Eating and drinking

It seems that I ran up against a bout of bloggers block for the last month, a concept of which I was unaware, being fairly new to the blogging game. We didn’t stop living for four weeks; in fact we’ve been just as busy as before, but all the potential blog titles I started were never written, or incomplete. I think Ali and I hit a wall with our life in America. Winter was dragging on without being really winter; our territory was limited by how far we could walk, our available time to travel and the endless need to organise things; weekends were disrupted by time spent at work.  We felt claustrophobic, limited and this made us anxious. None of which made for productive blogging. And yet, things never stay still. Spring arrived, or I should say summer arrived: Philly went from 5 degrees to 25 degrees in about 48 hours. The grey trees turned green, and white blossoms flowered. We did some things to make us feel better, and it worked.

It turns out that a lot of things can happen over four weeks in Philly. The gallery below is a retrospective of some of the good bits, some of which I’ll post about in more detail later on.

Ali and I didn’t do much for valentines day. It was late by the time we left work, so we headed to Chinatown for some Peking duck at Wong Wong (which is probably better than the more famous SangKee, at least more relaxed) before heading home for a red-pink Gin. In Chinatown we ran across an old fire-engine (exciting my curiosity for old forms of transport) which turned out to be a film location services engine, as some filming was going on down a back alley.

When we arrived home, we found that the view of the filming from the apartment was even better. We couldn’t find out what was being shot, but there was definitely some green-screen action and a man in a superhero costume… It seems we often end up living in film location hot-spots; our road in Kentish Town was regularly taken up by film trucks, and famously starred in the (king of romantic movies) Hugh Grant film About a Boy.

In lieu of a card, Ali made me this really rather excellent pair of Valentines antlers from post-it notes (I’ve long since learnt not to question her when she buys random multi-coloured packs of post-its in the shop).

Post-it antlers and bike wheel

I responded with a really rather rubbish attempt at a post-it bike wheel, complete with messenger cards between the spokes and a heart shaped axle (which probably wouldn’t give the smoothest of rides). The Philly skyline also got in the romantic mood, turning red-pink to celebrate the day.

Blood oranges were not something we had a lot of in London. We had maybe a handful delivered in our veg box a couple of times a year, but in the supermarket or at the veg stall we would only rarely come across them. This was a pity; blood oranges have always been one of my favourites, with their surprising, sweet red flesh. I was pretty chuffed then to discover an enormous pile of them at Iovine Brothers last weekend, several of which accompanied us home.

A bloody nose

In the process of pouring a (strictly medicinal) gin in the week we discovered an absence of limes in the house. This isn’t enough to stop the process of gin making, but it turns out that a blood orange, quartered with one quarter floating, the other squeezed makes a rather excellent substitute!

Protocol:

  1. Ice
  2. Gin, a glug-glug-glug. glug.
  3. Tonic
  4. Quarter blood orange squeezed
  5. Quarter blood orange floating
  6. repeat
