Your pants are on fire!
Okay, so I began this rant because I grow impatient. I’m guessing its why I do ANY of these rants. But continuing on my ” little jaded rants”, I got something to say to all those folks that like to brag or cry in open chat, usually group chat, about their alleged (READ: FAKE) real lives.
You can stop now. Nobody cares. Especially when it doesn’t even sound like the truth.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mean to sound callous. When I say “nobody cares” I mean to say that we all come to SL to escape RL, to play a game, to chill out. I think it’s pretty safe to say that you will never meet any of those people you are lying to in real life (probably why you think it’s okay to talk shit), and more than half the people in that chat don’t care if you are cool or not, if you got laid last night, if you are high or drunk, or even if someone is at that very moment under your desk doing Linden-gods-knows-what.
I’m not talking about people going through real life things–and even if you are, the OOC chat of a PEW PEW sim is not the place to share those things (there are support groups and things like AA Meetings in world–look it up!). But trust me on this, when you lie we all know you are lying. As it turns out, SL has thousands of residents, and not all of them are sequestered in their mother’s basements unaware of the outside world. Even if they were, chances are that they have read more on the internet and know more about current events or how certain things work than you do.
I am sure that even if you are not one of those people, you know exactly what I’m talking about. They take up more real estate space in the OOC chat than anyone else, always talking and saying things we all just roll our eyes at. I’m talking about the guy that brags about their alleged military experience (shame on you for impersonating a hero that way), how many people they killed in Iraq, and how high is their security clearance. Dumbass… if you had that, you wouldn’t speak of it. Like AT ALL. Like it would be forbidden, and you would know it, and you wouldn’t say a thing. In fact, you would probably make up a story about how you work at Walmart or a convenience store to downplay the fact that you could very well be a person of interest if you were ever asked. This same person, on another day, brags about how much weed they have and how much they smoke. Dumbass… I thought you were military? You can’t be a stoner of that caliber and still have a high security clearance. Talking about the girl that brags about her perfect C cups, or how she’s in heels all day and possibly naked while playing SL because she can’t find jeans to fit her bubble butt anyway, only thongs, and barely. The one that brags about getting out of speeding tickets by flashing her boobs, or offering to suck off a cop. So by now we’ve all figured out you are 16 and know nothing of the world, and your bragging about your speeding tickets, your guns, your weed, your drinking, and all the sex you are having, etc, etc, etc– just makes it worse.
Face it. You are a nerd, like the rest of us. You need to log off and go for a jog. And if you are 16, turn off the computer and go outside for a bit.
Then we have the flip side. The ones that spend their whole time online CRYING about their shitty RL. Their husband cheats, they lost their job, their dog died, their sister died, they broke their leg, they have an incurable disease. We got the ones that when the guy (or girl) they’ve been RP’ing with doesn’t bend to their will they threaten suicide.
Years ago, before SL and Facebook, and so much social interaction online, I knew of a guy in a different game who was so into a girl he planned to meet in real life and marry her. Turns out the girl was diagnosed with something terminal. She was dying. In a matter of weeks she was in hospital. They set up a computer in her room at the hospital and the hospital felt so bad for her they let her have internet there–this was waaay before WiFi! So imagine, they ran wires for her and everything! They had this huge wedding in game because she was dying and she’d never have one RL. Then he didn’t hear from her for a few days, and finally someone logged on to her account claiming to be the girl’s best friend and wanted to let him know his fiancee hd died the day before. Of course she had told her family about him, they were all dying to meet him. He was devastated. He wanted to get tickets to her city and go to her funeral. The person logging into her account told him that it wouldn’t be appropriate, they had already buried her, and a few other excuses. All of this unfolded in the space of a couple of weeks.
It was all a lie. The chick was married in real life. Who the hell does that shit? WHY?
We all know why, even if we don’t say it. These people are looking for validation in an online game. It’s sad to think, and I’m not being condescending, that for some of us this is it. This is the part where I feel bad for people when I rant and I need to end the rant or not publish it. There are people out there who have a valid reason for not having anything else. Where this is their escape. But ya know what? The guy in the wheel chair that comes on SL so he can live vicariously through his avatar and ride a horse or dance all night in a night club isn’t going around telling people he’s in a wheel chair.
So yeah. Why not just have fun, live the fantasy through your character/avatar, and quit the BS?
