some Liberty)
Machine pieced by me and machine quilted by Esther Strelen.

Marion
'Autumn Leaves'
"Autumn Leaves was adapted from a design by Jane Grove which appeared in a copy of the Machine Embroidery Magazine and made by a novice quilter!
It was machine pieced but I haven't quite got around to the quilting!"

Diane
'Pleasures Hidden'
"I loved these colours together.  I machine pieced them but the quilt was professionally quilted.  The quilt was made in 1998 but around that time I bought a king size bed and as this fits a queen size bed it has been in the cupboard and never used."

Lorraine I.
'Mummy Loves Pink'
"I make an 'I Spy' quilt for most of the babies in my family and it was whilst I was making for the newest member that I realised that I had made exactly the same quilt for her older brother just 3 years earlier.  Put the 'I Spy' fabric away and had to think of something else.  I found these teeny tiny little alphabet pictures that were not too American and got to work with pencil and paper.
Mum, Jodi, really is a very girlie girl and truly loves the colour pink, so as the new baby was going to be a girl then pink it is to be.
Hunted every quilt shop on the coast and there are fat quarters bought from all the shops to make this up.  I tried to enlarge the little alphabet pictures with borders and links of white to tone down all that bright pink!
The new baby will have it for her baptism soon.
The quilt is my design and I machine pieced and quilted it."

Marie
'Bush Tucker'

Pat
'Throw of the Dice'
"I wanted to try something different but also wanted to use just solid colour fabric.  Using a 'Drunkard's Path' template I cut several pieces of various colours and came up with squares and circles.  It looked pretty plain but I had seen quilting done in straight lines and very close together change the look of fabric.
I placed the one dot, dice-like squares on an angle on grey fabric and just started quilting using my domestic Janome and walking foot.  Using threads of various weight and type, polyester, cotton, silk and choosing colours that blended with the dice, the grey fabric took on a rainbow effect, front and back.  I have seen this type of quilting described as 'matchstick quilting."

Gwen
White wholecloth quilt - Hand embroidered
a closer view of the center design
"This was a request from my grandson and his lady friend.  I nearly said 'I only make wedding quilts' but just said 'of course I will"
A 'whole cloth' quilt which I hand quilted.

Karen
'I call it Holly Hobby'

Marcia
'Summer in the Park'
"I saw this quilt on 'YouTube' from Missouri Star Quilts and as I had this lovely Jelly Roll thought it suited the title 'Summer'.  Machine pieced and quilted by me.

Lyn
'Animal Farm'
"I made this quilt for my granddaughter's fourth birthday.  Most of the animals are from Kellie Wulfohn's 'Animal Alphabet'.  The remainder are from colouring books.  The quilt is hand and machine pieced and hand and machine quilted.

 Stella
'Foundation'
My husband requested a quilt for our bed.  I had made quilts for every member of the family (12) but never one for our bed until now.
I machine pieced the quilt and the machine quilting was done by Fiona, the Quilting Fairy.

Ailsa
'Jelly Roll Joy'
A quilt and cushion
"This quilt was made from 2 Jelly Rolls plus borders.  It was my first attempt to use Jelly Rolls.  We had a workshop at the Cottage and the Jelly Roll design was offered by the Sewing Basket.  The border fabric was from the Patchwork Angel.
I machine pieced the quilt and the Quilting Fairy did the quilting.
The cushion has a Sashiko embroidery center with borders to match my Jelly Roll quilt.  I hand embroidered and then machine quilted the cushion"

Marie
'Celtic Puzzles'
"The pink fabric I purchased many years ago and I have always wanted to do these designs.  So I put them together and I am happy with the results.
The blocks are micro stipple quilted with different designs on sashing and border.
The pattern is taken from a book written by Philomena Wiechel which was published in 1980.
Machine pieced and machine quilted on a domestic machine by me."
