We’re appalled at the backsliden among us who have taken a stand against our righteous zeal for the truth
There are actually two questions here. Is cancellation something that Christians do? And is cancellation something that is proper for Christians to do?
The answer to the first question is obviously “yes.” Christians have been consistent cancelers through the years – often to very lamentable and embarrassing effect.
The Puritans, for instance, were fans of cancel culture long before it was cool. The Salem witch trials are one infamous example. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter” immortalizes this Puritan cancel culture. But long before the Puritans, the Church was regularly scandalized by excommunications and counter-excommunications leading far too often to public executions.
In more recent years, the American evangelical church has engaged in its own version of cancel culture. The following tweet was recently sent to me by a friend:

Most of the vicious criticism of evangelicals comes from the evangelical left. See the book Moral Minority, a sympathetic history of the evangelical left. The left are a tiny minority with a big mouth and furious that the majority hasn’t joined them in promoting socialism. Keller, Russel Moore, David French, the Gospel Coalition and Christianity Today are the evangelical left. The election of Trump made them deranged and they need serious counseling. They became vicious toward evangelical conservatives and chose to destroy the reputation of all Christianity if the majority refuse to join them in their socialism.
Keller is an old socialist from when he was a teenager. But he is supposed to be a Calvinist, too. Yet he thinks that Trump’s election made it impossible for God to choose people to be saved? I can’t figure him and Piper out. Christianity Today promoted raw Marxism in the 1990s, which is why I dropped my subscription. Today, they keep it better concealed but are still hard-core Marxists.

And of course how dare we sacrifice lives for personal freedom. We learned from this that people who have no murderous intent can kill people by simply removing cells. We also learned that strategies that do absolutely nothing save lives if you give up your freedom. We also learned that people are not responsible for their own lives. If someone gets an abortion, it’s only the woman’s fault not the man’s. That makes sense.
Sadly, if you follow this thinking to its logical end it fits in perfectly with the pro-rape and incest propaganda that teach that human existence is a plague to the earth.
But as a Christian, I do have a responsibility not to lie. I can’t be apart of the anti-abortion cult because it’s a sin to lie. Also, slavery is a sin. I can’t agree with enslaving an entire population. I also have a responsibility to my family not to allow them to be harmed and abused by authoritarians who have no interest in their well being.
