How to cancel two-factor authentication

To cancel or disable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on GitHub, follow these steps:

1️⃣ If You Can Still Access Your Account

If you're logged in and want to disable 2FA, do this:

1. Go to GitHub Security Settings

   • Visit: [GitHub → Security Settings](https://github.com/settings/security)

2. Find the "Two-Factor Authentication" Section

   • Under "Access", click Disable two-factor authentication.

3. Confirm Your Password

   • GitHub will ask you to enter your password to confirm.

4. Enter 2FA Code (if prompted)

   • If prompted, enter the authentication code from your Authenticator app or SMS.

5. Click Disable

   • This will remove 2FA from your account.

2️⃣ If You’re Locked Out & Can’t Access 2FA

If you lost access to your Authenticator app or backup codes, try these:

🔹 Use Your Recovery Codes

• When setting up 2FA, GitHub provided recovery codes.
• Enter a recovery code instead of the normal 2FA code on the login screen.

🔹 Use a Registered Device

• If you've set up a security key (like a YubiKey) or saved a trusted device, you might be able to log in using that.

🔹 Contact GitHub Support

If you don’t have recovery codes or access to your authentication method:

1. Go to: [GitHub Account Recovery](https://github.com/login)
2. Click "Trouble logging in?"
3. Follow the account recovery process.
4. Submit a request to [GitHub Support](https://support.github.com/request) with proof of identity.

3️⃣ Important Notes

✔ After disabling 2FA, you can enable it again anytime.
✔ If you use GitHub for work, check if your organization requires 2FA before disabling it.
✔ Consider switching to a different 2FA method (like a hardware security key) instead of disabling it completely.

But I can't find "Access" under "Access", please click "Disable two-factor authentication". This step

Click the three dots ... then select Disable two-factor authentication.

@fulanumoto This is just not possible for most accounts anymore. Instead of the dots menu on the right there is the label that is is enabled.

Please add this option back in. 2FA is quite secure but a hardware key is better so I'd like to remove the now weakest point of failure and only use the hardware key. I'm also stuck on the "Enabled" label like the guy above me

I don't care about security, no one knows my passwords and in 20 years never once has anyone breached my accounts. I am only blocked from logging into thangs because of 2FA. They WILL NOT let you remove 2FA from some accounts. I had to go get my other phone so I couldn't access github for a week because of this stupid 2FA required method of using a seaparate device, which serves only this purpose of logging into github and I don't keep it with me. I don't have time for this. If someone really hacked my account they could have it, I would rather lose the account than be blocked out because of 2FA. If that phone is lost I'll be locked out for good.
