I don’t have the update for the price list of the ATVs services because this is just a throwback entry since Mayon Volcano is very active. Alert Level 3 has been raised around the area. As of this moment tourist flew in and out the Albay to witness the glowing lava at night. Albay can be accessed via airplanes to Legazpi or by land transportation from Manila. Double the A’s: Asik-Asik Falls

IMG_9541.JPGDecember 2013:
Don’t tell my parents that I’ll be in Zamboanga.
Don’t tell my parents that I’ll be in Basilan.

And in August of 2014
Don’t tell my parents that I am all alone at Cotobato.

Despite the bad news we are hearing from the radio; watched and read in our daily primetime newscast and newspaper; I still wanted to go in those places. Not because that I am a hardcore traveler or a suicidal adventurer; but because of what I can see in those places. Yeah I must admit that it was a risk but I don’t mind it.

Donde Si Jep’s way:
A day before my trip, I had a lot of change of plans and routes. I am not a kind of traveler who always had a written itinerary or any hotel resevations prior to my trips. So thanks for the help of my friends namely Glen of Escape Manila, Mow Kalim and Gerald Germones, somehow I had a route.

IMG_8771-0.JPG

IMG_9141-0.JPG
Spent a night in Garden City of Samal with Jay, Glen, Mark and Rubi, again not my original plan but because its Jay’s birthday so I decided to with them. Overnight, I finally decided that I will go to Cotobato City. But wait there’s more; it’s not a final until I my feet landed over. From Sassa Wharf we get to SM City Davao – Ecoland, be sure not to be mislead by the other SM which is SM City Lanang. SM-Ecoland have the van terminal going to places to the direction of Midsayap and Cotobato City. Took our late lunch in one of the restaurant inside the mall, had the our farewells, and now I’m all alone to continue my adventure, not in Cotobato City but in Midsayap, North Cotobato. (where Asik-Asik Falls is nearest).I have a feeling that I should be in the area before too late at night because of what my friend suggestions are and what the hell the our taxi driver said about Cotobato. So I approached the van driver and the barker (the one who call for passengers), if there will be an accomodation in Midsayap around the terminal where the double tire jeepneys are in. They said Yes, alot. They assured me that it will be safe. Luckily I am the last passenger, and usually it takes hours 4 hours waiting time in ordinary day. Its holiday tomorrow so the people are going to their hometowns.

IMG_9543.PNG
Don’t cha worry Child.
I paid 290 pesos for the fare from Davao City to Midsayap crossing. Leave the SM Ecoland at 3:45pm. While on transit, a girl beside me ask me if I am sure that I will go to Asik-Asik Falls. And I answered her gasping YES. Hahaha. She discussed me a lot of matters and giving me some points of how will to be in Asik-Asik. Her name is Kathy, she is from Dado, Alamada, North Cotobato. Even Kathy have to sleepover with her Aunty because there are no available public transportation going to Dado in the afternoon. She took away my worries about Cotobato. She said that even that Asik-Asik Falls is just few kilometers away from their home, she haven’t been there.” It will take a lot of effort for me.” she said. We just had one pitstop in Kidapawan City, and I bought there some chips because I know its gonna be along drive.

***last trip of vans usually is upto 5pm but be sure to have the earlier depart because of chance of cancellation of trip. And buses are available at the Ecoland Bus Terminal.

Midsayap, North Cotobato.
As we arrived at around 8:30pm at the junction of Midasayap, drivers of motorcycles and habal-habal are around and offering for a ride. So Kathy said it will be better if I will be going with her, and she will just drop me in one of the hotel near the market. Van terminal is few meters away from where I dropped. To describe the situation of Alamada, it was too much different from what other people had said about Cotobato. There’s a Jollibee LOL! Colleges students are around and its more lively than in Bagac, Bataan. A ten peso ride upto Hotel Angelo. A lot of accommodation around the area, but I am so dead tired so I don’t want to explore anymore. Hotel Angelo’s rate for single standard aircon room is 650, with cable TV and H&C shower. 650 will be too expensive for me, so I asked for a discount, but she said she’s not the owner so she can’t have a discount for me. But I don’t give up, had a conversation again, asked informations, and used a charisma. Viola!!! “Teka nga, tawagan ko si Doc.” Having their conversation in bisaya, I have understood some and finally the owner allow me to just pay 500php. Wi-Fi connection is good even inside the room. And I also asked the guard and the receptionist if they have any contact of a habal-habal driver that willing to service me up to Asik-Asik Falls. Prepare for a sleep. Tomorrow is another day!

IMG_9050.JPG
It’s Adventure Time.
A phone call from the guard woke me up. He told me that he contacted his neighbor named Jun (0907-624-8459). I get down and started to bargain. The rate of the habal-habal ride two way from Midsayap – Asik-Asik Falls is 1000-1500php. But because of tight competition of habal-habal ride, I got his service for 800php. So the deal is on, so I ate my breakfast in one of the 39ers eatery. many foodstals and Halal eatery are around because there is a university and muslim community nearby. Back to hotel and pack my things. Its impossible to be back in Hotel around 12noon-checkout so I just bring my things with me (a 35lit bag for 5 full days).

IMG_8974.JPG

IMG_9038.JPG

IMG_9039.JPG
How to get to Asik-Asik Falls
My 800php can be cut to almost half if I will take a public transpo, but I am more valuing the time more than just the price I will be saved. So its up to you what will you choose.

1. As Kathy (my seatmate last night) and the hotel receptionist had told me. I can ride a jeepney (double tire) that is carrying a lot of supplies from the Market of Midsayap to Dado, Alamada. Usually take 1-2 hours(around 170,might be a topload ride), a lot of stop over before to get there. Then from Dado you will take a habal-habal ride, but they didn’t mention for the price because they haven’t been there. Jeepneys start to leave the Midasayap at around 9am-10:30am. That’s why its hard to get back in Midsayap on the same day because of limited public transportation they have.

2. Another option is to ride a double tire jeep to Alamada, then habal-habal again upto Dado, then again habal-habal again or you may deal again to your driver if they willing to go all the way to Asik-Asik Falls. Forgive me I forgot to write down the rates.

3. A two hour habal-habal ride from Midasayap to Asik-asik Falls vice versa.

*Sign boards are seen saying. Registration of the tourist going to Asik-Asik Falls is at the Municipal Hall of Alamada, but I don’t read about this before so we just continue to the falls, and there’s also a registration, but they didn’t issue a receipt. But if you already have the receipt of registration from Municipal you will just log your name in their record book. Fee: P40php (not sure).

Donde Si Jep: Asik-Asik Falls
From hotel, we leave at around 8am and filled the single motor with 200php gas. The motor is a big and can ride upto 3 passengers. My driver is in full gear so Kuya Jun is ready for a ride. LOL.
Short talks and ass numbing ride, he is wearing a helmet so it’s hard to talk to him and he need to focus on the road. 60% of the road we traveled are in concrete, and sort of mud and bumpy along the way. As we travel I can feel the cooling breeze of air, the roads becoming less populated by cars and trucks, big jeepneys with full of loads upto the top. The sunshine is blocked by the clouds and the views becoming greener and greener. Getting nearer to Dado, Alamada, the roads are becoming more bumpy and after passing the school and market; the mud and rocky road going up the hills and mountains was so intense. Two hours! Past 10am when we finally arrived to the registration site. Relaxed myself for couple of minutes, sign up and go. I just let my driver rest so I went down alone. The trail is easy and passing by a convenient store/house then a Gate, the arrow pointing in some other direction so I got lost for a moment (natawa ako sa arrow).
Getting down, you can see the greeny landscape, can hear the pounding water. Erosion are seen, and the stairs. I took maybe 10 mins to get down on that stairs. I hate this kind of trail walks.

IMG_9184.JPG
“Ay ang ganda pala talaga!”. WOWed twice. Its bigger what it looks like in the pictures. Like a water walls. It’s unique feature is truly a world class. As I approached the falls I can see now the other visitors (local). There is a wood table ifront of the falls and can be use free of charge. There is a small sari-sari store but only limited refreshment is sold. Water from the free flowing faucet is drinkable. Usually the people who come here were the locals from Midsayap and nearby and very few foreigners are going here maybe because of the news. Oldies and kiddos are all enjoying the falls, the rapids are not that strong so its safe for the kids, but should be guarded by parents/guardian at all times.

IMG_9508-0.JPG

IMG_9183-0.JPG

IMG_9505-0.JPG

IMG_9205-0.JPGThe place is guarded by the Barangay Tanods about two of them, wearing uniforms and a jungle bolo with them.
Photo ops are okay so I need now the obligatory selfies and portraits. So I asked someone to have me picture on a certain portion of the fall. Had small talk and she was surprised that I am from Manila and solely had my adventure in Cotobato. She asked me if I am not afraid from what I heard and seen about Cotobato. I gave her smile (pacute lol) and answered: “Wala naman po ako ginagawang kasalanan sa kanila, kaya hindi ako dapat matakot.”. replied me “ Tama yan, enjoy mo lang. Tapang mo ah”. Continue with the phot ops and said my farewell to the falls and to the one stranger I’ve talked to. I stayed there for 45minutes.

IMG_9034-0.JPG

IMG_9033.JPG

IMG_9035-0.JPG

IMG_9037-0.JPG
And the heat is on!
If I can only stay on the canopy of the Asik Asik Falls until afternoon but I have to go and explore the Cotobato City before sunset. 30 minutes of extensive heat while climbing up the man made stairs. As I went up I’ve talked to some of the visitors going down the falls and one of the remarkable is that Muslim mom. She talked to me in Bisaya, maybe she thought I am a bisaya, I answered her because it was just a common questions that I am prepared to answer. But a follow up question is too hard to understand so I said “Tagalog po ako.. haha.” She just asked if the falls is beautiful and if there’s a picnic tables. LOL nahuli ako! Again she asked me where I came from, why I’m alone and why I am not afraid. Same questions, same answers, over and over again. She said her goodbyes: “Sige na, and enjoy mo ang Mindanao.”. Sweet words! I also encountered a two teens, who also asked a question in Bisaya, but I’m too busy breathing in exhaustion. So I ask them in Tagalog, again the questions lol. And she said, I should waited for her. It’s just a joke but patola ako, “OO nga sayang, next time may puntahan pa kasi ako.”

IMG_8800.JPG

IMG_8793.JPG

IMG_8796.JPG

IMG_8794.JPG
Finally I’m backed to the registration site. After a while we headed back to Midsayap, but I aske him to stop over in a eatery because I am so hungry and I feel so tired. We stopped at Alamada and treat him a lunch. Gas up the motorcycle again worth 100php, so a total of 300php and gave my balance of 500ph. And then ask him to drop me in the van terminal going to Cotobato City, where my next adventure is awaiting.

The Kayangan Lake

20140522-094947-35387976.jpg
One of the Asias’ cleanest lake. Surrounded by limestone and and trees. Clear water and can swim with needle fish around. Great rock formations underwater. It has a solution of 70% fresh water and 30% saltwater/sea water. Kayangan lake is part of the Coron Island.

20140522-094948-35388131.jpg
But before you land your feet unto the lake of Kayangan. You have to trek for a couple of minutes, and at the peak of this stairs-trekking you can see the view deck of the Kayangan Lagoon in where your boats were docked.

20140522-095154-35514479.jpg

20140522-095154-35514347.jpg
And just around the spot you can see a cave. Our guide said that the cave can be explored but we have to be fully equiped. So I just use the stairs down the lake after I had my photo ops. While slowly walking down the stairs, you can see the leaves are slowly unveiling the lake.

20140522-095311-35591681.jpg

20140522-095311-35591816.jpg
The lake is so clear to greenish color. Surrounded by wood platforms, limestones hills, trees and needle fish that you can swim around. Nice rock formation underwater and you can see the bed of the lake because of the clear water.

20140522-095452-35692114.jpg
If you want more thrill on this trip, you can explore a cave and a hole underwater.

20140522-095547-35747998.jpg
By the way, I traveled solo here in Coron so I have to ask our guide to take me pictures. 😉 I had this tour package F with the travel agency El Compass, their office is at the Real Street near Hard Rock at the Town Proper. Being “joiners” of the strangers was cool, I’ ve learned a lot from them their experiences and culture. And most of all I save a lot of money, because private tours are so expensive.

Lunch is included in the tour and served in picnic style.

Basilan’s Rubber Tree Plantation

Rubber Tree Plantation
Along the Highway of Brgy. Cabunbata,
Isabela City, Basilan
20140521-095451-35691896.jpg

Talomo River Calinan, Davao City : Water Tube Rafting

20140402-211305.jpg

20140402-211316.jpg

Hahahah. Meet the strangers.

Sipalay: A Sweet Paradise Getaway

20140318-085027.jpg

“I am just alone, but not a loner.” I always say this phrase, over and over whenever I’m meeting new people Who doesn’t want to have a companion on a trip?! I loved to but due to some reasons your travel buddies are not available. But It doesn’t bother me at all if I go for a trip solo or in a group, I KNOW HOW TO ENJOY.

Plan a head.
Yes, planning is a must for more convenience and for preparation for a trip or adventure. On this trip my original plan is to be with my mountaineering group (Isang Backpack Ka Lang) to up of the Grandest Mountain of Visayas Region the Mount Kanlaon; but due to some forces of nature (laziness strikes!), I am not going with them. Its already my 4th visit in the province of Negros Occidental, and I am looking for something new and exciting.

20140317-222059.jpg

Negros Overload.
The third largest Island of the Philippines. Located in the Western Visayas and sugar is the industry in this Island. Bacolod City is the capital of the Negros Occidental and Dumaguete City is for the Negros Oriental bounded by mountain ranges together with Kanlaon; as one of the most active volcano in the Philippines. About a 1 hour by plane travel from Manila and can also be reached by sea for 20 hours. Definitely Negros is my favorite place to go, aside from Bacolod’s Masskara Festival (October) and their authentic chicken Inasal; this place also offers a great nature tripping.

Where to go now.
Three days before the flight I decided not to pursue the mountain climbing because I am not prepared for the climb and my plane schedule doesn’t match with their schedule. So I have to go somewhere which I haven’t been to. I just did my research to place where I might be going a day before my trip and then I saw this post of picture of Danjugan Island. I find it interesting cause they offer an overnight stay in the Island plus a activities like snorkeling, kayaking and marine preservation seminar. I called them to inquire about my interest but unfortunately the Island was not available for tour. Though its sad to know that I can’t see Danjugan Island, so I just browse again to see other tourist spot in Negros Island and finding blogs that the northern part of Negros is still under recovery from typhoon Yolanda. Last resort I will be in Southern Negros. A friend suggested that I must visit Sipalay for the fine beaches especially the brown sand Sugar Beach. Googled it and then boom! My eyes can get out of the screen when I found that Sipalay has too many place to visit and the view of islets stunned me. So after work, I packed my things and prepare for tomorrows big SOLO Backpacking in Sipalay City.

Detouring but which is which. How to get to Sipalay?
I took the earliest flight of TigerAirways at 5:55am EDT and touched down the new Silay-Bacolod International Airport. Almost one hour away travel time from Silay to Bacolod City’s downtown and a P150.00 per pax fare to a shuttle ride. From the airport you can be dropped off at the South terminal where you can ride a bus going Hinoba-an and get off at Sipalay City (in front of Chicken Ati-Atihan). But before I go to Sipalay. My trip is not complete if I will not have my favorite Inasal of Aida at Manokan. My seatmate in shuttle van asked me if I know some restaurant that is open at that morning (she is new to Bacolod and traveling with her Mom) and I suggest to have Manokan Country (which Aida’s Inasal is situated). But that time Aida’s was not yet open so I go for Bernadette. I still prefer Aida afterwards. After eating breakfast, I was asked by my friend to drop by at the Supercat Station, to send some sweets for his girlfriend and also have small talks with some of my friends there (I also met them during my first travel in Bacolod by my Instagram friend Louis). I also seek for the advice from them about Sipalay and how to get there. Bid a farewell, then go to the plaza, rode a jeep to LaSalle and drop off to South Terminal (P8.00), but it was challenging because its my first time to travel in a jeep all by myself so, I thought I’m lost so I keep on asking my seatmate if the station is just near or I just missed it. Panic mode. And finally I saw the bus station but I forgot that I’m in Bacolod so I said to the driver to pull over is “Manong para…”, but he doesn’t stop so I just bursted my trying hard Ilonggo “ay mali, Manong lugar lang…lugar lang…” Then people in the jeepney smiled on me and I feel the blushing of my face (I have to say that blushing because it doesn’t shows with my skin LOL).

It was few minutes before 10 am when I arrived at the Ceres Bus Station, and good thing I’m going to ride an Air Conditioned bus. Flashing led sign board of the bus, says “Binayawan via Hinoba-an” so I confirmed it with the dispatcher if it gonna pass the Sipalay City where my destination is. The fare for this 167km long trip is 234php. The bus depart and have some series of stop over around south Bacolod Highway to pick up some passengers, thou the bus was full. Hours passed and City by City stop overs and had a 15minutes break at the Kabankalan City’ Ceres Terminal (our lunch break).

Then I noticed that more people are waiting for in the terminal, so I asked my local seatmate why does the bus was so crowded, and just answered me in tagalog that some of the bus are on hold because of the license issues. That was a very hot day, so thank God I’m on an air conditioned bus. The trip continued eventually. The people who are standing are started to subside and feel sleepy ( after 4hours). Passing the Cauayan district I now seeing the coastal and the green fields of Negros Occidental. I got the chance to see the Danjugan Island from afar. I’m starting again to capture the view from my windows. Everything on this bus ride is okay until an old woman puke on the bus. And the maasim (soury) smells around. So the conductor cleaned this mess. And few hours later my eye sparkle when I saw a road sign that I am nearing. And finally after 5 and a half hours I got landed at the Sipalay City. I just randomly dropped at plaza without knowing where is the right bus stop.

An then I met kuya dado, he was the one who will be me for the entire tour here in Sipalay. At first he offered me some resort and activity I must go. He knew that I am on a solo trip so he started to give me affordable offers, we transact and agreed some deals. It was past 4 when we left the plaza and drive uphill to Perth Paradise Resort (www.facebook.com/PerthParadiseResort). I have noticed that Sipalay tourism was not that crowded compared to the other provinces I had been. A smile from a receptionist is a plus. I am just a walkin visitor so, luckily there was available Cabanna that time (P1000.00/night good for 2pax, fan room). I roamed around and checked the room and then I saw a bamboo raft and asked right away if I can use it. And they allow me. But I have to check-in first. LOL. So I signed a waiver and read the house rules and pay for 1 night cause I’ll be transferring to other district as my original plan. I got the number of Kuya Dado for tomorrows activity, and left. So I started to ride the bamboo raft. I was alone doing the rafting, so I get easily tired and just go up to the pool area to see the sunset. It was awesome view of Islets. A dramatic sunset. Other visitors also watched the sunset and some were swimming at the pool. I was capturing pictures when a staff and the the owner of the resort approach me and have some talk. They offer me to see the White Beach at night and have a bottle of beer courtesy of KC (the owner). So some exchange of thoughts, ideas and experiences, together with his staff. I got to know some of them Mac (the Chef), Glen, and Jeff (I am not so sure of his name).

Back to the resort, ordered for dinner. Normally 160-180php per menu, and good for 2-3 persons, and it was freshly cooked and tasty. Must taste their Bakareta (beef, with saucy potato and carrots, bit spicy).

After the dinner, I swim to the pool, open till 10pm, with a bar aside the pool, lighting and life guard on duty. It was calm and relaxing moment. Swimming under the moon, surrounded by Islets. And I call it a night.

Day 2: Where will be my next stop.
It’s a very unusual to me to woke up in a very early morning, especially when I am just on a tour and no one will wake me up and alarm clocks doesn’t work (deaf with ringing alarms lol). But this day is different, I woke up before the sunrise and go to the highest place I can be (the rooftop). The rays of the sun light up the islands and unveiling once again the beauty of Sipalay. You can also hear the waves and tweeting making the whole place as Paradise. Freshly brewed coffee while viewing the islets was cool. If only I can stop the time.

After lunch, I called for the city tour of Kuya Dado, agreed deals and start the tour immediately. By the way I’m extending my accommodation in Perth Paradise Resort for another night instead of transferring to Sugar Beach. For the first stop is the White Beach, fine sand, blue water and only few people are seen in this area so its a very relaxing beach. Several private resorts around and also lots of the resort here offers a aquatic diving. I didn’t got the chance to dive. That was a hot beach walking with kuya Dado; who kept on sharing some infos regarding Sipalay. Then we went to Matlag Cave, a underground cave beside a road. Entrance to this cave is already called adventure. Like a manhole is repairing the leaked pipe of Maynilad. You need to prepare for a flash lights or headlamps and also a hardhat for protection of your head. You can have the hardhat from the store nearby which you can gave a donation. Nice stalagmite and stalactites inside this cave though you see some hand marks, so please do not touch with bare hands this stone formations, bring gloves so you could not infect the stones (I have left my gloves at the resort). The whole duration of this wet cave (a knee high water that time) takes only 15mins. Its a hard one cause you have to duckwalk and sometimes do the moves to be able to pass some chamber. After caving we went to Campomanes Resort which not originally on our deal. He bring me there because kuya Dado sense that I love adventures and of course climbing. So we went up to a cove point. Be careful with the pointed and loose rocks, a steep trail indeed. Up above this cove point you will see the almost 360 degrees of Sipalay City. The beaches, islets, the municipal hall and mining pit. Kuya Dado added that the mining stopped the operation long time ago because the community petition the mining company because of the pollution they get and started to plant trees to replenish the toxic that the mining tail. After a couple of minutes we descend and take some rest and proceed to the Tinagong Dagat Resort. Like a village with cottages from islets to another. Connected by the wood bridges and that time there is an ongoing construction so some spot are restricted. Almost afternoon, so we have to go to be in the next destination the Marra Cave, few kilometers away from Tinagong Dagat. We left the tricycle at the closest end of the pavement and start walking a 500 meter trail. The cave is so BIG. I haven’t seen that big facade of the cave. The high ceiling of this cave is extend up to few meters. Bats were present. And end point of this cave is a small pond. I did not risk to step on it, for not sure of what is underwater (snakes yikes!). The walks on this cave is smooth and smell of poops are all over. We only bring flash lights this time. I starting to be quiet that time because I felt so tired and dehydrated because of the cliff we climbed. So bring water for rehydration. Next stop is the Sugar Beach. From the main road we entered to a small public market of Sipalay and passing through a small community and mangroves around the place, ended in a beach but I have to ride for a paddle boat to cross the Sipalay River. 2-3 minutes to cross the river paying 5-10 pesos for the boatman (one way). A ride from the boat and just follow the walkways till you reach the Sugar Beach. Stray dog alert! Hahah. One of a kind beach sand. Powdery Brown Sand beach. When the waves splashes the sand it makes more stunning brown sugar. The whole beach is not crowded, foreigners are mostly sighted here. The sunset is magnificent and I love it just like Boracay. But I have to be back to our tricycle before the sunset, few more place I have to go. While on our way to Public Beach, my stomach cried for food. Haha. We were too busy to forgot the eat. On our way back to City proper Kuya Dado asked me a permission if we could let some people to come along the ride because they been there for a long time and I simply reply “Yes!”. Kuya Dado is a truly nice guy! Seeing the sunset around the green field of Sipalay, passing the New Municipal Hall with sunset behind is amazing, and finally we are in the city proper. Drop by the Chicken Ati-Atihan for advance order and then proceed to Public White Beach. That beach is so high quality of beach. The white powdery sand, the lovely sunset and people are freely moving around. Seeing also some people doing a skim boarding. I waited there till the sun bid her finale for the day. Back to Chicken Ati-atihan and we dine together. Kuya dado ask me before we went to the Pert Paradise Resort if I want to have a good time at the Public Beach because there were bar and bands around every night in preparation for the town fiesta, but I refused because I am so dead tired kid.

Around 7pm when I arrived at the resort. And take a relaxing night swimming with a bottle of beer under the moon and stars, with surrounded of islets. That was an awesome feeling to end the day.

Day 3: Sipalay till we meet again.
As early as 6am, I am prepared to check out because I have to travel back to Silay Airport for another 6 hours. And the aircon bus is estimated to pass the Bus stop of Sipalay between 6:30-7am. Exactly 6:30 the bus arrived. Till we meet again Kuya Dado. He actually send me a text message afterwards. That is why, I highly recommending you Kuya Dado for his very passionate acts.

And then wait for the team that went up the Mt. Kanlaon, take again a meal at Aida (favorite ko talaga yan!!!) then rented a taxi to Airport. And smooth fly by TigerAirways. Manila.
